Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo recover a deleted download, first stop saving or installing anything on the drive it was stored on. Check the Recycle Bin on Windows or Trash on Mac, then check any backup or cloud-service Recently Deleted area. If you’re asking, “How do I recover deleted files from my Downloads folder?”, the best method depends on where the file was stored and whether it was backed up.
Confirm the download is actually gone
Search your Downloads folder by filename, file type, or a word you remember from its name. Check nearby folders too: the file may have been moved rather than deleted.
If you downloaded it through a browser, open the browser’s downloads list to find the original filename or the website it came from. That list can help you download the file again, but it is not a copy of the deleted file.
Recover a deleted download in Windows
Restore it from the Recycle Bin
- Open Recycle Bin.
- Find the file, right-click it, and select Restore. Windows returns it to its original location if it is still available there.
Look for a File History or other backup copy
If File History or another backup was configured before the deletion, inspect the previous version of the folder that contained the file. File History backs up libraries by default, and custom folders can be included in a library; Downloads is not automatically protected in every setup. See Microsoft’s File History backup and restore instructions.

When restoring a previous version, choose a different location if you need to avoid replacing newer files. Windows backup options and their coverage are described in Microsoft’s backup, restore, and recovery guide.
Try Windows File Recovery only if needed
If the file is not in the Recycle Bin and no backup contains it, minimize use of the affected drive. Microsoft explains that deleting a file marks its storage space as available, and later activity may overwrite it. Avoid installing recovery software or saving files to that drive; recovery may fail after the space is overwritten, particularly on an SSD. Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11 and describe the command-line app for local storage. It does not recover files from cloud storage or network shares.

The basic command format is:
winfr source-drive: destination-drive: [/mode] [/switches]
The source and destination drives must be different. If the computer has only one internal drive, use a separate external USB drive as the destination; the drive provides somewhere to save recovered files, but does not recover them by itself.

Recovery is not guaranteed. Microsoft publishes no success-rate figure, and a file may be unrecoverable if its storage space has already been overwritten.

Check Time Machine if you use it
If Time Machine was set up before the file went missing, inspect the backup for the Downloads folder and restore the file from there. Apple also recommends checking Time Machine when files are missing from iCloud Drive; see Apple’s iCloud Drive troubleshooting guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Recover a deleted file from iCloud Drive
For an iCloud Drive file, check Recently Deleted on a device or on iCloud.com. Apple says eligible files deleted from iCloud Drive or other apps can be recovered for up to 30 days, unless they have been permanently removed.
- On iCloud.com, open iCloud Drive, then Recently Deleted.
- Select the file and choose Recover.
Apple notes that deleting an iCloud Drive item syncs across connected devices, so checking another connected device may not reveal an undeleted copy. During recovery on iCloud.com, avoid changing iCloud Drive; Apple says changes can interrupt the process. Follow Apple’s instructions for recovering deleted files on iCloud.com.
