To read a DAX daily percentage, compare the current DAX level with the previous official session close: ((current level − previous close) ÷ previous close) × 100. A quoted DAX is usually the performance index, which assumes dividends and bonus payments are reinvested. Before interpreting any number, check the index variant, timestamp, reference close and whether the quote is an intraday tick or a completed session return.
What the DAX daily percentage change measures
The daily percentage tells you how far the DAX level has moved relative to the previous trading session’s close. It is a relative change, not a count of index points and not automatically the return earned by an individual investor.
Use this calculation:
Daily change (%) = ((Current DAX level − Previous close) ÷ Previous close) × 100

((18,360 − 18,000) ÷ 18,000) × 100 = 2.0%
The index is therefore up 2.0% compared with the previous close. If the current level were 17,640, the result would be ((17,640 − 18,000) ÷ 18,000) × 100 = −2.0%, meaning the index is down 2.0%.
Market screens may label the same calculation “change,” “% change,” “since previous close” or “daily performance.” Confirm the wording. A number beside a live quote can change every second and is an intraday change, not a final daily return. A completed daily return requires the official session close as the current value.
Identify which DAX series you are reading
“The DAX” is not one universal calculation. Deutsche Börse publishes performance, price and net-return variants. Two charts can show different percentage histories while both are correctly labelled DAX if they use different variants.

The performance index can rise more than a price index over a long period because reinvested distributions compound. That does not mean the underlying shares had a higher cash price return. Before comparing charts, record the exact label used by the data provider, including “performance,” “price” or “net return.”
Net-return calculations use methodology assumptions rather than the personal tax position of every investor. A fund domiciled in another country, an individual account and a tax-exempt institution can all experience different withholding outcomes.
What the DAX represents
The DAX tracks 40 of the largest and highest-turnover German stocks, selected and weighted using market-capitalisation rules. Deutsche Börse has calculated the benchmark since 1 July 1988. The provider says the index represents approximately 80% of the market capitalisation of listed stock corporations in Germany and approximately 90% of stock-market turnover in German shares.

Those coverage figures describe the benchmark’s representation of the German listed-equity market; they do not mean every German company is included or that every investor holds the same companies. Constituents can change as eligibility and ranking rules are applied, so a historical DAX result is not a fixed basket of today’s 40 names.
The index is derived from prices traded on Xetra. Its level is an index-point value, not a euro price for a share and not the value of a portfolio you can buy directly.
Why some German shares move the DAX more than others
DAX-family indices are weighted by free-float market capitalisation. In practical terms, a company’s influence depends on the market value of the shares available for public trading, after applying the relevant free-float factor. A company with a large eligible free-float value receives a larger index weight than a smaller company.
As a result, a 1% move in a high-weight constituent can affect the DAX more than a 1% move in a low-weight constituent. The DAX can rise while many smaller constituents fall if a few heavily weighted shares gain enough to outweigh them. Conversely, a sharp decline in a large constituent can pull the index down even when most members are little changed.
The calculation follows a Laspeyres-style index formula. It uses constituent prices, free-float factors, share quantities, adjustment factors and a chaining factor. Corporate actions and changes in the basket are handled through adjustment mechanisms so that an event such as a replacement or a split does not create a meaningless jump solely because the index was reconstituted.

When a DAX quote is calculated
Deutsche Börse states that the DAX is calculated and updated every second from Xetra prices during the session. The official calculation begins when opening prices for all components are available, or by 09:06 at the latest. The last DAX tick is disseminated at 18:00, according to the current explainer.
- Before the first valid calculation: a provider may show the previous close, an indicative value or no current percentage.
- During the session: every new eligible price can change the index level and the “since previous close” percentage.
- At the final dissemination: the last official tick provides the session reference used for a completed daily comparison.
Check the timestamp and exchange calendar when reading a quote. A weekend, holiday or shortened session can make the previous available close differ from the date you expected. A delayed data feed can also display an older level while another service shows a newer one.
How to read a DAX display step by step
- Read the full instrument name. Look for DAX performance index, DAX price index or a net-return designation. If the screen only says “DAX,” verify the provider’s definition before making a long-term comparison.
- Record the timestamp. Note the date, time and whether prices are real time, delayed or end of day. A live timestamp indicates a changing intraday observation.
- Find the reference value. For a daily percentage, identify the previous official session close. Do not substitute yesterday’s level if yesterday was a market holiday or if the display is comparing with a different period.
- Check the time basis. Distinguish “since previous close” from today’s opening move, week-to-date, month-to-date and year-to-date. These use different starting values.
- Read both points and percentage. The point change is current level minus previous close. The percentage divides that point change by the previous close, so the same number of points produces different percentages at different index levels.
- Recalculate when the number matters. Apply
((current − previous close) ÷ previous close) × 100and allow for the provider’s rounding. A display rounded to two decimals can differ slightly from your calculation using rounded index points. - Decide whether you need a benchmark or an investable return. For a fund or ETF, retrieve its own price, total-return data, fees, distribution policy, currency and trading time rather than copying the DAX percentage.
Comparing two DAX readings without mixing unlike numbers
Before saying that one DAX result is “better” or “worse,” align the comparison across the following dimensions.

