Read an OrcaSlicer calibration print as a controlled comparison, not as a single pass/fail test. Identify the test, judge the feature it was designed to expose, and change only the matching setting. A temperature tower informs nozzle temperature; a maximum-volumetric-speed tower sets a material-and-machine flow ceiling; Pressure Advance corrects pressure lag during speed changes; flow ratio adjusts how much plastic is delivered; and retraction addresses travel stringing after flow and Pressure Advance are established.

Use the result for the exact printer, nozzle, extruder, material, filament brand and color, and layer-height range that you tested. Record the observation, calculation and final conservative value in the filament or printer profile so a later change can be traced.

What an OrcaSlicer calibration result actually tells you

Every calibration model isolates a different failure mode. The same visible defect can have several causes, so changing flow whenever a print looks poor usually creates a second problem instead of fixing the first. Start by naming the model you printed, then inspect the feature that model asks you to compare.

  • Temperature: compares thermal balance through stringing, bonding, bridges, overhangs, sagging and surface finish.
  • Maximum volumetric speed: finds how much filament volume the hot end can melt and extrude per second before quality or extrusion becomes unreliable.
  • Pressure Advance: compensates for extrusion-pressure lag when the toolhead accelerates, decelerates or changes direction.
  • Flow ratio: adjusts the quantity of material delivered over a given extrusion command.
  • Retraction: tunes filament pullback during travel to limit stringing, after flow and Pressure Advance are set.

These values are not universal constants for “PLA,” “PETG” or any other material category. A different nozzle diameter, extruder arrangement, filament formulation, pigment, printer, layer height or cooling setup can move the useful value.

Use the calibration sequence OrcaSlicer recommends

OrcaSlicer’s official calibration guide places the core tests in this order:

Stage Primary question What to save
Temperature Which temperature balances bonding, bridges, overhangs, stringing and finish? A temperature or a narrow working range for this filament.
Maximum volumetric speed How much molten plastic can this setup process continuously? A test-derived ceiling, then a conservative everyday limit.
Pressure Advance How much pressure compensation keeps corners and seams consistent? The value for the matching direct-drive or Bowden configuration.
Flow ratio Is the commanded material quantity being delivered accurately? The adjusted ratio in the filament profile.
Retraction How much filament pullback limits travel stringing without causing gaps? A value specific to this printer, material and travel setup.

Use cornering, input-shaping, VFA or tolerance tests only when the symptom points to those areas. A dimensional-fit problem belongs to a tolerance test, while ringing or direction-change artifacts call for motion-related tests rather than a flow change.

Prepare a test so its result is meaningful

  • Load the exact filament you intend to profile. Record brand, color, material designation and any drying or storage treatment.
  • Select the printer profile, nozzle diameter, extruder type and layer height that match the planned prints. Pressure Advance tests have separate direct-drive and Bowden versions.
  • Keep first-layer height, cooling, line width, fan behavior and other relevant profile settings consistent across the comparison. Changing them mid-test hides the effect you are trying to measure.
  • Use a clean nozzle and a properly leveled bed. A partially blocked nozzle can look like a low-flow or low-temperature result.
  • Label the model or photograph it with its settings. A tower without temperature or step labels is difficult to interpret later.
  • Judge the requested feature under the same lighting and viewing angle. Gloss changes can be evidence of a thermal or flow transition, but they should be considered with physical defects rather than alone.

When a test gives a range of acceptable values, select according to the print’s purpose. Strength and layer bonding may favor a warmer setting; a cosmetic bridge or low-stringing part may favor a cooler one. Keep a note of the trade-off instead of pretending one value is best for every model.

How to read the OrcaSlicer temperature tower

Identify what each block represents

Each block was printed at a different nozzle temperature. OrcaSlicer auto-scales the tower for the selected nozzle by default; the reference design is based on a 0.4 mm nozzle and 0.2 mm layer height. Read the temperature label or the generated settings rather than assuming the reference dimensions apply unchanged to your hardware.

