Restore the encoder output if needed, then verify the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and in the viewer-facing player. A restored Windows connection by itself does not confirm that the encoder reconnected or that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Recover the stream in order

Confirm the streaming PC is online
Check that Windows reports a network connection and that the streaming PC can reach the internet. If it cannot, troubleshoot the PC’s connection before changing the encoder or YouTube settings. YouTube’s guidance covers the stream and encoder, not a universal Windows connectivity monitor or recovery script.

Check the encoder’s output
Make sure the encoder is still running and inspect its status or logs for an output, connection, or authentication error. Confirm it is configured to send to the intended YouTube server with the correct stream key. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that tells the encoder where to send its feed and lets YouTube accept it (Manage live stream settings).

Inspect Live Control Room
Open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Check whether a preview appears, review the stream-health status, and follow any specific error instructions. Live Control Room also provides real-time stream health and analytics (See your live stream’s metrics).

Resume the encoder only if its state calls for it
If the encoder reports that output stopped, use that encoder’s own start or resume control according to its current documentation. If it shows an active, healthy output, avoid restarting it without a reason. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings allow a stream to be started or stopped from the encoder; they do not establish that YouTube detects Windows network loss or guarantees automatic reconnection (Manage live stream settings).
For a third-party encoder start error, YouTube’s documented troubleshooting step is to copy the stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder. If an integration signs in without using a stream key and fails, YouTube directs users to contact the software vendor (Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream). Do not reset or replace the key as a routine response to an internet outage.

Verify what viewers see
Once output resumes, confirm that the preview and viewer-facing player show the stream as live. Continue watching the health indicators rather than assuming that an encoder’s “connected” message means YouTube is receiving usable video and audio. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality continuously (YouTube live streaming tips – Computer; See your live stream’s metrics).

Why the stream may not reconnect
Internet access returning restores only the network layer. The encoder may have stopped sending, may still report an output error, or may not have resumed a usable feed. YouTube’s documentation explains stream keys, encoder start errors, and stream-health checks, but it does not promise that a particular encoder will reconnect after a Windows network outage. Treat the three checks—Windows online, encoder sending, YouTube live and healthy—as separate recovery milestones.
Auto-start and auto-stop are not a substitute for network recovery: YouTube describes them as controls for starting or stopping a stream from the encoder, not as a guarantee that a dropped Windows connection will be detected and repaired.
Reduce the chance of another long interruption
Test backup encoder failover
If you use a backup encoder, test it before relying on it. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection, then checking that playback rolls over to the backup encoder (YouTube live streaming tips – Computer). Confirm what viewers see during the handoff rather than assuming a backup is working because it is configured.

Check the recording independently
If you record locally, check that the archive file exists and is still growing after recovery. A working YouTube stream and a working local recording are separate outcomes.
Choose settings your connection can sustain
YouTube recommends choosing stream quality that is reliable for the available internet connection and testing with representative audio and motion. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for supported resolutions, frame rates, bitrates, and keyframe recommendations rather than raising quality beyond what the connection can sustain (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

YouTube says that when encoder output ends, the stream stops. Streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; that guidance is not a promise of seamless playback through an interruption or of archive behavior for a continuous broadcast lasting longer than 12 hours (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder). After recovery, check the live player and any recording you need instead of assuming the original broadcast continued uninterrupted.
