To install Sony’s detachable disc drive, first confirm your PS5 is in the CFI-2000/7000 model group. Turn it off, unplug it and let it cool; remove the short horizontal feet and circle cover; then align the drive clips with the two holes marked by an inverted triangle and press until it clicks. Refit the circle cover and install the long feet supplied with the drive. Sony requires an internet connection to pair the drive during setup.
Check compatibility and choose the right parts
Sony says its detachable disc drive is compatible only with PS5 consoles in the CFI-2000/7000 model group. The CFI-2000 group is the PS5 Slim family. Check the console’s model number before buying; do not assume the drive fits earlier PS5 hardware. Sony identifies the drive as model CFI-ZDD1.

The optional vertical stand is sold separately, according to Sony’s setup guide. The instructions below describe horizontal placement.
Prepare the PS5 before removing a cover
- Place the console on a soft cloth over a flat, stable surface.
- On the console, select Power > Turn Off PS5. Wait until it is fully off.
- Disconnect the AC cord and all cables, then allow the console to cool. Sony warns that the main unit is hot immediately after use.
- Before handling the drive or console connector, touch a metal-grounded object to discharge static electricity. This is a precaution in Sony’s manual; no special tool is specified as necessary.
Handle edges carefully to avoid pinching fingers in gaps or scraping them on corners. Do not touch the drive’s electrical terminal or the corresponding connector on the console.

Remove the short feet and circle cover
- Turn the console so its bottom faces up and its front faces you.
- Remove the short horizontal feet and set them aside.
- Slightly lift the circle cover to release its clips, then remove it. Keep the cover and short feet safe in case you remove the drive later.
Install the detachable disc drive
- Position the drive so its clips line up with the two console holes marked with an inverted triangle.
- Press the drive firmly into place until it clicks. Do not force it if the clips are not aligned; reposition it and try again.
- Align the clips on the circle cover with their corresponding holes and press the cover until it clicks into place.
- Attach the long horizontal feet supplied with the drive.
- Reconnect the AC cord and cables, then turn on the console. Connect to the internet so the drive and console can pair during setup.
Reattach the other PS5 Slim covers
If you removed a cover for access or need to put a cover back, use the symbols printed on the inside—△, ○, × and □—to identify its position. Match the cover’s clips to the corresponding holes on the console and press it into place until it clicks. Sony cautions that covers must be installed correctly before the console is turned on; an incorrectly fitted cover may cause overheating.

- Drive clips do not line up: Confirm the console is in the supported model group and orient the drive to the two inverted-triangle-marked holes. Do not push against a misaligned drive.
- Circle cover stays loose: Check that its clips line up with the corresponding holes, then press until it clicks.
- A general cover seems misplaced: Check the symbol on its inside against the matching position on the console.
- Drive does not pair during setup: Connect the console to the internet; Sony states an internet connection is required for initial pairing.
Sony’s procedure does not call for a screwdriver or other repair tool. Use the supplied feet and the compatible drive rather than improvising with hardware or assuming accessories for other PS5 models will fit.
