Read Bird Construction’s earnings materials in a fixed order: start with the quarterly release, verify the numbers in the financial statements, use the MD&A for explanations and definitions, then test management’s narrative against the presentation and call transcript. The key discipline is to separate reported IFRS results from adjusted measures, contracted Backlog from Pending Backlog, and current results from forward-looking expectations.

For the latest available example, Bird reported C$1,043.3 million of construction revenue in Q2 2026, up 22.6% year over year, while ending the quarter with more than C$6.1 billion of contracted Backlog and C$6.0 billion of Pending Backlog. Those figures are useful only when read alongside margin, cash flow, project timing and the assumptions management gives for converting awards into revenue.

Start with Bird’s investor-relations document set

Bird Construction’s investor-relations page is the canonical index for its quarterly releases, financial statements, management’s discussion and analysis (MD&A), earnings-call presentations, recordings and annual filings. Use that index rather than relying on an isolated transcript or a headline copied by a third party. The page lets you confirm the reporting period, document date and whether a figure comes from a filed statement, a release or management commentary.

What each document contributes

  • Earnings press release: the fastest view of the quarter. Capture the period, headline revenue and earnings changes, backlog, major awards, the chief executive’s quote and any outlook language.
  • Financial statements: the authority for revenue, gross profit, operating income, net income, earnings per share, cash flow, debt and working-capital movements. Check both the reported period and its comparative period.
  • MD&A: the explanation layer. It normally discusses project timing, mix, margins, seasonality, segment performance, liquidity, risks and Bird’s definitions of Backlog, Pending Backlog and adjusted measures.
  • Earnings-call presentation: a record of the metrics management chose to emphasize and how it framed the strategic story.
  • Call recording or transcript: the place to test explanations. Search for changes in timing, customer or project concentration, margin assumptions, backlog conversion, capital allocation and analyst challenges.
  • Annual report and annual information form: the full-year baseline for the business model, contractual and market context, governance, risk factors and recurring disclosures.

Transcript services such as Quartr and StockAnalysis can make a call searchable, but use them as navigation aids. Reconcile every important statement to Bird’s own release, filing or presentation.

Use a six-pass reading sequence

1. Establish the period and the comparison

Write down the exact quarter or year, the publication date and the comparison basis. A quarter-over-quarter comparison answers a different question from a year-over-year comparison. Construction revenue is seasonal and project timing can shift between quarters, so do not compare a March quarter with a June quarter and call the difference an underlying trend without qualification.

2. Capture the release’s headline claims

Record revenue, growth rate, profitability language, backlog, major awards and the management quote. Mark whether growth is described as organic, acquired or a combination. In Q2 2026, Bird said construction revenue was C$1,043.3 million, 22.6% above the prior-year quarter, with more than 80% of the increase organic. That is a growth claim; it is not yet a cash-conversion or margin conclusion.

3. Verify every headline in the statements

Check the income statement for revenue, gross profit, operating income, net income and basic or diluted EPS. Then move to the cash-flow statement and balance sheet. Look for operating cash flow, investment in non-cash working capital, debt, cash and changes in receivables, contract assets, payables and other working-capital accounts. If the release uses an adjusted figure, find the reconciliation before using it.

4. Read the MD&A for causes, not just results

Use the MD&A to identify whether a change came from project starts, completions, weather, customer timing, mix, productivity, claims, pricing, acquisitions or another stated factor. Note which segment produced the change: Buildings, Industrial, Infrastructure or maintenance activity where Bird discloses it. Also copy the definitions and timing language for Backlog and Pending Backlog; the labels are not interchangeable.

5. Mark the presentation’s chosen indicators

Management’s slide selection reveals which measures it wants investors to watch. Compare the presentation’s emphasis with the filing. If the slides lead with adjusted EBITDA while the statements show a different movement in IFRS profit or operating cash flow, investigate the bridge rather than choosing the more flattering number.

6. Use the transcript to challenge the narrative

Read the prepared remarks, then the question-and-answer section. Search for backlog, margin, cash flow, working capital, timing, conversion, guidance, maintenance, Buildings, Industrial and Infrastructure. For each management claim, write the matching reported figure, period, document and assumption. Give extra weight to analyst questions that force clarification of project timing, margin risk, liquidity or backlog conversion.

Separate the measures that answer different questions

Revenue and organic growth

Revenue measures work recognized in the period, not the value of every project Bird has won. Record the reported growth rate and, when disclosed, the organic portion. Organic growth is useful because it indicates how much expansion came from existing operations rather than acquisitions, but it does not by itself show whether margins or cash generation improved.

IFRS profitability first

Begin with gross profit, operating income, net income and EPS as reported under IFRS. These figures provide the accounting baseline for comparing the company across periods. Then identify the operational explanation: project mix, execution, timing, overhead, financing or tax effects.

