If FFmpeg exits on an EC2 instance, restart it with a process supervisor such as systemd; an FFmpeg output-recovery option cannot restart an exited process. First identify whether FFmpeg stopped, its network output failed, the EC2 host rebooted, or YouTube stopped accepting the stream. Each failure needs a different recovery step, and a restarted encoder is not guaranteed to resume the same YouTube live event.
Diagnose which part of the stream failed
Before restarting anything, distinguish among four layers: the FFmpeg process, its connection to YouTube, the EC2 instance, and YouTube’s ingest or live-event state. An FFmpeg error alone does not show that EC2 suffered an infrastructure failure.
- FFmpeg process: Check its exit status and logs to establish whether the process ended and when.
- Service manager: Check whether the supervisor reports the service as failed, stopped, or restarting. If you do not yet run FFmpeg under a supervisor, an exited process will not restart itself.
- EC2 instance: Review instance status checks and system or boot logs. AWS automatic instance recovery applies to qualifying system status check failures associated with underlying infrastructure; it is not triggered merely because an instance status check fails.
- YouTube: Check the current stream and event status in YouTube Live Control Room, as well as the configured destination, ingest protocol, and stream key.
Use the evidence to determine whether the process exited, the publishing connection dropped while FFmpeg remained alive, the host rebooted, or YouTube’s ingest or event state changed. Keep relevant logs so you can identify the cause instead of treating repeated restarts as a fix.
Restart FFmpeg when the process exits
Run the encoder under an operating-system service manager such as systemd. Configure the service to restart after failure and enable it at boot if it must return after a reboot. The exact unit, restart policy, command, and environment depend on your installation; there is no single configuration that fits every FFmpeg workload.

- Preserve the working command and environment. Keep the input paths, FFmpeg arguments, and required environment settings in controlled service configuration. Confirm that the service runs with the permissions it needs to read the input and write logs.
- Keep credentials out of shell history and readable logs. Protect the YouTube stream key and any configuration containing it. Do not expose it in diagnostic output or share it when asking for help.
- Set a restart-on-failure policy. Choose a delay and retry behavior appropriate to the workload. A supervisor can relaunch an exited process, but it cannot identify or repair the underlying cause by itself.
- Enable and verify startup behavior. Enable the service at boot if unattended recovery after an EC2 reboot is required. Check the service manager’s status and logs after a manual restart and after a planned reboot test.
- Investigate recurring exits. Inspect FFmpeg and service logs for the actual failure before relying on automatic restarts. A crash loop can repeatedly fail without restoring a stable stream.
Use the service manager’s status and journal alongside FFmpeg’s own logs. The correct commands and unit syntax vary by operating system and service configuration, so verify them against the system you run rather than copying an untested generic unit.
Recover a failed output while FFmpeg is still running
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has an attempt_recovery option for attempts to recover an output after failure. FFmpeg documents it as especially useful for network output and says it is false by default. Its scope is output recovery while FFmpeg remains running: it cannot bring back a process that has exited.

FIFO queue settings also involve a trade-off. FFmpeg’s documentation describes dropping packets on overflow as a way to avoid blocking the encoder, at the cost of omitted stream content. Check the documentation matching your installed FFmpeg build, then test the selected options with your actual input and ingest endpoint. Do not assume that an output retry setting will reconnect successfully in every network or YouTube event state.
Respond to an EC2 reboot or infrastructure failure
AWS automatic instance recovery is intended for supported, configured instances when an underlying hardware or software issue causes a qualifying system status check failure. AWS says recovery appears to the instance as an unplanned reboot. Volatile memory is lost, and operating-system uptime resets.

- Check the instance’s status checks and system or boot logs to determine whether a qualifying infrastructure issue and recovery occurred.
- After the reboot or recovery, check whether the FFmpeg workload and its service are running. AWS advises checking the application after recovery and starting it if it is not running.
- If the service is stopped, start it through the service manager and inspect its logs and FFmpeg output.
- For unattended recovery after future reboots, configure the workload to start at boot and verify that behavior with a planned test.
- Check that the actual instance supports and has the relevant automatic recovery configuration. Do not treat automatic recovery as a response to an application process exit.
Verify YouTube will accept the restarted encoder
A successful FFmpeg restart does not prove that YouTube will accept the output or resume the same live event. Check the current event and stream status in YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the destination and stream key, and follow the ingestion instructions for the protocol you use.
YouTube’s documented HLS setup covers HLS ingestion and its required settings; it does not establish a general RTMP reconnection guarantee. AWS IVS documents behavior for its own service, but that behavior should not be applied to YouTube. If the current YouTube event is no longer accepting the encoder, follow the instructions shown in YouTube’s tools for that event rather than assuming a process restart will restore it.

Choose recovery at the layer that failed

Common recovery problems
- FFmpeg stays stopped after an exit: It is not running under an effective process supervisor, or the service is not configured to restart. Check the service manager’s status and configuration, then verify restart behavior.
- The service restarts repeatedly but the stream remains unstable: Relaunching does not repair the cause. Use FFmpeg and service logs to investigate the repeated exit or output failure before changing restart behavior.
- FFmpeg is alive but output has failed: A process-level restart policy may not apply because the process has not exited. Check the output and network state; if using the FIFO muxer, review the installed build’s recovery and queue settings.
- The instance has rebooted but FFmpeg is not running: Check whether the service is enabled at boot and whether the workload started successfully. Start it manually if needed, then inspect service and boot logs.
- AWS did not recover the instance after a status problem: Verify whether the failure was a qualifying system status check failure, and whether the instance is supported and recovery is configured. Application or instance status failures alone do not establish eligibility for automatic recovery.
- FFmpeg restarted but YouTube does not show the stream as live: Check the event’s current state, destination, stream key, and protocol instructions in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not infer same-event reconnection from the process restart.
