A real healthcare breach can give scammers details they use to make fake emails sound convincing. Treat an unexpected message as unverified if it pressures you to act, asks for a password or sensitive information, or sends you to a login page. Don’t click its links or use its phone number to check it: contact the provider or insurer through a website or number you already trust, then follow the organization’s confirmed instructions.

How can I tell if a data breach email is real?

No single clue proves that a message is genuine or fraudulent. A familiar logo, polished writing, or a display name that matches your provider can be copied. Likewise, a message mentioning a real breach is not authenticated by that detail. Judge the request and verify it independently.

  • Unexpected urgency: Be cautious if the email threatens account closure, demands immediate action, or says you must act to protect your information.
  • Requests for secrets or sensitive details: Pause if it asks you to enter a password, provide insurance or payment details, or send medical or other personal information.
  • Links and attachments: A link to an unfamiliar or misspelled domain, or one that does not match the organization you expect, is a warning sign. Don’t open an unexpected attachment or enter credentials on a page reached from the email.
  • Sender details: Check the full sender address, not just the visible name. A plausible-looking address or message is still not proof that it is legitimate.

Attackers may impersonate a provider, billing company, or IT support. HHS describes healthcare phishing that directs targets to a fake password-change page; stolen credentials can then help attackers reach patient or financial information. HHS also identifies email phishing as a route to credential theft or malware. (HHS Cyber Gateway, HICP; HHS, Cybersecurity in Healthcare: Phishing Attacks)

What should I do if I get a phishing email after a hospital data breach?

Use this sequence as a practical safety check, not a formal test that can classify every message. HHS cybersecurity guidance is aimed mainly at healthcare organizations and their workforce; no individual sign reliably settles whether an email is real.

  1. Stop before interacting. Don’t click, open an attachment, reply, enter a password, or send information while the message is unverified.
  2. Review what it asks and where it sends you. Note any demand for credentials, payment, insurance or medical details, or an urgent reset. Inspect the full sender address and link destination without opening the link; unexpected domains and misspellings are warning signs.
  3. Verify through a separate trusted route. Type the provider’s or insurer’s known website address yourself, or call a number from a trusted source such as a prior statement or the organization’s official website. Ask whether the message and requested action are genuine. Don’t use contact details in the suspicious email.
  4. Report it through the organization’s established channel. Use its published phishing-reporting or IT contact. Keep the original message if the organization asks for it, but don’t forward sensitive information broadly.
  5. Follow confirmed breach instructions. If the organization confirms an incident, ask what information was involved and which protective steps apply to you. Use the notice or instructions obtained through the trusted channel rather than assuming every type of account or personal data was exposed.

HHS advises healthcare personnel to report suspected phishing, avoid giving sensitive information under pressure, check the source, and verify unexpected requests by calling. For a patient or caregiver, the safe equivalent is calling through a number obtained independently. (HHS 405(d), Program in Review 2021)

Should I click the link in a breach notification?

Not until you have verified the message and the requested action through a separate trusted route. If you need to read a notice or check an account, go to the organization’s known website yourself or call a trusted number and ask how to proceed. This avoids relying on a link that could lead to a counterfeit login page.

HHS says notices for breaches of unsecured protected health information must be provided without unreasonable delay and no later than 60 days after discovery. To the extent possible, a notice should explain what happened, the types of information involved, steps people can take to protect themselves, the organization’s mitigation or response, and contact information. A message claiming to be a notice should still be checked against information obtained separately. (HHS OCR, Breach Notification Rule)

Can a real healthcare provider email me?

Yes. HHS says the HIPAA Privacy Rule permits providers to email patients when they use reasonable safeguards, such as checking the destination address and limiting information in unencrypted messages. So an email from a healthcare provider is not automatically a scam; verify unexpected requests rather than relying on email alone. Patients may ask for another communication method or location when reasonable. (HHS OCR, Email communications with patients FAQ)

What can a healthcare breach expose?

The information involved varies by incident, so don’t infer what was exposed from a generic warning or a scammer’s claim. In an announcement dated April 23, 2025, HHS’s Office for Civil Rights described a phishing attack at PIH Health in June 2019 that compromised 45 employee email accounts and affected 189,763 individuals. The case-specific information included names, addresses, dates of birth, driver’s-license numbers, Social Security numbers, diagnoses, lab results, medications, treatment and claims information, and financial information. Those figures describe that incident; they are not an estimate of how common phishing is today. (HHS OCR, PIH Health phishing settlement announcement)

If you believe a HIPAA-covered organization violated privacy or security rules, you can file a complaint with HHS OCR. Its complaint process applies to entities covered by the relevant rules; not every organization that handles health-related data is covered by HIPAA.
