To read an RSS or Atom feed in .NET, create an XmlReader for the feed XML and pass it to SyndicationFeed.Load(reader). The result represents the whole feed; its Items collection contains the individual entries as SyndicationItem objects.
Read a feed with SyndicationFeed.Load
Microsoft’s API example uses an XmlReader as input to SyndicationFeed.Load. The following illustrative adaptation prints each entry’s title and first link:
| # | Preview | Product | Price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 |
|
gReader | Feedly | The Old Reader | RSS | News | Buy on Amazon | |
| 2 |

using System.Linq;
using System.ServiceModel.Syndication;
using System.Xml;
using XmlReader reader = XmlReader.Create("https://example.com/feed.xml");
SyndicationFeed feed = SyndicationFeed.Load(reader);
foreach (SyndicationItem item in feed.Items)
{
Console.WriteLine(item.Title?.Text);
Console.WriteLine(item.Links.FirstOrDefault()?.Uri);
}
See Microsoft’s SyndicationFeed.Load API reference for the documented call pattern. The sample illustrates parsing an XML source; it is not a complete HTTP client or a tested production implementation.
Understand the feed and entry objects
SyndicationFeedrepresents the top-level feed. Microsoft describes it as the object for an Atom 1.0<feed>or an RSS 2.0<rss>document (SyndicationFeed reference).SyndicationItemrepresents an individual RSS<item>or Atom<entry>(SyndicationItem reference).SyndicationFeed.Itemsexposes the entries. The collection maps to RSS<item>elements and Atom<entry>elements (Items property reference).
This shared model means code can work with entries from either supported format without treating RSS and Atom as identical XML. For example, an RSS feed calls its entry an <item>, while Atom uses <entry>.

Separate downloading from parsing
SyndicationFeed.Load parses from an XmlReader; your application must still decide how to obtain the XML. The short example creates a reader directly from a URL to show the API shape, but a production application should choose its own HTTP retrieval strategy, timeouts, cancellation behavior, and resource-lifetime handling.
Also account for feed data that may omit fields your application expects. The example uses nullable access for a title and checks for a first link, but applications should define how to display or otherwise handle missing values. Microsoft’s generic Load documentation lists XmlException for invalid XML; catch and handle parsing failures according to the needs of your application. The API reference does not prescribe a complete network security, retry, caching, or malformed-feed policy.

Check framework and package support
Microsoft’s API reference lists applicability for .NET Framework 3.5 through 4.8.1 and .NET Standard 2.0, and the package-provided reference includes .NET 10 and a .NET 11 preview package (API applicability and package reference). Package versions and preview availability can change, so check the documentation for your target framework before adding a package or copying an installation command.
Writing feeds is a separate use
If your application also needs to produce feeds, the SyndicationFeed API documents formatter methods for RSS 2.0 and Atom 1.0 output. That is distinct from reading a feed with Load; consult the SyndicationFeed reference for the available formatting methods.
