Use it as source material: locate the best historical captures, save the HTML and assets that still exist, rebuild the site on hosting you control, and test every link and feature. Some pages, images and interactive functions may be impossible to recover because they were never archived or depended on the original server.
What “recover” means in the Wayback Machine
Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine stores snapshots made by crawlers and by people using its save feature. It can expose old HTML, images, CSS, documents and other files, allowing you to reconstruct a site. It does not hand you a deployable backup, restore your former hosting account, or guarantee that every URL and asset exists.
The Internet Archive Help Center says its terms “do not cover backups for the general public” and that it can no longer offer a service to “pack up sites that have been lost.” Plan a rebuild rather than a one-click restore. If you need recurring preservation or a crawl of an entire organisation’s site, investigate a dedicated web-archiving service; Save Page Now captures one page and is not an entire-site crawler.
1. Find the right captures
Start with the exact address
Enter the old homepage URL in the Wayback Machine. Try every address your site may have used:

http://andhttps://www.example.comandexample.com- With and without a trailing slash

/about/,/index.htmland/downloads/
Search the site’s important deep URLs as well as the homepage. A homepage capture can exist even when product pages, images or PDFs were never crawled.
Read the calendar and timeline
Select a year, then inspect the calendar’s marked dates and the capture timeline. Open several dates instead of choosing the newest one automatically. A later capture may contain newer text but broken images; an older capture may have a complete stylesheet, logo and downloadable files.
Check assets directly
Open likely asset paths in separate Wayback searches: image folders, CSS files, JavaScript files, fonts, PDFs and ZIP files. In each archived page, inspect the source or link targets to identify the original filenames and directories. Record the capture date and archived URL for every file you intend to use.
2. Choose the most complete snapshot
Compare candidate dates against the factors that matter for a rebuild:
Recommended Free Tools
| Factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| HTML | Page text, headings, metadata and navigation are present | Missing markup cannot be recreated automatically |
| Assets | Images, CSS, fonts, downloads and media load from archived paths | These determine visual fidelity and usable content |
| URL paths | Original folders and file names are visible | Preserving paths reduces broken links and helps redirects |
| Functionality | Forms, search, menus and scripts behave as expected | Archived interactive features often cannot contact the old server |
| Rights | You own the material or have permission to republish it | An archived copy does not grant copyright or trademark rights |
Keep a capture log with the original URL, archived date, asset status and notes. This prevents you from mixing incompatible versions of a page and gives you a checklist for files that still need to be recreated.
3. Save the archived material
Save a page and its available files
For an individual page, use the Wayback Machine’s save-page feature or download the rendered page through your browser. Internet Archive describes Save Page Now as saving “the page you enter including the images and CSS.” It does not save outlinks and cannot initiate a crawl of an entire website.
- Open the best capture of the page.
- Save the HTML to a local project directory.
- Download each recoverable image, stylesheet, script, font and document separately.
- Use the original directory and filename structure, for example
assets/css/site.cssandimages/logo.png. - Keep a plain-text manifest that maps each original URL to its local file and capture date.
Browser “Save page” output may rewrite links to archived URLs or create a browser-specific folder. Treat that output as raw material: inspect it, remove archive replay prefixes, and make links point to your own local paths.
Preserve files before editing
Make an untouched copy of every downloaded file. Work in a separate rebuild directory and use source control if possible. Keep the capture date in commit messages or filenames so you can return to the original version if an edit introduces a mistake.
4. Rebuild the site on hosting you control
Create the page structure
Start with the recovered navigation and URL map. Recreate shared elements such as the header, footer, menus and typography before filling in individual pages. A static site generator, a content-management system or plain HTML can all work; choose the option you can maintain and secure.
Repair links and paths
- Convert archived absolute links to your new domain or relative paths.
- Preserve old slugs where practical.
- Add 301 redirects from changed URLs to their new equivalents.
- Replace links to files that were not captured with a clear “file unavailable” message or a recreated document.
- Check case sensitivity: a path that works on one host may fail on another.
Recreate styles and media
Fix CSS references, font paths, background images and responsive rules. Inspect pages at desktop and mobile widths. If an image is missing, search other capture dates and likely alternate filenames before substituting a new asset. Do not assume a broken image is a hosting problem; it may never have been archived.
Replace server-side behavior
Archived HTML cannot restore the original database, server code, email delivery or account system. Rebuild forms with a current, secure provider, replace search with a new index, and remove scripts that call the former host. Never deploy an old login form or unmaintained third-party library without reviewing it for security.

