You can record a YouTube video with a phone you already own: frame the shot, check the light and sound, record, then upload the saved file in the YouTube app or YouTube Studio. On a computer, record with separate software first—YouTube’s computer workflow uploads a video file; it does not record webcam footage.
Choose how you’ll record
The simplest route depends on the device you have and the kind of video you want to make. YouTube’s beginner guidance recommends starting with available equipment and adding gear only when it solves a real problem.
- Phone: Record with the phone’s camera, then upload in the YouTube app. A phone is enough to get started. YouTube’s mobile filming tips cover framing, light, and sound.
- Computer: Record and save a video using separate computer software, then upload it through YouTube Studio. YouTube states that it does not have a webcam feature for recording videos on a computer. See Record & upload a video.
- Separate camera: A point-and-shoot or DSLR may suit a particular creative goal, but it is not a requirement. Consider what you want to make and try a mobile device before investing. Check that a camera has an external-microphone port before buying a mic. YouTube’s equipment tips discuss camera and microphone options.
Prepare the shot before you press record
Choose the location and background, decide how you will frame the subject, and check that the camera, lights, and microphone work. Charge your devices; for a more involved shoot, prepare backups such as batteries, memory cards, or hard drives. If you are filming somewhere you do not control, get the permissions you need and respect other people’s privacy. YouTube’s filming tips cover location planning and preparation.
Frame for the video you want
For conventional horizontal video, hold the phone horizontally to frame for 16:9 HD. When possible, use the rear camera, which records at a higher resolution. Turn off notifications so they do not interrupt a take. If you are comfortable using manual controls, set and lock focus and exposure to avoid visible shifts while recording.

Make the phone steady without buying anything
Rest the phone on a stable surface or use support you already have. A flexible tripod or selfie stick is an optional way to position the phone or make mobile shots easier; it is not necessary to start recording.
Get clear light and sound
Use soft, even light
At home, try positioning yourself near a window. Outdoors, shade can help avoid harsh highlights and dark shadows. A white card or reflector can bounce light onto the subject. If daylight and room lighting do not work for the shot, an appropriate soft light or camera-mounted light may help—but first see whether an existing light source will do.

Make the speaker easy to hear
Move closer to the built-in microphone and do not cover it. Reduce distracting noise: turn off fans, close windows, and soften echo from hard surfaces with softer materials. In a noisy setting, a compatible external microphone may help. YouTube’s equipment guidance notes that an onboard camera microphone may require staying three to four feet away for the best audio; this is guidance, not a guaranteed result for every device or room.
A shotgun microphone is directional and can capture natural sound from farther away. A wireless lavalier microphone attaches to a person and can suit a speaker who is moving or farther from the camera. Before buying an external mic, confirm that it works with your phone or camera and that the camera has the required microphone connection.

Decide whether optional equipment solves a real problem
Start with your existing equipment and fix the actual limitation you notice. These categories address different needs:

There is no universally best camera setup: the right choice depends on what you plan to create, the conditions where you film, and how much complexity you want to manage.

Record, then upload the saved video
Recording and uploading are separate steps. On a computer, first make and save the video with recording software; then upload the file in YouTube Studio. On a phone, record with the camera and use the YouTube app to upload.
- Record and save: Use your phone camera or computer recording software. Check that the saved video plays before moving on.
- Open the upload workflow: On desktop, use YouTube Studio’s computer upload workflow. On mobile, upload through the YouTube app.
- Set the video details: Add a title and choose the visibility you want. The mobile upload workflow also asks you to set the audience.
- Review before publishing: Confirm that the selected file and details are right, then complete the upload and publishing choices shown in YouTube’s workflow.
