To make modern emulators look more like a CRT, enable a shader preset in RetroArch, start with integer scaling, and add effects such as scanlines, phosphor masks, bloom and curvature only as your hardware and display allow. For a low-power device such as a Raspberry Pi, begin with a lightweight preset; use CRT-Royale when you have the graphics headroom and a high-resolution screen that can show its finer details.

What makes a CRT shader look convincing?

A CRT effect is a combination of image-processing techniques, not simply dark horizontal lines. Libretro describes shader presets as attempts to reproduce aspects of cathode-ray-tube displays, with results shaped by the preset, its settings, the source resolution, scaling and your display.

  • Scanlines add or modulate horizontal structure associated with a raster display.
  • Phosphor masks simulate the repeating colored structure of aperture-grille, slot-mask or shadow-mask displays.
  • Bloom and halation approximate light spreading around bright image areas.
  • Curvature and bezel geometry warp and frame the image to suggest a rounded tube face.
  • Interlacing and NTSC processing can reproduce aspects of broadcast-era video and signal artifacts.

These effects are stylized approximations, not a reproduction of every electrical, optical or motion characteristic of a physical television. CRT-Royale, for example, models phosphor bloom by adding blur to spread brightness after a mask is applied; real CRTs also vary substantially. See Libretro’s CRT shader documentation and its CRT-Royale documentation.

Which CRT shader preset should you choose?

Choose according to your device’s graphics performance and the resolution of the screen you use. Lightweight presets trade some complexity for a better chance of running smoothly on weaker hardware; a demanding multi-pass preset offers more room for visual adjustment.

Preset or approach Visual character and tuning Performance and resolution guidance
zfast-crt A lightweight starting point for a basic CRT-style effect. Intended for weaker hardware; exact performance depends on the device and settings. Libretro does not state a specific resolution target in the cited guidance.
crt-blurpi A lightweight CRT treatment. Libretro describes it as designed to run full speed on Raspberry Pi hardware and gives guidance for screens at 640×480 or less. That is configuration guidance, not a guarantee for every setup.
crt-pi A practical lightweight option, particularly for a Raspberry Pi setup. Libretro’s guidance targets 4:3 screens at 1080p. Actual performance varies with the device and configuration.
CRT-Royale Highly customizable, with more complex mask, bloom and other CRT-style details. More computationally demanding. Its documentation discusses 1440p and 4K-class displays for rendering phosphor-mask detail; a high-resolution display is useful, but does not ensure a particular result or frame rate.

The comparisons above reflect Libretro’s documented guidance, not a benchmark across devices. Explore the preset descriptions and CRT-Royale’s notes on mask detail before choosing. At lower output resolutions, an intricate mask may not be clearly resolved; at higher resolutions it has more pixels available to render.

Set up a CRT shader in RetroArch

RetroArch supports GLSL and Slang shader formats, can stack shader passes, and lets you adjust parameters and save tuned presets. The documented workflow is:

  1. Update the shader packs using Main Menu → Online Updater.
  2. Launch the game or other content you want to play.
  3. Open Quick Menu → Shaders.
  4. Select Load Shader Preset and choose a preset. Libretro’s shader introduction gives shaders_glsl/crt/crt-geom.glslp as an example.
  5. Adjust the available parameters until the image suits your screen and preference.
  6. Save your tuned settings as a new preset so your changes can be reused.

Menu labels and available presets can depend on your RetroArch setup and installed shader pack. For format and preset details, see Libretro’s shader introduction.

Get cleaner scanlines with scaling and gradual tuning

Integer scaling generally produces cleaner, more regular repeating scanline effects because source pixels map to whole numbers of output pixels. Start there before increasing shader complexity. Then change one group of effects at a time: tune scanlines and sharpness first, and add curvature, mask and bloom gradually. This makes it easier to spot when a setting dims the image too much or blurs details you want to keep.

Do not assume that a stronger effect is automatically more faithful. A dense mask or heavy bloom can change brightness and clarity, while curvature alters the framing. The appropriate balance depends on the game’s source resolution, your scaling and your display.

Can a Raspberry Pi run CRT shaders?

Yes. Libretro documents lightweight CRT shaders for Raspberry Pi hardware, including crt-blurpi, described as designed to run full speed on Raspberry Pi hardware, and crt-pi. Start with one of these or zfast-crt, then check that the game remains smooth before trying more elaborate effects.

Older RPi1 and Zero models may need overclocking for some shader setups, but it is a possibility rather than a universal requirement or performance guarantee. A demanding preset such as CRT-Royale will generally place more load on the graphics hardware, so it is a less sensible first choice for a low-power build. Consult Libretro’s CRT shader guidance for its device and screen recommendations.