Inspect the right features

  • Stringing: Fine hairs between posts indicate that the temperature and retraction combination may be too hot, although retraction is tuned later in the sequence.
  • Layer adhesion and strength: Cold sections can show weak interlayer bonding or easy separation. A visibly clean surface is not useful if the part breaks along layer lines.
  • Bridges and overhangs: Compare how far unsupported lines span and how much they sag. Excess heat can keep plastic soft for too long.
  • Surface finish: Look for roughness, blobs, loss of detail and uneven sheen. A glossy-to-matte change can signal a process transition, but confirm it against adhesion and extrusion quality.
  • Degradation or clogging signs: Excessive heat can darken or degrade some materials, increase stringing, cause sagging or contribute to a blocked nozzle.

Select a temperature

Choose the block with the best balance for the intended part, not simply the prettiest block. Low temperature can produce under-extrusion, weak adhesion and poor bridges; high temperature can produce degradation, clogging, stringing and sagging. If several adjacent temperatures are sound, OrcaSlicer recommends the middle of that band. For a faster print or one requiring higher volumetric flow, consider the higher end of the good band while checking strength and finish.

Save the chosen value in the filament profile used for this material. If you use different temperatures for first layers, bridges or supports, document those as deliberate overrides rather than treating the tower’s value as an all-purpose number.

How to calculate maximum volumetric speed from the tower

Understand what the test measures

Maximum volumetric speed (also called maximum flow) is the limit on melted filament volume per second, measured in mm³/s. OrcaSlicer uses it to cap line speed: when the requested motion would require more volume than the profile allows, the slicer reduces speed to stay below the ceiling. This is different from a printer’s advertised linear speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The result belongs to the tested material and setup. No single value is suitable for all PLA, all printers or all colors. Nozzle diameter, heater capacity, extruder, filament formulation and pigment can all change the point at which extrusion loses consistency.

Use the documented default test range

Input Default Meaning
Start volumetric speed 5 mm³/s The first section of the ramp.
End volumetric speed 20 mm³/s The final section of the ramp.
Step 0.5 mm³/s The increase represented by each millimetre of model height.

Use a different range only when you already know that these limits are unsuitable for your material or machine.

Find the failure boundary

Inspect the tower from bottom to top and locate the last section that remains consistently extruded and visually sound. Defects may appear as under-extrusion, gaps, rough or weak layers, or a sudden change from glossy to matte. The visual transition can warn that the melt system is losing stability even before an obvious gap appears.

Measure the model height immediately before defects begin with digital calipers or a ruler. Calipers make a small boundary easier to read, but a ruler is sufficient when the transition is broad. Do not measure the height of the first visibly failed section; the formula uses the boundary just before failure.

Apply the formula

Calculate the test-derived ceiling as:

filament maximum volumetric speed = start speed + (measured height × step)

For the documented example, a 5 mm³/s start, a 0.5 mm³/s-per-millimetre step and a 19 mm measured height produce:

5 + (19 × 0.5) = 14.5 mm³/s

Enter the calculated value in the active filament settings and save the material profile. Treat 14.5 mm³/s as an upper estimate from that test, not as a guaranteed everyday setting.

Build in a safety margin

The maximum-flow test is a best-case test: it does not include retraction and may not reproduce every travel move, geometry, cooling condition or long-duration load. OrcaSlicer’s guidance suggests reducing the measured value by 10–20%, or further when quality and strength demand it. For the 14.5 mm³/s example, a 10% reduction is 13.05 mm³/s and a 20% reduction is 11.6 mm³/s; choose within that conservative range only after checking real parts. Record both the measured ceiling and the value you actually use so the distinction is clear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recognize an incorrect ceiling

  • If the ceiling is too low, the slicer becomes flow-limited and print times increase even though the printer could have maintained more throughput.
  • If it is too high, the printer may show sparse lines, rough surfaces, weak layers, color or sheen changes, skipped extrusion or nozzle blockage.
  • If a later profile change alters nozzle, heater, extruder, material or filament, repeat the test or lower the ceiling until the new setup is verified.

