You can recover data after an Android factory reset if it still exists in a Google or manufacturer backup, a cloud service, an app-specific backup, a computer copy, or removable storage. Files that existed only in the phone’s internal storage are usually not recoverable after a completed reset.

Start by checking the account and backup that could contain the missing data. If the phone is still in its setup process, use the restore option there. If setup is complete, check cloud services and local backups before deciding whether a second reset is worthwhile.

First, identify what was reset and where the data was stored

A factory data reset erases the phone’s data and uninstalls apps and their data, according to Google’s Android reset guidance. That does not erase a separate copy that was already synced to an account, saved to a computer, or stored on removable media. By contrast, resetting network settings or app preferences is not the same as erasing all user data.

Use the missing data type to choose where to look first:

Passwords and authenticator codes Google Password Manager, Samsung Pass, a password manager, or the authenticator’s sync/export feature
Secure Folder, wallet, or transit data The relevant Samsung, wallet, transit, or app-specific service; do not assume standard Android backup includes it

Google’s standard Android backup can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS. RCS messages and photos may be handled through specific Google apps. Not every app supports backing up or restoring all its data, so a restored app may open without its previous local database or login state. See Google’s Android backup and restore details.

Restore a Google backup during Android setup

The most complete Google restore flow is typically offered during initial setup on a new or reset phone. You need the Google Account that held the backup. If you are unsure which account you used, check each account you previously had on the phone rather than assuming the currently visible one is correct.

  1. Turn on the reset phone and connect it to Wi-Fi or mobile data.
  2. Follow Android setup until prompted to copy or restore data.
  3. Sign in with the Google Account used on the old phone.
  4. Choose the backup for the old device, if one is listed, and select the available categories or apps.
  5. Keep the phone connected to power and the internet while the restore continues. Google says full backup or restoration can take up to 24 hours.
  6. Open key apps and sign in where required; then check Google Photos, Contacts, Drive, Messages, and Password Manager individually.

For the most complete transfer, the receiving phone should run the same or a newer Android version than the phone that created the backup. Google warns that a backup from a higher Android version cannot be restored to a lower-version phone. Backup availability and the categories shown depend on the account, device, Android version, and what was enabled before the reset.

Check what the Google backup contains

On a phone that is still usable, a typical current path is Settings → Google → All services → Backup and restore → Backup. Menu labels can differ by manufacturer and Android version. Review the account and backup details rather than treating the existence of a backup as proof that every file was included. Google’s current help page says some backup steps apply only to Android 9 and later, and that a Google Account includes up to 15 GB of storage at no charge, shared across applicable Google services.

If you already finished setup and skipped restore

Signing in to Google after setup does not necessarily restore every category or recreate the full setup-time restore prompt. Samsung also documents Google Drive restoration through the Setup Wizard on a new or reset phone, rather than as a general restore action in ordinary settings: Samsung’s Smart Switch and restore guidance.

If the missing backup appears to be available but the setup restore was skipped, a second factory reset may be needed to get the setup flow again. Before doing that, copy or back up anything new you have created since the first reset. Resetting again erases that new data. Then confirm the Google Account and Android-version compatibility, reset only if you accept that risk, and select the old backup during setup.

Troubleshoot a missing Google backup

  1. Try every likely Google Account. A backup associated with one account may not appear when you sign in with another. Check account storage or backup details from another signed-in device or browser.
  2. Check Android-version compatibility. Update the receiving phone where possible; a lower Android version may not accept a backup made on a higher version.
  3. Allow restoration time. Some content can appear before apps, settings, and other data finish restoring.
  4. Check services directly. Open Google Photos, Google Contacts, Google Drive, Google Password Manager, and Google Messages instead of relying only on the phone’s Gallery or Contacts app.
  5. Inspect the backup categories. A backup may exist but omit the specific data you need, or an app may not support full data restoration.
  6. Consider setup timing. If setup is complete and you need the setup-time restore flow, preserve new data before considering another reset.

Find photos and videos

Check Google Photos, including its less obvious locations

  1. Open Google Photos or visit photos.google.com and sign in to the Google Account used before the reset.
  2. Check the main photo library, then look in Collections → Trash, Archive, device folders, and Locked Folder as applicable.
  3. Download items you need as local copies once you have found them.

A factory reset removes local phone data but does not by itself remove a copy that was already backed up to Google Photos. Deleting an item in Google Photos is different: that can remove the synced copy, while Archive only hides an item from the main library. Google Photos says backed-up photos and videos remain in Trash for 60 days; unbacked items can remain for 30 days in the applicable Android 11-and-later flow. Items permanently deleted from Trash cannot be restored through Google Photos. See Google Photos’ deletion and restoration guidance.

Look beyond Google Photos

Check Samsung Gallery synchronization with OneDrive, other cloud services such as Dropbox or Drive, and any computer or external drive used for manual USB transfers. If the photos were on a microSD card, inspect the card separately and do not format it. An encrypted card may need the original phone or its encryption credentials to be readable; Samsung warns that an encrypted microSD card should be decrypted before a reset or it may not be readable afterward: Samsung’s reset and storage guidance.

Restore contacts, messages, call history, and files

Contacts

Sign in to the original Google Account and allow Contacts sync, then verify the contacts in Google Contacts on the web. Google says contacts saved to a Google Account sync automatically after sign-in. If contacts were stored only on the device or SIM, import them manually. Also look for an exported .vcf file in email, Drive, a computer, or removable storage, and check a Samsung account if you used one.

