To reduce background noise in ASMR recordings, start by quieting the room, position the microphone close to the sound you want, and set input gain while monitoring the actual whisper or trigger. Use software cleanup only for noise that remains: profile-based reduction can help with steady hiss or hum, while gates mainly quiet pauses. Heavy processing can erase delicate ASMR detail or create metallic, watery artifacts.
Start by reducing noise before it reaches the microphone
Software can only work with the recording it receives, so address the room and recording setup first. Audacity’s general recording guidance recommends choosing a quiet room and notes that curtains, carpet, and other soft furnishings can reduce echo. These materials soften reflections inside a room; they do not block all outside sound.
- Turn off nearby fans, air conditioning, or other humming devices when practical, and close windows if outdoor noise is a problem.
- Use soft furnishings to reduce room reflections when the recording sounds echoey. Echo is different from steady electrical hiss or a fan hum, so furnishings are not a substitute for noise reduction aimed at those sounds.
- Use monitoring headphones to avoid computer playback feeding back into the microphone. Headphones do not reduce ambient sound captured from the room.
See Audacity’s recording guidance.
Place the microphone for the sound you want to capture
A microphone closer to a whisper, brush, or tapping source generally captures more of that sound relative to the room. The right distance depends on the microphone and trigger: a distance that suits speech may not suit a delicate close-up sound, and moving too close can introduce proximity effects or handling noise. Choose a repeatable placement and monitor the result.
Audacity gives a hand-span as a general voice-recording example, while RØDE describes closer placement in speech and streaming setups. Neither is a universal ASMR distance. A microphone boom arm can help maintain consistent placement, but it does not remove room noise by itself. RØDE’s discussion of placement is at RØDE’s home streaming studio guide.

Set the input level using the real ASMR performance
Monitor while producing the actual whisper or trigger, rather than setting gain only with ordinary speaking. Audacity’s general voice instructions suggest normal-speech peaks between −18 dB and −6 dB, but that is voice-oriented guidance, not a universal target for every ASMR source. Leave headroom so louder moments do not clip, and avoid recording so quietly that you must raise the entire recording substantially afterward: doing so raises the room noise along with the wanted sound.

Use noise reduction for steady noise, not every unwanted sound
Audacity’s profile-based Noise Reduction is designed for relatively constant sounds such as hiss, hum, or a steady fan. It needs a short sample containing noise alone; traffic, changing conversation, and other intermittent sounds do not provide the same stable profile. If you can, record a few seconds of room tone—background sound without any wanted whisper, breath, or trigger—before or after the performance.
- Select a few seconds of the isolated noise, then choose Get noise profile.
- Select the audio you want to clean and apply Noise Reduction.
- Audition the result, including a noise-only portion if available. If quiet wanted details disappear or the audio develops metallic or watery artifacts, reduce the processing and listen again.
Audacity’s documented defaults are 6 dB for reduction, sensitivity 6, and frequency smoothing of 6 bands. These are software defaults, not established best settings for ASMR; begin cautiously and judge the sound rather than treating the defaults as a target. See Audacity’s Noise Reduction documentation.

Choose the fix according to the noise
| Problem | Most relevant approach | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Steady hiss, hum, or fan noise | Remove or switch off the source if possible; profile-based reduction can address what remains. | A noisy sample containing wanted ASMR detail can lead the processor to remove that detail. |
| Changing traffic, chatter, or background music | Reduce the source at recording time where possible; a changing sound may not suit a fixed noise profile. | Processing may not separate changing background sound cleanly from a quiet trigger. |
| Room echo | Try a room with fewer hard reflections or add soft furnishings. | Furnishings can reduce reflections but do not block all sound entering from outside. |
| Noise mainly audible in pauses | A noise gate can lower sound below its threshold between triggers. | A gate does not remove noise underneath a quiet whisper and aggressive settings can make the noise pump up and down. |
| Low-frequency rumble | A high-pass filter may reduce low-frequency energy. | It can also alter low tones that are part of the intended sound. |
Audacity explains its noise-reduction workflow at Noise Reduction. RØDE describes gates and related processing in its home streaming studio guide.

Listen through headphones at a realistic listening level, paying particular attention to the softest whisper, breath, or trigger and to the gaps around it. Keep enough natural room ambience if removing it would make the wanted sound brittle or processed. Repeatedly applying reduction to chase absolute silence can do more harm than leaving a faint, unobtrusive noise floor. The goal is clear, natural ASMR—not silence at any cost.