How to read Pressure Advance results

What Pressure Advance corrects

During acceleration, deceleration and direction changes, pressure in the nozzle does not change instantly. Pressure Advance anticipates that lag by adjusting extrusion so corners and seams do not receive too much or too little material. It is not a substitute for flow ratio: Pressure Advance changes timing around speed changes, while flow ratio changes the overall quantity extruded.

Choose the matching test and extruder version

OrcaSlicer provides tower, pattern and line methods, with separate direct-drive and Bowden variants. Select the version that matches the extruder on the printer being calibrated. On a tower, inspect corners and seams for bulges, gaps and inconsistent sharpness. On a line test, choose the line that appears most even from end to end. The line method depends heavily on first-layer quality, so level the bed and ensure a reliable mesh before judging it.

Calculate a tower value

The tower increases the value by the configured step for each millimetre of height:

PressureAdvance = start value + (step × measured height)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the OrcaSlicer example, a start value of 0, a step of 0.002 and an 8 mm measured height give:

0 + (0.002 × 8) = 0.016

This 0.016 is a worked example, not a universal setting. Measure the height corresponding to the cleanest corner or seam transition in your own tower, calculate the value and save it to the material profile used for the test.

The official documentation describes the progression this way: “The Pressure Advance value rises progressively from the start value at the bottom of the tower to the end value at the top, one step per millimetre of height.” Keep the configured start, end and step with your record; otherwise the same measured height cannot be reproduced.

Firmware requirements and cautions

Marlin printers require Linear Advance (the M900 command) to be enabled in firmware for Pressure Advance-style calibration to have an effect. Confirm that the firmware and start-up G-code actually apply the resulting value. The OrcaSlicer documentation also warns Bambu Lab X1/X1C users not to select the separate “Flow calibration” option when running OrcaSlicer’s calibration, because that is a different procedure.

For the legacy passes, apply the selected percentage modifier to the previous ratio with:

FlowRatio_new = FlowRatio_old × (100 + modifier) / 100

OrcaSlicer’s worked example starts at 0.98 and selects a +5 modifier:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

0.98 × (100 + 5) / 100 = 1.029

Save the resulting ratio in the filament profile, then run Pass 2. The documented Pass 2 example uses modifiers from −9 through 0, allowing a finer comparison around the first-pass result.

Do not mix formulas between modes

Newer YOLO calibration modes use a different operation: FlowRatio_new = FlowRatio_old ± modifier. The legacy passes use the percentage formula above. Check which mode generated the blocks before calculating; applying the percentage equation to a YOLO result, or the additive equation to a legacy result, changes the setting by the wrong amount.

Flow ratio cannot correct a pressure-lag artifact at corners, and Pressure Advance cannot correct a globally overfilled or underfilled top surface. If both symptoms appear, finish the appropriate test for each rather than forcing one value to solve both.

Retraction and the tests beyond the core sequence

Retraction comes after flow and Pressure Advance

Retraction changes how far and how quickly filament is pulled back during travel. Because extrusion quantity and pressure behavior affect stringing, OrcaSlicer recommends calibrating retraction after flow ratio and Pressure Advance. The correct value depends on the printer, extruder path, material, temperature, travel behavior and hardware; the documentation does not establish one universal distance or speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When running a retraction test, compare hairs between separated features, start-of-line gaps, blobs after travel and any grinding or delayed extrusion after unretraction. A setting that eliminates every hair by pulling too aggressively may create missing material at the next feature, so judge both travel cleanliness and restart quality.

