Read Elden Ring: The Road to the Erdtree Volumes 1 through 10 in numerical order, then read Elden Ring: Distant Tales Between, Vol. 1. The ten-volume Road to the Erdtree run is the continuous, Tarnished-led comedy adaptation. Distant Tales Between is a separate anthology of character-focused “what if” stories, so it is best saved until after the main sequence if you want Aseo’s quest to unfold without interruption.

Yen Press’ English catalog treats The Road to the Erdtree as one numbered series. Follow the volumes in this order:

Why Road to the Erdtree comes first
The Road to the Erdtree is a continuous adaptation by artist Nikiichi Tobita, based on FromSoftware’s ELDEN RING. Yen Press classifies it as a “Comedy Sword and Sorcery Video Game Tie-in.” Its central thread follows Aseo, a Tarnished who is trying to make his way toward becoming Elden Lord.

Volume 1 establishes the premise and the protagonist. Yen Press describes the adaptation as an “absurd comedy adventure” that turns the game’s epic, foreboding setting on its head. KADOKAWA’s ComicWalker synopsis introduces Aseo as “a poor, Tarnished wretch” cast out into Limgrave “naked, penniless, hopeless, and maidenless.” Those details signal the book’s approach: it uses the game’s lore and locations, but treats the journey as broad comedy rather than a solemn retelling.
Because Aseo’s journey carries across the numbered books, starting with a later volume can introduce characters, locations and running jokes without their setup. Reading Vol. 1 through Vol. 10 in order preserves the progression of the main quest and the series’ recurring comic beats.
What “main sequence” means here
- The books are numbered Vol. 1 to Vol. 10 by Yen Press as one series.
- Aseo is the through-line, so the narrative continuity is stronger than in an anthology.
- The adaptation is comedic; it is not a panel-by-panel replacement for the game’s story or a lore encyclopedia.
- The Japanese series began in KADOKAWA’s free COMIC Hu web magazine, while Yen Press publishes the English collected editions.
What Distant Tales Between is—and is not
Distant Tales Between is a separate anthology by Haruichi. It does not continue Aseo’s numbered Road to the Erdtree volumes as a conventional sequel. Instead, it asks what might happen to supporting characters and presents alternate-perspective “what if” episodes.

These premises explain why the anthology works best after the main run for a first-time reader. The focus shifts from a Tarnished-led journey to NPC-led vignettes, and the structure changes from an ongoing quest to self-contained episodes. Reading it first will not prevent you from understanding the stories, but it removes the cleanest introduction to the manga’s central adaptation.

Step-by-step reading plan
- Begin with Road to the Erdtree, Vol. 1. Use the volume number, not a retailer’s publication-date sort, to identify the starting point.
- Continue through Volumes 2, 3, 4 and 5. Keep the books in numerical order; the series is designed as one progression.
- Read Volumes 6, 7, 8 and 9. These remain part of the same Aseo-centered line, not optional side material.
- Finish the main run with Vol. 10. Yen Press currently lists Vol. 10 as the end of the numbered sequence.
- Add Distant Tales Between, Vol. 1 afterward. Treat it as an anthology bonus rather than “Road to the Erdtree, Vol. 11.”
If you are rereading rather than starting for the first time, you can sample Distant Tales Between whenever you want an NPC-focused change of pace. The after-Vol. 10 recommendation is for readers who want the clearest first-pass structure and the fewest shifts in narrative viewpoint.

Yen Press publishes the English collected editions. The publisher’s listing for Road to the Erdtree, Vol. 1 identifies a 178-page paperback, ISBN 9781975364892, released May 23, 2023. That information is useful when a retailer displays several ELDEN RING products and you need to confirm that you are buying the manga rather than a game guide, art book or unrelated merchandise.

Can you read the manga free online?
The Japanese serialization is associated with KADOKAWA’s COMIC Hu web magazine and KadoComi. In practice, that means a web search may reveal recent chapters without providing a complete, stable archive from the beginning.
For a full reading order, collected books are the dependable option. A changing web-serialization page should not be mistaken for a permanent free edition: chapter access can change, and the currently visible list may omit earlier installments. English readers should also check whether a page is a Japanese serialization or an English collected release before assuming the language and format match.

- Check the series name: The Road to the Erdtree, not a similarly titled game article.
- Check the chapter number and date; recent availability does not prove that all earlier chapters remain open.

KADOKAWA’s ComicWalker listing dated the game at 16.6 million copies worldwide at the end of June 2022. That figure refers to the video game, not manga sales. It provides context for the size of the source property but should not be used to estimate the circulation of either manga line.

If you are new to both the game and manga
Read Road to the Erdtree Vol. 1 through Vol. 10, then move to Distant Tales Between, Vol. 1. This gives you the continuous protagonist and the main comic premise before introducing alternate viewpoints. You do not need to own or finish the game first to follow the manga’s basic setup.
If you have finished the game
Use the same order if you want an adaptation-led experience. Familiarity with the game will help you recognize locations and NPCs, but it does not change the recommended sequence. After Vol. 10, Distant Tales Between offers a way to spend more time with side characters rather than extending Aseo’s quest.

You can start with Distant Tales Between, Vol. 1, because its chapters are designed as character-centered premises. However, it is a separate anthology, not an alternate entry point into the numbered Road plot. Reading Road first gives the broader context before the anthology narrows its focus.

If you are collecting physical editions
Buy the ten numbered Road paperbacks as one shelf sequence, then place Distant Tales Between beside them as a separate line. Keep the ISBNs and volume numbers in your order records; the shared game name can otherwise make retailer search results confusing.
Common ordering mistakes
- Treating Distant Tales as Volume 11. It is separately cataloged and has a different artist and anthology format.
- Starting with a high-numbered Road volume. The Aseo storyline is intended to begin at Vol. 1.
- Assuming every serialized chapter is still free. KadoComi marks many earlier episodes as unavailable, so web access is not a stable substitute for the books.
- Confusing game sales with manga sales. The 16.6-million figure is for the game as of the end of June 2022.
- Buying an edition without checking language. KADOKAWA’s Japanese serialization and Yen Press’ English paperbacks are separate publication channels.