Messages and call history

Google backup may include call history and SMS/MMS; Google Messages may handle RCS messages through its own applicable backup settings. Samsung Smart Switch can restore selected categories such as contacts and messages from a backup. Message history may be divided among SMS, RCS, and third-party messaging apps, so check the service that actually held the conversation. An old backup may also predate the messages you want or may have been made after they were deleted.

Documents, downloads, and other files

Search Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, other cloud accounts, and old computers for the folders you copied from the phone. Check USB drives, external SSDs, NAS storage, and microSD cards. A factory reset does not recreate a file that was never copied elsewhere, and a cloud account may contain only selected folders rather than the entire phone.

Samsung Galaxy: restore with Smart Switch or Samsung services

Smart Switch is a Samsung transfer and backup tool, not a universal Android recovery program. It can restore a Galaxy from an existing PC/Mac or compatible external-storage backup, with available categories dependent on the backup and device. Follow Samsung’s current instructions at Smart Switch and data restoration.

Restore a Smart Switch backup from a computer

  1. Install Smart Switch on the Windows PC or Mac where the backup was created.
  2. Connect the reset Galaxy to the computer using a compatible USB cable and open Smart Switch.
  3. Select Restore, choose the backup, and select all data or the available categories you need.
  4. Start the restore and keep the connection intact until it completes.

Restore from an SD card or USB storage

  1. Insert the SD card or connect the USB storage using a suitable adapter.
  2. Open Smart Switch and choose its SD-card or external-storage option.
  3. Select Restore, choose the backup and categories, then complete the transfer before safely disconnecting storage.

Samsung account and Samsung Cloud features vary by model, region, and service. Check the Samsung account and backup options available on the specific phone instead of assuming every Galaxy stores the same categories in Samsung Cloud.

Restore WhatsApp and other app-specific data

Some apps maintain their own backup systems. For WhatsApp, install the app, use the same phone number and relevant account, and follow its in-app restore prompt if one is offered. Do not skip a first-launch restore prompt if that is where the app provides it. Android’s transfer guidance directs WhatsApp users to use the app’s restore process: Android’s phone-transfer guidance. WhatsApp’s interface and backup rules can change, so follow the current prompts in the app.

Apply the same account-specific check to authenticator apps, password managers, encrypted note apps, and other services that may have separate cloud sync or export features. Do not assume that an Android backup includes a complete app database, all media, or a usable login session. Samsung Secure Folder data also has separate behavior; do not assume ordinary Android backup contains it.

Check removable storage and old computers carefully

Removable storage is a separate recovery route, not evidence that reset internal storage can be recovered. Do not format a card that might contain the missing files, and if you use a recovery process on a card, save recovered files to a different drive rather than back onto that card. If the card was encrypted, the original device or credentials may be necessary. Search old computer backup folders and manually copied DCIM, Downloads, Documents, and messaging-media folders as well.

If there was no backup, set realistic expectations

For a completed factory reset, files that existed only on modern Android internal storage are generally not recoverable through ordinary consumer methods. Android storage encryption and the reset process make “scan the phone and get everything back” claims unreliable; Samsung warns that personal information may not be recoverable after a factory reset. That is not an absolute statement about every device or every reset: outcomes can vary with device age, Android version, encryption, storage type, whether the reset completed, and whether the data was actually on removable storage.

  • Avoid installing multiple recovery apps or paying for a tool that claims guaranteed recovery after a factory reset without clearly explaining supported devices, Android versions, encryption limits, and refund terms.
  • Do not root the phone, unlock its bootloader, flash firmware, or repeatedly use it in hopes of exposing erased internal files; these actions can further alter the device and are not a reliable recovery path.
  • If the data has substantial legal, financial, or personal value, stop using the phone and consult a reputable mobile-forensics laboratory. Ask for a written assessment, transparent diagnostic fees, lawful-ownership requirements, and clear no-guarantee terms. Even a specialist may be unable to recover data after a completed reset.

Prevent the same loss before resetting again

Before another reset, verify that the backup actually contains what matters rather than relying on a backup icon alone. Google’s reset guidance recommends knowing the Google Account and screen-lock credentials, charging the phone to at least 70%, and connecting to Wi-Fi or mobile data. If you recently changed your Google Account password, Google advises waiting 24 hours before resetting. See Google’s preparation steps for a factory reset.

  • Review Android backup details and confirm the account and included categories.
  • Open Google Photos and verify recent images are present in the cloud library.
  • Export especially important contacts to a .vcf file and copy critical files to two independent destinations.
  • Create a Smart Switch or computer backup if you use a Galaxy, and verify it is visible before wiping the phone.
  • Check app-specific backups for messaging apps, authenticators, password managers, and Secure Folder data.
  • Record account recovery methods and keep backup codes somewhere other than the phone being reset.
  • Decrypt or safely remove encrypted removable storage as appropriate. Android 15 and later may remind users to back up supported transit cards with stored funds; whether that applies depends on the wallet or transit-card provider.

If you are resetting because the phone is lost, remote erase is a security action, not a recovery method. It removes data from the device rather than retrieving it; see Android’s reset guidance.
