For the complete Fourth World experience, begin with Jack Kirby’s launch material in Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen, continue through The New Gods, The Forever People and Mister Miracle in publication chronology, and finish with The Hunger Dogs. If you mainly want Scott Free’s story, read Kirby’s complete Mister Miracle collection first, then Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ 12-issue Mister Miracle miniseries.
You do not have to read every Fourth World issue before starting King’s book. The right route depends on whether you want Kirby’s interconnected 1970s sequence, a focused Mister Miracle path, or a shorter introduction through DC’s newer DC Finest: Fourth World: When the Old Gods Die.
Pick the reading route that matches your goal
There are three sensible ways into these comics. The first follows the broad Fourth World publication flow. The second keeps the spotlight on Mister Miracle and moves directly from Jack Kirby to Tom King. The third uses a recent sampler when you want the opening context without committing to every collected volume immediately.
| Route | What you read | Best for | What it does not provide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Complete Kirby chronology | Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen launch material, The New Gods, The Forever People, Mister Miracle, then The Hunger Dogs, following the contents of the omnibus edition in hand | Readers who want the Fourth World as an interconnected project and want the original publication progression preserved | A single uninterrupted Mister Miracle narrative |
| Focused Mister Miracle | Jack Kirby’s complete Mister Miracle run, followed by Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ collected miniseries | Readers primarily interested in Scott Free and a clean handoff to the modern interpretation | The surrounding launch issues and cross-title chronology |
| Opening sampler | DC Finest: Fourth World: When the Old Gods Die | Readers who want foundational opening material in one paperback before choosing a longer route | The complete Kirby Mister Miracle run; it stops at the early issues and related launch stories |
Route A: read the complete Fourth World in Kirby’s publication chronology
Jack Kirby’s Fourth World is not presented as four isolated series. DC’s omnibus configuration arranges material from The New Gods, The Forever People, Mister Miracle and Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen in chronological publication order. That means you should not automatically finish every issue of one title before opening the next. The exact sequence depends on the table of contents in your edition.

1. Start with Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #133–148
These issues contain Kirby’s Fourth World launch material. Read the issues included by the omnibus or collection you own, because different configurations can present the opening material differently. Treat this section as the doorway into the setting rather than as a separate preliminary series.
2. Continue through The New Gods #1–11
The New Gods is one of the four core series represented in the chronological omnibus plan. Keep its issues in the position assigned by your contents page instead of moving all eleven issues to the front of the other titles.
3. Read The Forever People #1–11
The same publication-order principle applies here. The series belongs alongside The New Gods, Mister Miracle and the Jimmy Olsen material, so use the interleaving shown in your edition whenever it is provided.

Kirby’s complete Mister Miracle run is eighteen issues. In the full Fourth World route, place those issues where the omnibus contents place them rather than treating the title as an afterthought. This preserves the sequence in which the four series originally appeared.
5. Finish with The Hunger Dogs
The Hunger Dogs, identified as DC Graphic Novel #4, serves as the concluding Kirby Fourth World graphic novel in the later omnibus configuration. Read it after the serialized material and before moving to any later creator’s interpretation.

How to use an omnibus contents page
Open the contents page before you begin and mark the issue ranges in reading order. A representative section from Jack Kirby’s Fourth World Omnibus Vol. 2 pairs:
- The New Gods #4–6
- The Forever People #4–6
- Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #141–145
- Mister Miracle #4–6
That grouping demonstrates the intended method: follow the volume’s sequence, not a rule that says “finish one title, then start the next.” If your edition’s contents differ, your edition’s printed order is the authority for that particular omnibus.

If your priority is Scott Free’s own story, use the focused route. It gives you Kirby’s full series in one stand-alone color collection and then moves directly to the modern miniseries.
- Read Jack Kirby’s Mister Miracle #1–18. The focused collection gathers the entire Kirby run rather than a selected opening arc.
- Move to Mister Miracle (2017) #1–12 by Tom King and Mitch Gerads. Read all twelve issues in order as the collected miniseries.
This route omits the surrounding New Gods, Forever People and Jimmy Olsen issues, so it is not a substitute for the full Fourth World chronology. It is the efficient choice when your question is specifically “How do I read Mister Miracle?” rather than “How do I read all of Kirby’s Fourth World?”
Do you need to read all of Kirby’s Fourth World before Tom King?
No. King’s book is collected as a twelve-issue miniseries and can be approached as a modern standalone interpretation. You can begin it after Kirby’s focused Mister Miracle collection without first completing every issue of the other three Fourth World series.

