FFmpeg’s -reconnect options are not a general retry mechanism for an RTMP publishing output. FFmpeg documents that option family for HTTP, separately from RTMP/RTMPS. To recover after a brief publisher-side disconnect, run FFmpeg under a supervisor or wrapper that restarts it if the process exits, then verify the stream in YouTube Studio. A restart can restore publishing, but it cannot recover frames missed during the outage or guarantee uninterrupted playback for viewers.

Why -reconnect does not solve an RTMP publishing drop

FFmpeg’s protocol documentation places reconnect, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error and reconnect_on_http_error among HTTP protocol options. RTMP and RTMPS have a separate section, which documents an FLV output workflow. These HTTP options should not be treated as RTMP output retry flags. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.

If the publishing connection fails and FFmpeg exits, recovery usually means restarting the publishing process through a service manager, container restart policy or wrapper. That is operational supervision around FFmpeg, not an RTMP reconnect option documented by FFmpeg.

Configure the YouTube publishing endpoint

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the stream you intend to broadcast. Obtain its server URL and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to publish to your stream.
  2. Use the URL and key in your FFmpeg publishing setup. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint where YouTube provides it and your FFmpeg build supports it; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. The endpoint and key are supplied by YouTube, so do not substitute a guessed URL.
  3. For an RTMP/RTMPS publish workflow, use the appropriate FLV output format and endpoint. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation shows the general output form -f flv rtmp://...; the actual URL and command depend on your input, encoding choices, and YouTube-provided ingest details.
  4. For a scheduled event, connect the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room before selecting Go live. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current Studio workflow.

Do not put HTTP-specific -reconnect flags on the RTMP output expecting them to retry a dropped publish connection.

Set up process recovery when FFmpeg exits

Choose a supervisor or wrapper

Run the FFmpeg publishing process under a platform-appropriate service manager, container orchestrator restart policy, or small wrapper. Configure it to restart only after the publishing process exits or has been deliberately declared unhealthy. Add bounded backoff and logging so a persistent bad key, unavailable endpoint or network outage does not cause a tight restart loop. Syntax and health-check configuration differ by operating system and deployment platform; there is no single safe, universal command for every FFmpeg setup.

The recovery logic is conceptually:

while service_is_enabled:
    run ffmpeg publishing process
    record exit status and logs
    wait with bounded backoff

This is pseudocode, not a drop-in shell script. Use your host’s service manager or container platform for production, and confirm how it detects failure: a process that remains alive but is no longer publishing may need a suitable health check rather than an exit-only restart policy.

Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.

Account for the input type

  • Live camera, capture device or live feed: a restart may reopen the source and resume generating current content, provided the device and input remain available. Verify device handling and encoding after restart.
  • Finite video file: restarting FFmpeg may begin the file again rather than continue at the position reached before the disconnect. If resuming at a particular point matters, the wrapper or application must manage input position; a basic process restart does not promise that behavior.
  • Any input: frames and audio missed while the process or network is down cannot be restored by restarting the publisher. Test the precise source and restart behavior you plan to use.

Choose and test encoder settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, recommends RTMPS, and advises testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality the connection can sustain. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate and codec, so select the row that matches your actual stream instead of treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

  1. Set resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate for the stream you will actually send. If upload capacity is inconsistent, test a lower bitrate or resolution rather than relying on automatic retries to compensate for an undersized connection.
  2. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds where your encoder settings allow it, and do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum recommendation.
  3. Make a test broadcast using the same input, network and restart policy. Inspect the preview and stream health in Live Control Room, and confirm what viewers see after a real test interruption.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after streaming ends. That does not establish how every brief publishing interruption affects event continuity or the archive; test your own scheduled-stream workflow in Live Control Room.

Diagnose the failure before changing retry behavior

Use the sequence below to identify whether the cause is process failure, source/encode trouble, the outbound network or an endpoint configuration problem. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder software, the encoder feed, errors and CPU load, and testing the outbound internet connection.

  1. Did FFmpeg exit? Check the supervisor’s exit status and FFmpeg logs. If it exited, determine the reported failure and whether the supervisor restarted it; avoid masking a persistent configuration error with rapid retries.
  2. Is the source and encode healthy? Inspect the encoder feed, relevant error messages and CPU load. A source device that disappeared or an overloaded machine needs a source or resource fix, not just a restart loop.
  3. Is outbound connectivity stable enough? Test the connection from the streaming host and compare upload capacity with the bitrate you selected. If the stream is on Wi-Fi and instability recurs locally, a wired connection may help reduce local wireless problems; it cannot fix every ISP or route failure, and it does not configure FFmpeg recovery.
  4. Are the endpoint and key correct? Recheck the current YouTube server URL and stream key in Live Control Room. Keep the key private and update the encoder if YouTube’s stream details have changed.
  5. Did publishing return successfully? Check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators after the test. A running FFmpeg process alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.

Supervisor restarts versus preventing network drops

Approach Failure layer addressed What it can do Limit
Supervisor or wrapper restart FFmpeg process has exited or is declared unhealthy Start the publishing process again, with logging and backoff configured by the operator Does not restore lost frames; a finite file may restart from the beginning
Network improvement, such as using a stable wired connection Some local connection instability May reduce drops caused by local wireless conditions Does not restart FFmpeg and cannot prevent every ISP, route or remote endpoint failure

These measures address different failure layers and can be used together. Neither guarantees an uninterrupted viewer experience; validate the combined setup with a controlled test.