For example, a performance-index chart and a price-index chart should not be overlaid and described as if they measured the same return. Likewise, comparing a live DAX percentage with an ETF’s closing percentage can mix different timestamps.
Why your German shares may not match the DAX
Different constituent weights
Your portfolio may own companies that have small DAX weights or are not constituents at all. Their individual moves can differ substantially from the weighted benchmark.
Dividends and distributions
A performance DAX assumes dividend and bonus income is reinvested. A price-only share quote, a price index and a fund that pays cash distributions do not present that income in the same way or on the same date.

Fees and tracking difference
An index-linked fund deducts management and operating costs. Trading expenses, sampling, cash holdings and rebalancing can create tracking difference, so the fund’s net return can be below or occasionally above the index over a particular interval.
Taxes
The DAX’s net-return variant uses a stated withholding-tax assumption. Your account may face different withholding, reclaim or capital-gains treatment. A personal after-tax return therefore cannot be inferred from a headline DAX figure.
Currency
The DAX is quoted in index points associated with the German market. If you measure an investment in a different currency, exchange-rate movements affect your result even when the index itself is unchanged.
Trading timing
An ETF trades continuously and has its own bid and ask prices. Its last trade may occur before or after the index’s final dissemination, and spreads can widen during volatile periods. A purchase made at a different time will not receive the session’s closing level.

Positive intraday move
The previous official close is 18,000 and the live DAX is 18,360 at 14:30. The display should show approximately +2.00% since the previous close. Because the quote is still moving, call this an intraday gain, not the final daily return.

If the previous close is 20,000 and the current level is 19,600, the point change is −400 and the percentage is −2.00%. The sign comes from the direction of the difference; the denominator is always the selected reference close.

Same points, different percentages
A 360-point rise from 18,000 equals 2.00%, while a 360-point rise from 12,000 equals 3.00%. Point changes alone are not comparable across periods with different index levels.
Index up while a portfolio is down
Suppose high-weight constituents rise and lift the DAX, while the smaller companies held in your account fall. The benchmark can show a positive percentage at the same time as your portfolio shows a loss. That is a difference in exposure, not necessarily an error in either number.
How to interpret an unusually large daily move
A large percentage should first be checked for definition and timing. Confirm that the display uses the same performance or price variant as your comparison, that the reference is the previous official close and that the quote is not an early indicative value or a stale feed.

That historical figure is a completed daily move, not a normal expectation for an intraday quote. An extreme result can reflect broad market repricing, but the percentage alone does not identify the cause; consult contemporaneous market reporting if you need an event explanation.
Common reading mistakes and fixes
- Calling an intraday number the final return: label it “since previous close” until the official session close is available.
- Assuming “DAX” always means price return: verify whether the provider uses the performance index, which is generally the commonly quoted series.
- Comparing points instead of percentages: divide by the correct reference close.
- Treating the 40 constituents as equally weighted: use free-float market-capitalisation weighting when explaining the index’s movement.
- Using the DAX percentage as an ETF return: subtract or otherwise account for fees, tracking difference, taxes, distributions, currency and execution timing.
- Ignoring data delays: compare timestamps and feed status before concluding that two services disagree.
- Comparing unlike variants: put performance, price and net-return labels side by side before drawing a trend conclusion.
A compact checklist for any DAX percentage
- Which series is it: performance, price or net return?
- What is the timestamp and is the feed live, delayed or end of day?
- Is the percentage measured from the previous official close?
- Is the displayed value an intraday tick or a completed session close?
- Are you looking at index points or an investable product’s traded price?
- Could constituent weights, dividends, fees, taxes, currency or trading timing explain a difference?
Once those checks are complete, the number has a precise meaning: the percentage change of the named DAX series from its stated reference value. It remains a benchmark statistic, while the return in an individual account depends on the instrument and circumstances used to obtain exposure.
