The most useful feedback capture is short, focused, and reproducible: show only the tab, window, app, or region that matters; narrate the expected and actual result; stop to check the clip; then share it with the right people. Before recording, close unrelated material and hide notifications or confidential data. The steps below cover a tool-neutral workflow, Loom on desktop and mobile, and Zoom meeting recordings.
Plan the feedback before you press Record
A recording should answer one question, such as “Why does checkout fail after I click Pay?” Avoid combining unrelated bugs in one clip. Write a one-sentence outline:
- Context: what you were trying to do.
- Action: the exact click, keystroke, or data entry that matters.
- Expected result: what should have happened.
- Actual result: what happened instead, including any error text.
Use a test account and safe sample data when possible. Remove customer names, tokens, passwords, private messages, medical information, and internal documents from view. A full-screen capture can expose every open app and file; a smaller capture area is safer and easier to follow.
Choose the smallest useful capture

Add a camera bubble only when seeing the speaker materially helps (for example, a usability interview). Screen-only video is usually clearer for software defects. Narration is optional: use it when the sequence or expected result would otherwise be ambiguous.

Prepare the screen, audio, and permissions
- Set the exact starting state. Open the page or app, sign in with a least-privilege test account, and place the cursor where the demonstration begins.
- Clear distractions. Close unrelated tabs and windows, pause notification banners, and remove sensitive text from the visible area. If full-screen capture is unavoidable, inspect every monitor and the taskbar or dock.
- Select the input. Choose the intended microphone, if any, and speak for a few seconds. Confirm the recorder’s audio meter or indicator moves. A built-in microphone is sufficient for many clips; a separate USB microphone is optional when voice clarity is poor.
- Check organizational rules. Recording a customer account, meeting, or employee may require consent or an approved storage location. Use your employer’s policy and the recipient’s access requirements.
Jeong Lee, Loom’s senior marketing manager, gives the vendor’s advice: “Pro tip: Use a good-quality microphone to record audio.” That is product guidance, not an independent audio test.
Record a concise reproduction
- Start with one sentence: “I expected X, but Y happened after Z.”
- Perform the steps at a readable pace. Keep the pointer visible and pause briefly on important controls or error messages.
- Show the expected state, then the actual state. If the problem is intermittent, say how often it occurs and include the relevant timestamp or attempt number.
- Do not browse unrelated pages or discuss multiple issues. Stop as soon as the recipient has enough evidence to reproduce the problem.
For a design review, explain the decision the viewer should make (“Is this button label understandable?”) rather than narrating every mouse movement. For a support ticket, include the URL or feature name in the title or description, but do not put secrets in either.
Stop, inspect, and edit before sharing
- Stop the recorder and play the entire clip.
- Check that text is legible at normal playback size, the microphone is understandable, and the clip starts and ends cleanly.
- Trim dead time, failed attempts, passwords, notification popups, and unrelated conversations. Retake rather than explaining a confusing section in a long message.
- Give the file or hosted recording a descriptive title, such as “Safari checkout error after selecting Apple Pay.”
- Confirm who can view it. Test the link in a private browser window or with a colleague who has the intended account level. Do not assume that a link is private because it is unlisted.
Use a local file when policy requires your own storage or the recipient cannot access a hosted service. Use a hosted link when comments, playback controls, and access revocation are valuable. In either case, send a one-line summary and the expected-versus-actual result with the capture.
Recording with Loom
Loom’s controls differ between its desktop app, browser extension, iOS app, and Android app. Follow the interface for the platform you are actually using rather than treating one workflow as universal.
Loom desktop app
In the desktop app, choose a full screen, window, or (on a paid plan, according to Loom’s support documentation) a custom size. Toggle the camera as needed, select or disable the microphone, and check the audio indicator before starting. Features such as drawing, click highlighting, HD capture, and custom dimensions can depend on the plan. Keep the capture scope as small as the issue allows.
Loom Chrome extension
The Chrome extension is browser-centered and can capture the full screen, a window, the current tab, or the camera only. Loom documents limitations when placing a camera bubble outside Chrome and when launching from several non-Chrome browsers. If the workflow crosses another application, use the desktop app or a recorder that supports that scope.

Loom on iOS
Loom’s iOS guidance covers screen recording with optional microphone narration. It does not support screen plus camera together in Loom, so do not promise a desktop-style camera bubble in a mobile instruction. Before starting, use iOS’s recording controls to select whether the microphone is on, then verify the saved clip and its sharing permissions.
Loom on Android
Loom documents screen-only and screen/audio/camera combinations on Android and states that Android 8.0 or later is required. System prompts can appear before capture begins; read them carefully and stop if the selected scope would expose private notifications.

Recording a Zoom meeting or live demonstration
Zoom recording is different from making a standalone bug clip because the meeting host controls recording permissions and participants receive a recording notice.
Get permission and choose local or cloud storage
A host can record locally or grant a participant recording permission. In a meeting, use the host’s recording control and wait for the visible recording indicator. Local recordings are saved on the recording computer and can be uploaded separately. Zoom notes that local recording does not provide audio transcription and does not create separate shared-screen and participant recordings in the same way cloud recording can.
Share only what the meeting needs
When you share the entire screen, participants can see everything displayed, including opened apps and files. Prefer a specific application or portion of the screen, close unrelated material, and stop sharing immediately after the demonstration. Privacy and access checklist
- Use a dedicated test account and non-production data.
- Hide browser bookmarks, password managers, chat previews, email, and desktop notifications.
- Check every monitor if recording the full display.
- Obtain the host’s permission for Zoom recordings and follow workplace consent rules; legal requirements vary by jurisdiction.
- Store the file only where the intended audience can access it, and remove access when the issue is closed.
- Describe the issue in the message accompanying the link so recipients do not have to guess what to watch.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
The video is black or shows the wrong window
Re-select the tab, window, or region after moving or minimizing it. Some operating-system privacy settings block screen capture until permission is granted; enable the recorder in the system’s screen-recording or privacy settings, restart it, and test a five-second clip.
There is no voice
Confirm the intended microphone is selected, that the operating system permits microphone access, and that the audio meter moves before recording. If the meter is active but playback is silent, check the player volume and whether the track was muted during export. Retake the clip after a short test rather than relying on an inaudible explanation.
The pointer or text is hard to follow
Increase application zoom, move the pointer deliberately, and capture a single window or region. Avoid rapidly scrolling. If the recorder offers click highlighting or annotations, use them only where they clarify the action; some Loom plans restrict those features.
The file is too large or the upload fails
Trim pauses and failed attempts first. If policy permits, export a smaller resolution or use a hosted link. For a local file, verify available disk space and keep the original until the recipient confirms receipt.
A viewer cannot open the link
Check the recording’s visibility setting, organization login requirement, and expiration policy. Test with the recipient’s account type. If access cannot be made reliable, send an approved local file through your organization’s file-sharing system.
The meeting recording is missing a participant or audio
Confirm that the host actually granted recording permission, that the recording indicator was visible, and whether the meeting used local or cloud recording. Local Zoom recordings have the limitations described in Zoom’s support article; ask the host for the cloud version or a separate upload when policy allows.
