First identify the partition’s actual filesystem: “HPFS-NTFS” does not mean it is formatted as both. Linux can mount NTFS with an NTFS driver, while Linux’s HPFS support is read-only. Check the filesystem before choosing a driver or attempting to write.

Identify whether the partition is HPFS or NTFS

HPFS is the OS/2 High Performance Filesystem; NTFS is a separate filesystem. A label or the combined wording “HPFS-NTFS” is not enough to tell which format is on disk. Check the partition’s filesystem type using your Linux disk utility or filesystem-identification tools before mounting it. Substitute the correct device and mount point in any commands; neither is known from the drive’s name alone.

The Linux man-pages description of filesystems(5), book version 6.12 (2024-05-02), says HPFS support is read-only because documentation needed for fuller support is unavailable. The kernel also documents an HPFS driver at Read/Write HPFS 2.09. For an HPFS partition, plan to read files rather than modify them through Linux.

If the partition is NTFS, choose an available driver

Linux has more than one NTFS access path. Which one your system uses depends on its kernel, installed packages, and configuration; do not assume a universal desktop default. Check the mounted filesystem type and your distribution’s available drivers.

SABRENT USB 3.0 to 2.5in SATA Adapter Cable for SSD & HDD, UASP (EC-SSHD)
  • 2.5" SATA Drives Only — SSD & HDD: Compatible with 2.5" SATA I/II/III SSDs and laptop HDDs. NOT compatible with: M.2 NVMe drives, M.2 SATA drives, 3.5" desktop HDDs, or slim SATA optical drives. Verify your drive has a standard 2.5" SATA connector before purchasing.
  • USB Bus-Powered — No Adapter Needed for Most Drives: Powers most 2.5" SATA SSDs and laptop HDDs directly from USB. Note: Some older or high-capacity 2.5" mechanical HDDs may draw more current than a single USB port provides — if a drive fails to spin up, try a powered USB hub or a different USB 3.0 port.
  • USB 3.0 (USB-A) — 5Gbps with UASP: Host connection is USB Type-A (USB-A). Computers with only USB-C ports require a separate USB-C to USB-A adapter (not included). UASP support for faster transfers on compatible systems.
  • Plug & Play: No drivers required; hot-swappable design for quick access to drives on Windows, macOS, and Linux
  • Usage Note: Not intended for all configurations such as system boot drives or certain embedded systems; compatibility may vary by device
Driver Filesystem type Documented behavior What to check
Kernel NTFS3 ntfs3 Linux kernel documentation describes read/write support for normal, sparse, and compressed files, as well as native journal replay. Confirm that your kernel provides the driver and that the mount uses it. See Linux kernel NTFS3 documentation.
ntfs-3g NTFS driver The Ubuntu Noble manual documents read/write operation and a ro option for read-only mounts. Confirm that the package is installed and that this is the driver used on your system. The manual describes Ubuntu Noble’s package, not every distribution’s default. See Ubuntu Noble ntfs-3g manual.

The kernel documentation calls NTFS3 a “fully functional NTFS Read-Write driver.” That describes the driver, not the state or safety of a particular volume. A hibernated or otherwise uncertain Windows volume needs extra care before any read-write attempt.

Mount an NTFS volume cautiously

If you are unsure whether Windows left the volume hibernated or in an unclean state, prefer a read-only mount. For ntfs-3g, the documented option is ro. The exact command depends on your device path, mount point, installed driver, and distribution; verify those locally rather than copying a device name from an example.

SABRENT USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station, 2.5/3.5in (EC-DFLT)
  • SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
  • USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
  • REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
  • 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
  • PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
  1. Identify the NTFS partition and the driver available on your Linux system.
  2. Create or select a mount point that you control, and substitute its path and the correct partition in your mount command.
  3. Use the driver’s read-only option if the volume’s state is uncertain.
  4. After mounting, inspect the actual filesystem type and whether the mount is read-only or read-write before opening files or attempting changes.

The Ubuntu Noble ntfs-3g manual says a hibernated NTFS volume denies read-write mounting and is forced read-only. Its documented choices are to resume Windows and shut it down properly, or use remove_hiberfile. That option removes the hibernation file and completely loses the saved Windows session. Do not use it unless you accept losing that session.

Resolve access problems after mounting

A successful mount does not guarantee that your ordinary Linux user can read or write every file. Ownership and visible permissions are mapped by the driver and its mount options; mounting and user access are separate issues.

  • Check which driver mounted the partition and whether the mount is read-only.
  • Review ownership and mode options before changing permissions. NTFS3 documents uid, gid, umask, fmask, and dmask in its kernel documentation.
  • The Ubuntu Noble ntfs-3g manual also documents user, group, and mask options. Use options appropriate to the driver actually in use rather than assuming the two drivers behave identically.

What to do based on the filesystem

  • HPFS: Linux man-pages describes support as read-only; use Linux to retrieve files, not to make changes to the partition.
  • NTFS, normal state: use an NTFS driver available on your distribution, and confirm the mount type and access mode.
  • NTFS, hibernated or uncertain state: mount read-only, or return to Windows and shut it down properly before trying read-write access. Removing the hibernation file discards the saved session.
  • Mounted but inaccessible to your user: inspect the driver’s ownership and mask settings instead of treating the problem as a filesystem-identification failure.
