After a VPS reboot, restart the encoder with the existing YouTube stream URL and current stream key. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the feed to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room, then click Go live unless auto-start is enabled. A reboot alone does not mean you need a new key.

Recover the stream after the VPS restarts

  1. Confirm the VPS is reachable. Connect using your usual server-management method and check whether the encoder process is running. If it did not launch at boot, start it through the service, container, or deployment procedure used to install it. There is no universal command: the correct one depends on the operating system and setup.
  2. Check the encoder destination and key. The encoder needs YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Find them in the stream’s settings in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the encoder is configured with the intended destination. Treat the key like a password; do not expose it in logs, screenshots, or public instructions.
  3. Start the encoder. Use the normal startup procedure for your VPS deployment. If the process starts but does not connect, follow the troubleshooting checks below before changing credentials.
  4. For a scheduled event, check the preview. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming feed preview. Click Go live if auto-start is not enabled. YouTube’s documented scheduled workflow is to start the encoder, wait for the preview, and then go live.
  5. Verify viewers can watch. Check stream health in Live Control Room, then open the channel or event watch page and confirm it is accessible and has picture and sound. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring the stream; if you have a backup encoder, test its failover before relying on it.

Does a VPS reboot require a new stream key?

Not by itself. A reboot does not inherently require key rotation: restart the encoder using the existing stream URL and current key. YouTube describes the key as the credential an encoder uses to send its feed. Reset it if it has been exposed or you otherwise need to replace it, then update the encoder with the new key. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.

Will the stream resume automatically?

YouTube provides auto-start and auto-stop settings that can let the encoder start or stop a stream. Check the setting on the specific stream rather than assuming it is enabled. For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube’s published workflow calls for checking the preview and clicking Go live; it does not guarantee that every interrupted event will resume automatically after a VPS reboot. Confirm the state in Live Control Room and on the watch page.

Troubleshoot a stream that will not return

  • The encoder process is not running: Start it using the service or container configuration for your VPS. If you want it to return after future reboots, configure process startup using the method supported by your deployment.
  • The encoder reports a start error: Copy the current stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder and try again. If you use account sign-in without a key, YouTube directs you to the encoder software’s support. See YouTube’s encoder start-error guidance.
  • The connection times out: Recheck the exact server URL and protocol in the encoder settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS; verify that your encoder supports it and is configured to use the correct destination. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting.
  • The feed connects, but the event is not live or public: Check whether the scheduled event still needs you to click Go live, and verify whether auto-start is enabled for that stream.
  • The key was exposed or rotated: Reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in the encoder configuration. Keep the replacement private.
  • You need a safer recovery plan: Test backup-encoder failover before the event if you have a backup, and monitor the preview and stream health rather than assuming a reconnect succeeded. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover testing and monitoring.

Or let it run in the cloud

If this broadcast is a loop of uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