Reading more Kirby first still changes the experience. The complete chronology shows how Mister Miracle sits inside the larger Fourth World design, while the focused route gives you the character’s own series without requiring the cross-title material. Choose based on the kind of context you want, not on a requirement that does not exist.
| If you want… | Read this first | Then read |
|---|---|---|
| The broadest Kirby context | The complete chronological Fourth World sequence | King and Gerads’ miniseries afterward |
| Scott Free’s original series with minimal detours | Kirby’s focused Mister Miracle collection | King and Gerads immediately afterward |
| A quick introduction before committing to a full run | DC Finest: Fourth World: When the Old Gods Die | Either the complete chronology or the focused Kirby volume |
What the focused Kirby collection contains
DC’s focused edition is a stand-alone color volume collecting the complete Kirby series. It is 448 pages and was released on September 20, 2017. Because it is self-contained, it is the most straightforward purchase for a reader who wants to begin with Mister Miracle rather than assemble the Fourth World title by title.
The collection’s scope matters: it covers Kirby’s Mister Miracle issues, not every Fourth World appearance or every launch issue from the other books. If you later decide to read the complete chronology, you will still need an edition that includes the other series and the Jimmy Olsen material.
Where Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ miniseries fits
Mister Miracle (2017) #1–12 is a later, collected miniseries by Tom King and Mitch Gerads. Its collection was released on February 13, 2019. Place it after whichever Kirby route you choose; doing so lets you encounter Kirby’s original series before King and Gerads’ modern interpretation.
The miniseries is not an extra chapter that must be inserted between Kirby issues. It is a separate twelve-issue work, so keep the complete Kirby sequence intact and start the 2017 series only after finishing that route.

Optional entry point: DC Finest: Fourth World: When the Old Gods Die
DC Finest: Fourth World: When the Old Gods Die is a 560-page paperback published by DC Comics on June 23, 2026 (ISBN 9781799508311). It gathers foundational opening material from several titles:
- Mister Miracle #1–4
- The New Gods #1–4
- The Forever People #1–5
- Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #133–139 and #141
- Superman’s Girl Friend, Lois Lane #111 and #115, plus pages from #114
This paperback is useful when you want the launch context in one book. It is not the complete Kirby Mister Miracle collection: it includes only issues #1–4 of that title, along with related early material. After finishing it, continue with the rest of Kirby’s run or switch to the full chronological omnibus route.

How to plan your reading session
- Identify your edition. Check whether you own a focused Mister Miracle volume, a Fourth World omnibus, or the 2026 DC Finest paperback.
- Write down the scope. Note which issue ranges are actually included; a sampler and a complete collection are not interchangeable.
- Follow printed order for omnibus books. Use the table of contents to interleave titles where the edition does so.
- Keep the two Mister Miracle series separate. Finish Kirby’s run before opening King and Gerads’ 2017 miniseries.
- Record your stopping point. If you begin with DC Finest, mark that it ends at the early issues so you do not assume you have completed Kirby’s series.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Reading only the modern miniseries and calling it the full story
King and Gerads’ collection is a complete twelve-issue miniseries, but it does not replace Kirby’s eighteen-issue run or the broader Fourth World chronology. Treat it as its own reading phase.
Assuming every collection has the same contents
The focused Kirby volume, a chronological omnibus and DC Finest serve different purposes. Compare issue lists before buying or borrowing so you know whether you are getting the whole series, selected opening chapters or the interleaved universe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReading omnibus titles in blocks
Grouping all of The New Gods, then all of The Forever People, and so on loses the publication flow the omnibus is designed to preserve. Use the contents page, including the demonstrated Vol. 2 pattern, as your guide.

Starting with DC Finest and stopping too soon
The 2026 paperback is an opening sampler. Its four Mister Miracle issues are only the beginning of Kirby’s complete run, so plan a follow-up collection if you want the full series.
Availability and purchasing considerations
Availability and pricing can change by retailer, format and region. Check the publication details and the issue list for the edition currently offered rather than assuming that an older listing describes a newer printing. The most important practical distinction is scope: a 448-page focused color collection, a multi-title omnibus and a 560-page sampler answer different reading needs.
If you are buying digitally or second-hand, verify that the listing identifies the same issue range and edition you intend to read. For the chronological route, confirm that the volume includes the interleaved Fourth World material and, where applicable, The Hunger Dogs.

A simple recommendation
For most first-time readers who specifically searched for Mister Miracle, choose the focused Kirby collection, read all eighteen issues, and then read King and Gerads’ twelve-issue miniseries. Choose the omnibus chronology instead when the appeal is Kirby’s entire Fourth World architecture. Use DC Finest: Fourth World: When the Old Gods Die when you want a substantial but introductory sample before committing to either complete route.
