Line numbers such as L1 or Pair 1 show where a unit appears in a lineup; they do not, by themselves, confirm who will start, face a particular opponent, or play together in the next game. Check the report’s date and status before treating it as current.
What the lineup labels mean
Forward lines and defense pairs
Forward lines are commonly shown as L1 through L4, with each line listing a center and two wingers. Defensemen are usually grouped separately into Pair 1 through Pair 3. Read the players within each grouping as a unit, and use position labels where provided to identify their expected roles.
For example, a listing of LW — C — RW identifies a left wing, center, and right wing. A defense pairing contains two defensemen; it is not another forward line.
Common abbreviations
- LW: left wing
- C: center
- RW: right wing
- PP1 / PP2: primary and secondary power-play units
- PK: penalty-kill deployment
- G: goalie
How to interpret the order
L1, L2, and similar labels are lineup slots, not a guarantee of opening-faceoff order or a fixed ranking of player quality. Coaches may choose a different opening unit or deploy players differently for a matchup. Pair numbers should be read the same way: they identify the listed grouping, not a promise about a specific assignment or amount of ice time.

Even-strength lines are not special-teams units
Even-strength lines and defense pairs describe one kind of grouping. PP1 and PP2 identify power-play units, while PK identifies penalty-kill deployment. A player’s even-strength line label does not tell you which special-teams unit the player is on. Check those groupings separately when the question is about a power play or penalty kill.
Check whether the lineup is projected, observed, or confirmed
Lineup reports may show forward trios, defense pairs, goalies, scratches, and injuries under a projected-lineup heading. A team’s practice report is a dated snapshot of combinations seen at practice. Neither should automatically be treated as confirmation of the lineup for a later game. NHL.com’s May 8, 2025 projected-lineup example illustrates the report format; the Montréal Canadiens’ September 2026 morning-skate report illustrates a team-published, time-stamped practice snapshot.

- Find the date. A combination reported yesterday may have changed since then.
- Read the status. Note whether the report is projected, based on practice, or explicitly confirmed.
- Separate the units. Read forward trios and defense pairs independently, then check PP and PK groupings if special teams matter.
- Use the report for the right purpose. A projection describes an expected lineup; it is not the same as a record of who actually shared shifts.
Projected combinations versus observed combinations
Some analytics pages derive combinations from players’ overlapping ice time or shifts. That is retrospective evidence of who played together, not a prediction that those players will form a unit in the next game. NHL Fantasy Hub describes its combinations as derived from ice-time overlap. Use a dated lineup or team update for a forward-looking expectation, and an overlap-based page to understand past deployment.
