If an external hard drive won’t open, stop using it for normal file operations and don’t format, initialize, or partition it. First check whether the computer detects the drive; then choose a recovery path based on whether the problem is a connection, an inaccessible file system, deleted or lost files, or possible physical failure. Save any recovered files to a different physical drive, never back onto the source.

Protect the files before troubleshooting

Every write to a drive with lost or inaccessible data can complicate recovery. Don’t copy files onto it, run a format, initialize it, or create a new partition. Microsoft specifically warns that creating a partition after data loss reduces the chance of successful recovery, and says Windows File Recovery’s source and destination must not be the same physical partition. Use a separate physical drive for recovered files, such as another external drive. Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guidance

If the drive contains the only copy of irreplaceable files and it clicks, grinds, repeatedly disconnects, or appears inconsistently, disconnect it and seek qualified data-recovery advice before running repair scans. Software cannot be assumed to recover a physically failing drive.

Check whether the computer detects the drive

Rule out a cable, port, or power problem

  1. Reconnect the drive using its supplied cable, if available. Try a different compatible cable and USB port, then test it on another computer.
  2. For a desktop external drive, check that its original power adapter is connected to a working outlet. A port may not supply enough power; a powered hub or dock may help when inadequate power is a plausible cause, but it will not repair a damaged drive.
  3. On Windows, open Disk Management and check whether the physical drive and its volume appear. On Mac, open Disk Utility, choose View, then Show All Devices, and check the device and volumes.

Western Digital lists connection problems alongside damaged partitions or file systems, media errors, and drive failure as possible reasons an external drive is not detected. WD’s external-drive detection troubleshooting

Interpret what appears

  • Drive does not appear at all: After checking connections and another computer, avoid repeated repair attempts. A device missing from Mac Disk Utility may need service, according to Apple. Media errors or physical failure are also possible.
  • Drive appears, but the volume will not open: The computer can see the device, but the file system may be damaged or incompatible. Don’t format it just to make it mount.
  • Volume opens but files are missing or were deleted: A file-recovery tool may help if the data has not been overwritten. Recover to a different physical drive.

Check for a file-system compatibility issue

A drive that works on one operating system but not another may have a format or driver mismatch rather than lost files. WD says NTFS mounts read/write on Windows and read-only on macOS without a third-party driver, while exFAT mounts read/write on both. If you can safely access the drive from the computer that supports its format, copy important files to a separate drive before making changes. WD’s Windows detection and format guidance

Recover files on Windows with Windows File Recovery

Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery is a built-in command-line utility for supported file-recovery situations. The mode depends on the file system and what happened to the data; it is not a universal fix for an undetected or physically failing disk. Microsoft recommends Regular mode for recently deleted files on NTFS, and Extensive mode for older NTFS deletions, formatted or corrupted NTFS volumes, and FAT or exFAT. Non-NTFS recovery is supported in Extensive mode. Windows File Recovery overview and Microsoft’s mode-selection guidance

  1. Identify the source drive letter and, if known, the file system. Do not assume the drive letter or format; check Disk Management.
  2. Connect a separate physical destination drive and note its drive letter. The destination cannot be the same physical partition as the source.
  3. Choose Regular or Extensive mode according to Microsoft’s guidance for the file system and loss type, and follow the utility’s current instructions for the recovery command. If the drive is not detected or is showing signs of physical failure, stop rather than forcing a scan.
  4. Check the destination for recovered files and open representative files to confirm they are usable.

Recovery may take time, and if deleted data has been overwritten, recovery may not be possible. Microsoft advises against creating a partition after loss because that can reduce recovery chances.

Use First Aid on a Mac only for a detected device

Disk Utility First Aid checks and repairs certain formatting and directory-structure errors; it is not a guarantee of file recovery. Apple’s procedure is to show all devices and run First Aid through the volumes, then containers, then the physical device. Apple: How to repair a Mac storage device with Disk Utility

  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  1. Open Disk Utility, choose View, then Show All Devices.
  2. Select a volume on the external drive and click First Aid. Repeat for each volume.
  3. Select the container above the volumes, if present, and run First Aid.
  4. Select the physical device and run First Aid.

If First Aid cannot repair the device and the files still matter, do not erase it as a next step: erasing formats the drive. If the device is absent from Disk Utility after connection checks, Apple says it may need service.

When to stop DIY recovery

  • The drive makes unusual mechanical sounds, disconnects repeatedly, or appears only intermittently.
  • The computer reports media errors, or the device remains undetected after cable, port, power, and second-computer checks.
  • The files are irreplaceable and there is no backup. Avoid write-repair operations until you have specialist advice.

CHKDSK is a repair utility, not a file-recovery guarantee. Microsoft defines /f as fixing disk errors and /r as locating bad sectors and attempting recovery of readable information. Microsoft also warns that repairs to FAT volumes change the allocation table and can sometimes cause data loss. If the data is valuable or physical failure is suspected, preserve the source and seek advice before running these options. Microsoft’s CHKDSK documentation

Verify recovered data and back it up

After recovery, open a selection of recovered documents, photos, and other important files from the destination drive. A filename alone does not prove that a file is intact. Once you have confirmed what you can, make a second backup on another storage device or backup service. No recovery method guarantees a successful result for every drive or file-loss situation.
