To reboot a Google Home or Nest speaker or display, unplug its power cord for one minute and reconnect it, or open the device in the Google Home app and select Settings > More > Reboot. A reboot does not erase the device’s setup. A factory reset does, so treat it as a last resort and check the exact model before using any reset buttons.
How do I reboot my Google Home?
Google provides two ways to restart a speaker or display without clearing its setup. Choose the one that is easiest for you.
- Unplug it: Check that the power cord is firmly connected, unplug it from the outlet, wait one minute, then reconnect it.
- Use the Google Home app: Confirm that your phone or tablet and the device are linked to the same Google account. Open the device tile, then select Settings > More > Reboot.
If the device is missing from the app or setup is stuck, Google also recommends a shorter restart for that situation: unplug the speaker or display for 10 seconds, then reconnect it. That setup-specific step is distinct from the one-minute procedure on Google’s general reboot instructions.
Reboot or factory reset: which should you use?
A reboot restarts the device and preserves its normal setup. A factory reset clears device data, disconnects the device from home members, and cannot be undone. Try a reboot and the relevant connection or setup fixes before considering a reset.

| Option | What it does | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Unplug and reconnect | Restarts the device without erasing its setup. | Access to the power cord and outlet; no app access required. |
| App reboot | Restarts the device without erasing its setup. | The Google Home app, the linked account, and the device tile. |
| Factory reset | Erases device data and disconnects it from home members. | The reset procedure for the exact model, followed by setup again. |
Google explains the difference and provides model-specific reset directions in its factory-reset instructions. Do not use a reset button combination as a substitute for rebooting.
If the device doesn’t appear in the Google Home app
Start with the setup-specific restart above. Then check the account, network details, and distance between your phone and the speaker or display:

- If setup still fails, try using another phone or tablet.
These are Google’s recommended checks for a speaker or display that doesn’t appear during setup.
If you changed your Wi-Fi name or password
If the device responds to voice commands, Google says it is connected to Wi-Fi. If you changed your router credentials and it no longer connects, use the Google Home app’s device settings to forget the old network, then reconnect through setup. Follow Google’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting instructions for the app steps. Reserve a factory reset for when forgetting or changing the network through the app fails, including if setup reports that it could not communicate with the device.

If a software update seems stuck
First check the status for your particular model. Google’s update guidance warns against unplugging the device or changing Wi-Fi settings while an update is downloading. If an update has lasted more than 20 minutes, Google’s published recovery sequence is:
- Reboot the speaker or display.
- Reboot the router.
- If the update remains stuck, factory reset the device and set it up again.
Some model-specific update instructions also recommend checking the supplied power supply and wall outlet. Indicator lights differ by model, so use the matching entry in Google’s software-update troubleshooting guide rather than interpreting one model’s light pattern as universal.

Factory reset only as a last resort
A factory reset is a destructive step: it clears device data, disconnects the device from home members, and cannot be reversed. The controls differ across Google Home and Nest generations. Identify the exact model and follow its entry in Google’s official reset guide before pressing or holding any button.
For example, Google’s instructions use different controls for Nest Audio, Nest Mini (2nd gen), Home Max, Google Home Mini (1st gen), and Nest Hub displays. These model-specific button actions trigger a factory reset—not a routine reboot.

Does Google Home need regular reboots?
Google’s support instructions describe rebooting as a troubleshooting measure, but they do not establish a schedule for routine reboots, a required cleaning interval, or a preventive replacement cycle. If a device has a problem, check its power connection, Wi-Fi, app setup, and update status before taking more disruptive action.
