To reduce Azure bandwidth costs for a continuous YouTube stream, reduce unnecessary outbound data—not the VM’s network-throughput limit. First identify the bandwidth meter driving your bill, then measure the stream’s sustained bitrate and runtime, and lower the YouTube ingest bitrate only as far as picture quality and connection headroom allow. Resizing a VM alone does not reduce the number of encoded bytes it sends.
What Azure charges for—and what it does not
Azure’s VM guidance describes bandwidth charges in terms of data transferred: outbound traffic from Azure to an external endpoint may incur data-transfer fees. A VM’s size sets a network-throughput limit, a performance ceiling on how much traffic it can send; that limit is not the same thing as the billable volume of data sent. Microsoft’s VM size guidance and its bandwidth pricing information are useful starting points, but your rate depends on region and billing context.
For a stream, the most direct way to reduce transferred data is generally to lower the sustained encoded bitrate, provided the resulting picture remains acceptable and the stream stays stable. A smaller VM may have a lower throughput ceiling, but does not by itself make a given stream send fewer bytes. Resize for VM cost or compute needs only after confirming the replacement SKU can sustain the stream’s outbound traffic.
Find the bandwidth cost on your bill
- Open Azure Cost Analysis. Select the relevant billing period and break down costs by service and resource. Inspect the bandwidth-related meter and confirm whether the VM’s stream is a significant contributor. Azure portal labels and navigation can change; an older Microsoft Q&A answer provides an interface pointer, not a guarantee of current labels.
- Check the resource and meter attribution. Do not assume every bandwidth line item belongs to this stream. Compare usage records and the resources in scope before changing encoder settings.
- Record the billing context. Note the Azure region, subscription or offer, billing period, and exact meter. Without these and the measured volume, a reliable dollar estimate or savings percentage is not possible.
Use the Azure pricing calculator for a forecast, then reconcile it with actual Cost Analysis usage. The calculator is an estimate; the subscription’s own meter is the relevant check on what was billed.

Estimate how much data your stream sends
For a rough decimal-unit estimate, multiply the sustained bitrate in megabits per second by runtime in seconds and divide by 8,000 to get gigabytes. At a steady rate, 1 Mbps is about 0.45 GB per hour. This is a planning conversion, not an Azure tariff.
| Sustained bitrate | Approximate transfer per hour | Approximate transfer over 30 days of continuous streaming |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | 0.45 GB | 324 GB |
| 6 Mbps | 2.7 GB | 1,944 GB |
| 8 Mbps | 3.6 GB | 2,592 GB |
| 10 Mbps | 4.5 GB | 3,240 GB |
| 14 Mbps | 6.3 GB | 4,536 GB |
The 30-day figures assume an uninterrupted, constant bitrate for 720 hours and use the rough conversion above. Actual transfer can differ: account for audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, variable bitrate, runtime, and any other transmitting feed. If primary and backup encoders both send data at once, include both rates. Treat the calculation as an estimate and compare it with Azure usage records.

Choose a lower YouTube ingest bitrate carefully
YouTube’s live encoder recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The figures below are examples from YouTube’s current guidance accessed October 4, 2026; they are recommendations, not minimum requirements for every stream. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings table for the full, current set of combinations.
| Codec | Resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
Do not select a bitrate solely because it is the largest value in a recommendation table. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and codec that fit the content: fast motion and fine detail may need more data than a mostly static scene. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into playback formats, so sending a higher source bitrate does not mean viewers receive that exact stream quality. Test the lower setting with representative motion and audio, then check YouTube’s stream health before making it permanent.

Lower data use without losing stream stability
- Keep upload headroom. YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom. A connection that can only just match the encoder’s bitrate is vulnerable to congestion and instability. YouTube’s streaming tips also advise accounting for both primary and backup stream bitrates when planning capacity.
- Account for concurrent transmission. If a backup feed is actively sending, include its bitrate alongside the primary feed when checking available outbound capacity and estimating transfer.
- Test before committing. Monitor stream health while using the target bitrate under representative conditions. If the stream drops frames or becomes unstable, restore bitrate or address the capacity or connection issue rather than sacrificing reliability for a theoretical saving.
- Separate VM savings from bandwidth savings. Lowering VM size may reduce VM charges, but it does not directly reduce transfer volume. Confirm CPU and memory needs as well as the new SKU’s outbound-throughput limit before resizing.
Check regional pricing and special transfer policies
Azure transfer rates vary by region and billing context, so a bitrate reduction does not translate into a universal savings figure. Forecast with the Azure pricing calculator and verify the result against the bandwidth meter on your own subscription.
Microsoft’s Azure at-cost transfer policy applies only to qualifying customers in the EEA, EFTA, or UK and to specified qualifying transfers to another provider. It is not a general discount for ordinary delivery to YouTube: the policy excludes CDN delivery. Do not assume it covers a YouTube stream; confirm eligibility and any unusual Azure-approved arrangement directly with Azure.

Troubleshoot a high bill or an unstable stream
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Bandwidth charges remain high after resizing the VM | Resizing changes a throughput ceiling, not the bytes the encoder sends. | Check the bandwidth meter and reduce sustained bitrate or unnecessary simultaneous transmissions if quality and headroom allow. |
| Estimated transfer is much lower than billed usage | The estimate may omit runtime, audio, overhead, reconnects, variable bitrate, or another transmitting feed; the meter may also cover other traffic. | Compare Azure usage records with actual stream runtime and outbound activity, and verify resource and meter attribution in Cost Analysis. |
| The lower-bitrate stream drops frames or disconnects | The bitrate change may not be the only issue; available outbound capacity, network conditions, or concurrent primary and backup feeds can affect stability. | Check YouTube stream health, preserve the recommended upload headroom, and confirm the VM SKU’s throughput limit. Test a suitable bitrate again under representative conditions. |
| The picture looks worse after reducing bitrate | The selected bitrate may be too low for the resolution, frame rate, codec, or motion in the content. | Test a higher bitrate or a lower resolution/frame rate with the same content, then compare visual acceptability and stream stability. |
| The forecast does not match the bill | Regional rates, billing details, measured traffic, and the selected meter may differ from forecast assumptions. | Use the subscription’s Cost Analysis meter and usage records to validate the forecast; do not treat the calculator as a guaranteed charge. |