Adjusted measures require Bird’s definition

Bird uses measures including Adjusted Earnings, Adjusted EBITDA, Adjusted EBITDA Margin and Adjusted EPS. Bird states that these are non-GAAP measures or ratios, are not standardized under IFRS and may not be comparable with similarly named measures at other companies. Read the reconciliation and list every adjustment before drawing a trend line. An improvement in Adjusted EBITDA Margin is not a substitute for checking IFRS operating income, net income and cash flow.

Cash conversion

Compare operating cash flow with reported earnings and inspect the working-capital movement. Bird’s Q1 2026 release reported C$39.7 million of operating cash flow before investments in non-cash working capital. The qualification matters: cash flow before that working-capital investment is not the same as total operating cash flow. To assess conversion, identify how much cash was absorbed or released by receivables, contract assets, payables and other non-cash working-capital items, then compare the result with net income and the period’s project activity.

How Backlog and Pending Backlog work

Contracted Backlog

Backlog is contracted work expected to be performed and recognized as revenue over time. Track the opening balance, new awards, work executed, transfers or conversions from Pending Backlog and the closing contracted balance. A large closing balance supports future revenue visibility, but it does not guarantee a particular quarter’s revenue or margin. Timing, execution and contract economics still matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pending Backlog

Pending Backlog is work awarded but not yet contracted. Treat it as an indicator of potential future activity with greater conversion uncertainty than contracted Backlog. Record the expected conversion timing and the portion tied to master service agreements or recurring work. A high Pending Backlog can signal a strong opportunity set, but it should not be valued as if it were signed work.

Use additions and execution together

Backlog quality is clearer when additions are compared with work executed. In Q1 2026, Bird said backlog additions exceeded work executed by C$295.2 million, or 37.7%, as reported in the company’s release. That relationship indicates that new work more than replenished the amount recognized during the quarter; it does not tell you whether every award has the same margin, duration or cancellation risk.

Read the Q1-to-Q2 movement

Metric Q1 2026 Q2 2026 How to use it
Construction revenue C$783.4 million, up 9.2% year over year C$1,043.3 million, up 22.6% year over year Shows reported activity recognized in each quarter; compare on the same year-over-year basis.
Contracted Backlog, period end C$5.4 billion at March 31, 2026 More than C$6.1 billion at June 30, 2026 Indicates contracted future work; examine additions, execution and conversion timing.
Pending Backlog, period end C$5.6 billion at March 31, 2026 C$6.0 billion at June 30, 2026 Indicates awarded but uncontracted potential; apply more uncertainty than to contracted Backlog.
Operating cash flow detail C$39.7 million before investments in non-cash working capital Not stated in the cited Q2 figures Use the statement and MD&A to determine total cash flow and the working-capital effect.

The table is not a forecast. It is a period snapshot. To explain why contracted Backlog rose from C$5.4 billion at March 31 to more than C$6.1 billion at June 30, read the quarter’s award, conversion and execution disclosures rather than attributing the entire change to one cause.

What Q2 2026 tells you—and what it does not

Q2 2026 provides three useful signals. First, reported construction revenue reached C$1,043.3 million and grew 22.6% year over year. Second, Bird said more than 80% of that growth was organic, which makes the growth composition clearer. Third, period-end contracted Backlog exceeded C$6.1 billion and Pending Backlog was C$6.0 billion. Together, these figures show a larger activity base and substantial future work opportunities.

They do not, on their own, establish sustainable margin expansion, full-year cash generation or the exact quarter in which Pending Backlog will become revenue. To answer those questions, inspect IFRS profit measures, adjusted reconciliations, operating cash flow, working-capital movements and management’s stated conversion assumptions.

How to read a call transcript critically

Build a claim-to-number worksheet

Create one row for every material claim and use these columns: management statement; metric; period; source document; reported value; assumption; risk or qualifier; next period to verify. For example, a statement about stronger backlog conversion should be tied to the contracted Backlog balance, the amount of work executed, the expected timing and the subsequent quarter’s recognized revenue.

Distinguish fact, interpretation and forecast

  • Fact: a number already reported in a statement or release, such as Q2 2026 construction revenue of C$1,043.3 million.
  • Interpretation: management’s explanation for a result, such as project timing or mix.
  • Forecast: an expectation about growth, profitability, cash flow, EPS, adjusted EBITDA or backlog conversion.

Do not convert an interpretation into a fact, and do not treat a forecast as a result. Record the date and assumptions so you can test the statement against the next filing.

Use analyst questions as stress tests

Prepared remarks are usually selective. Questions often reveal where investors see uncertainty. Pay particular attention when an analyst asks about delayed starts, margin pressure, cash tied up in working capital, customer concentration, liquidity, maintenance volumes or the timing of Pending Backlog conversion. A precise answer that identifies a period, amount and assumption is more useful than a broad assurance.

Listen for changes in language

Compare the current call with the prior call. Words such as “expected,” “on track,” “progressing,” “timing,” “opportunity” and “conversion” can shift in meaning even when the headline outlook is unchanged. Note whether management narrows, broadens or defers a timing expectation, and then check whether the reported backlog and cash data support that change.