5. Test the rebuilt website
Test in a staging environment before changing DNS. Use this checklist:
- Open the homepage and every recovered navigation item.
- Run a crawler or link checker to find 404s, redirect loops and archived URLs.
- Verify images, CSS, fonts, PDFs and downloads return the expected content type.
- Test forms, validation, confirmation messages and email delivery with non-production data.
- Check JavaScript menus, search, video embeds and other interactive controls.
- Review keyboard navigation, contrast, headings and mobile layouts.
- Confirm canonical URLs, robots rules, sitemap entries and analytics settings.
- Check that private or licensed material is not accidentally public.
Internet Archive notes that when a dynamic page contains forms, JavaScript or other elements requiring interaction with the originating host, the archive will not contain the original site’s functionality. Expect to replace behavior, not merely copy markup.
Why pages and assets may be missing
The crawler never reached the URL
Wayback coverage is selective. A page linked only behind a form, a robots rule or an unindexed path may have no capture. Search exact filenames and older subdomains before concluding that it is gone.
Robots.txt or an owner exclusion blocked it
Site owners can request exclusions, and crawl rules can prevent paths from being stored. A blank calendar for a known URL may reflect an exclusion rather than a temporary outage.
Replay cannot reproduce the original environment
Third-party APIs, databases, authentication, payment flows, server-side includes and dynamically generated content are not restored by an archived HTML file. Capture the visible content, then implement a modern replacement.

Images can fail while HTML succeeds, or a stylesheet can be captured without its referenced fonts. Compare dates, inspect asset URLs and search for copies in other pages. If no archived copy exists, document the gap and recreate only what you can verify.
Rights, evidence and responsible reuse
Use archived text, images, code and trademarks only when you own the rights or have permission. An archived page proves that a representation was available at a particular time; it does not transfer copyright, licenses or personal-data permissions. Remove obsolete personal information and credentials rather than republishing it.
If you need a formal evidentiary record, consult Internet Archive’s legal or affidavit procedure. A screenshot alone is not automatically authoritative: preserve the capture URL, date, downloaded files and chain of custody, and obtain legal advice for your jurisdiction and purpose.
Or skip the browser setup
For a new screenshot of a live replacement, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is not a substitute for recovering historical Wayback files, but it can document your rebuilt pages consistently.

Common recovery problems and fixes
“No captures found”
Try protocol, hostname, slash and path variants, plus known image and document URLs. Search older subdomains and ask former colleagues for the exact address. If every variant is empty, the URL may have been excluded or never crawled.
The page loads but looks unstyled
Inspect the HTML for stylesheet links, search those exact CSS URLs in Wayback, and update local paths. Check whether the CSS references additional images or fonts that also need downloading.
Images show archive errors
Look for alternate capture dates and original filenames. Download the asset into your own directory and change the page reference instead of leaving a replay URL.
Forms or scripts do nothing
That behavior normally depended on the original server. Replace the endpoint and client code with a current implementation, then test it in staging. Do not expose archived credentials or send real submissions to an unknown endpoint.

Downloads are corrupt
Confirm the archived response is the intended file, not an HTML replay or error page. Compare file size and content type across dates, save in binary mode, and test the document locally before deployment.
The rebuilt site has legal concerns
Pause publication, identify the rights holder, remove personal or licensed material you cannot reuse, and obtain permission or legal advice. Keep the archive record privately if it is needed for evidence.
Prevent the next loss
Keep the production source repository, media and database exports under your control. Automate host backups, test restoration on a schedule, retain copies in more than one location, and document DNS, deployment and third-party dependencies. For long-term public preservation, combine those backups with an archiving service rather than relying on a single Wayback capture.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Wayback Machine give me my old hosting account or database?
No. It can provide captured public files, not the original hosting account, database, server configuration or private records. Those must come from your own backups or the former host.
Should I always use the newest capture?
No. Select the date with the best combination of HTML, assets, URL paths and usable content; an older capture can be more complete.
Does Save Page Now archive all links on a page?
No. It saves the submitted page and available resources, but not its outlinks or an entire site crawl.
Can I republish everything I find in an archive?
Only when you own the rights or have permission. Archived availability does not grant copyright, trademark or privacy permissions.