Use symptom-specific tests

  • Tolerance test: Use when mating parts, holes or clearances are dimensionally wrong. A flow change can alter dimensions but will not characterize the printer’s clearance behavior as directly.
  • Cornering test: Use when artifacts cluster at sharp direction changes and are not explained by Pressure Advance alone.
  • Input-shaping test: Use for ringing or vibration patterns tied to acceleration and resonance.
  • VFA test: Use for repeating vertical fine artifacts associated with motion systems or motor behavior.

Choose the right saved profile, not just the best-looking block

When comparing two calibration runs or deciding whether to reuse a profile, compare all of these axes:

Axis Why it changes the result What to record
Material and filament Polymer formulation, additives, color and moisture alter melting and extrusion. Material type, brand, color, spool and drying state.
Printer and extruder Heater capacity, melt path and drive arrangement change pressure and throughput. Printer, hot-end/nozzle, direct-drive or Bowden.
Nozzle and layer height Orifice size and layer geometry change required volume and thermal load. Nozzle diameter, layer height and relevant line widths.
Visual objective A strength-oriented part may favor a warmer temperature or lower flow ceiling than a cosmetic prototype. Whether the priority is bonding, bridges, speed, surface finish or low stringing.
Test ceiling versus working value The highest successful tower section is not automatically a reliable production limit. Measured maximum and the conservative value entered in the profile.

If you change only the filament color but keep the same profile, treat the old values as provisional. Print a small verification model and watch for under-extrusion, changed sheen, corner defects or stringing before committing to a long job.

Troubleshoot a result that does not make sense

Observation Likely interpretation Next action
Every temperature block is poor The issue may be a dirty nozzle, wet filament, bed or cooling problem rather than temperature alone. Correct the mechanical or material issue, then rerun the tower.
Defects start at the same height but the surface only changes sheen The melt system may be approaching its volumetric limit before a visible gap forms. Use the last stable height in the formula and apply a safety reduction.
Top surfaces are all rough in a flow test First-layer or mechanical consistency may be masking the ratio difference. Verify leveling, nozzle condition and extrusion mechanics before selecting a block.
Corners improve but long straight walls remain thin Pressure Advance is addressing timing, while flow ratio or volumetric speed may still be wrong. Recheck flow blocks and maximum volumetric speed separately.
Retraction removes strings but causes gaps after travel Retraction is too aggressive or too fast for the material and extruder. Choose the best compromise and lower the pullback or speed incrementally.
A value works on one printer but not another Calibration values are setup-specific. Create a profile for the second printer and extruder instead of copying blindly.

Worked example: turning several observations into a profile

Suppose a temperature tower shows weak bonding at its two coldest blocks, clean bridges and surfaces through four middle blocks, and sagging at the hottest block. Record the contiguous good range, then choose its midpoint for ordinary parts. If a later high-speed job needs more melt capacity, test the high end of that range rather than silently raising the temperature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A maximum-volumetric-speed tower with the documented 5 mm³/s start and 0.5 mm³/s step remains sound through 19 mm, then becomes matte and under-extruded. Calculate 5 + (19 × 0.5) = 14.5 mm³/s. Enter a lower production ceiling after applying the recommended 10–20% reduction, and verify it on a large wall or infill pattern.

Next, a Pressure Advance tower has its cleanest corners at 8 mm with a 0.002 step from zero. The calculated value is 0.016. Save that value only for the tested hardware and material profile. Finally, choose the smoothest flow block, apply the formula for the mode you used, save the ratio, and calibrate retraction. Each number has a separate purpose; none should be substituted for another.

Keep a calibration record that remains useful

In the filament profile name or notes, include the printer, nozzle, extruder type, material, brand and color, date, test mode, start/end/step values, measured boundary and final conservative setting. Note whether the value is a test ceiling or the everyday value. Photographing the labeled model alongside the notes makes future comparisons faster.

Revisit calibration after changing nozzle diameter, hot end, extruder, firmware behavior, layer-height range, filament formulation or drying practice. OrcaSlicer’s wiki procedures can change as the software evolves, so check the current calibration page when labels or modes differ from the procedure described here.