Test revenue growth against profit and cash

A three-part conversion check

  1. Revenue: record reported and organic growth for the same period.
  2. Profit: compare IFRS gross profit, operating income, net income and EPS before reviewing Adjusted EBITDA, Adjusted EBITDA Margin, Adjusted Earnings or Adjusted EPS.
  3. Cash: compare operating cash flow with earnings and isolate the effect of non-cash working capital.

If revenue rises while cash falls, investigate receivables, contract assets, project billing, payables and the timing of work executed. If adjusted margin rises while IFRS profit does not, read the reconciliation and determine whether the difference is recurring or one-time. If Backlog rises without a corresponding improvement in cash, ask whether the work requires significant mobilization or working-capital investment before billing.

Keep seasonality and timing in view

Construction revenue can move when projects start, reach milestones or finish. A weak quarter may reflect timing rather than a permanent loss of demand, while a strong quarter may include work pulled forward. Use the MD&A and transcript to identify the stated timing factor, then check whether the following period confirms it.

Compare quarters and years on a consistent framework

Use the same worksheet for every period. Record these fields:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Revenue growth, with reported and organic growth separated where disclosed.
  • IFRS profitability, followed by adjusted measures using Bird’s own definitions.
  • Operating cash flow and the specific working-capital movements that changed cash.
  • Opening contracted Backlog, awards, Pending Backlog conversions, work executed and closing contracted Backlog.
  • Pending Backlog amount, expected conversion timing and the share associated with master service agreements or recurring work.
  • Segment or market mix across Buildings, Industrial, Infrastructure and maintenance activity where disclosed.
  • Prior outlook versus delivered results in the next reported period.

When comparing Bird with another contractor, normalize accounting definitions before comparing percentages. Then compare backlog quality, contract structure, self-perform exposure, cash conversion and balance-sheet capacity. A larger backlog is not automatically better if it has lower certainty, thinner margins or heavier working-capital requirements.

Handle forward-looking statements correctly

Bird’s forward-looking statements about growth, profitability, cash flow, EPS, adjusted EBITDA and backlog conversion are expectations, not historical results. The 2025 year-end release described the company as having navigated near-term revenue timing shifts while progressing margins and strengthening the business; that language should be tested against later reported periods rather than treated as proof of an outcome.

For every outlook statement, record:

  • the exact metric being forecast;
  • the period or timing window;
  • the assumptions management names;
  • the risks and uncertainties in the release or MD&A; and
  • the later reported figure that will confirm, miss or partially meet the expectation.

Bird’s Q1 2026 release quoted President and CEO Teri McKibbon saying: “Bird delivered a strong start to 2026, with organic revenue growth, stable margins and solid cash flow that reflect the resilience of our diversified One Bird platform.” Treat “strong,” “stable” and “solid” as management characterization; verify each with the numerical statements and cash-flow details.

Common reading errors and how to avoid them

Counting Pending Backlog as signed revenue

Pending Backlog has not yet become contracted work. Keep it in a separate column and apply a higher uncertainty level until the contract is executed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using adjusted EBITDA without the bridge

Adjusted measures can aid trend analysis, but Bird warns that they lack standardized IFRS meanings and may not be comparable with other companies’ similarly named measures. Always read the reconciliation and retain IFRS figures beside it.

Confusing backlog growth with immediate revenue

Backlog is performed and recognized over time. A large award can increase visibility while contributing little revenue in the current quarter. Ask about start dates, milestones, duration and expected conversion.

Ignoring working capital

Operating cash flow can diverge from earnings because project receivables, contract assets and payables move at different times. Q1 2026’s C$39.7 million figure was specifically before investments in non-cash working capital, so it cannot be used as a synonym for total operating cash flow.

Comparing mismatched periods

Use year-over-year comparisons for seasonal context and quarter-over-quarter comparisons for sequential momentum, but label which one you are using. Do not infer an annual trend from a single sequential change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quoting a forecast as a delivered result

Mark every expectation as forward-looking and return to the next release to test it. Keep the original assumption beside the later outcome so timing changes are visible.

A practical one-page checklist

  1. Confirm the quarter, fiscal year and comparison period.
  2. Copy revenue, IFRS profit measures, EPS, cash flow, debt and working-capital movements from the statements.
  3. Record reported growth and organic growth separately.
  4. Record opening and closing contracted Backlog, awards, work executed and Pending Backlog conversion.
  5. Keep Pending Backlog in a separate line and note its expected timing and master-service or recurring-work component.
  6. Read the MD&A for project timing, mix, margins, seasonality, segment performance, liquidity and risk.
  7. Read the presentation for management’s selected indicators.
  8. Search the transcript using the key terms and log each material claim with its number and assumption.
  9. Compare adjusted measures with their Bird-defined reconciliations and the IFRS baseline.
  10. Carry every forward-looking statement into the next-period review and mark whether the expectation was met.
