Read an ASML earnings report in this order: reported sales and profit, bookings, backlog, gross margin, then current and full-year guidance. The sequence separates demand for future systems from revenue already recognized and shows whether management’s outlook is improving or weakening. For the latest available release, covering the quarter ended September 27, 2026, that process starts with €11.662 billion of sales, a 57.5% gross margin and €4.960 billion of net income.
ASML’s figures are reported primarily under US GAAP. The Q3 2026 balance sheet and statements for the quarter and first nine months were unaudited, so treat them as quarterly reporting rather than a substitute for the audited annual report.
Start with the complete ASML results package
Use ASML’s investor-relations quarterly-results hub rather than relying on a headline or a stock-market summary. The package normally includes the earnings release, financial statements, presentation, prepared remarks and a video transcript. The latest release listed at the October 14, 2026 research date was Q3 2026.

Read the release first for the numbers and guidance, then use the statements to verify definitions and the presentation or transcript to understand management’s explanation. Keep the quarter, year-to-date period and comparable prior periods separate. A quarterly number can look unusually strong or weak because of shipment timing, product mix or a one-time item.

Check the accounting basis and reporting status
- ASML’s quarterly earnings releases and annual reports primarily use US GAAP.
- The Q3 2026 quarter ended September 27, 2026, and the balance sheet and statements for the quarter and nine months were unaudited.
- Compare at least four quarters when the full results package is available; one quarter is not enough to establish a trend.
1. Read the headline income statement before interpreting demand
First record total net sales, gross profit, gross margin, net income and basic earnings per share. Then compare each item with the preceding quarter and with the guidance issued in the prior report. This tells you what ASML actually delivered before you assess what it may deliver next.

Q3 sales were toward the high end of the company’s guidance. Christophe Fouquet, ASML’s president and chief executive officer, described the quarter as record total net sales of €11.7 billion and attributed the result to strong execution of the ramp-up. That statement explains management’s framing; the table above is the precise reported figure to use in calculations.
Separate revenue from orders
Sales are recognized when ASML meets the accounting conditions for delivery and revenue recognition. A customer can place an order in one quarter, receive a system in another and generate service or upgrade revenue over a much longer period. Therefore, a sales increase does not automatically mean that new demand increased in the same quarter, and a sales decline does not automatically mean orders collapsed.

ASML defines net bookings as “all system sales orders and inflation-related adjustments, for which written authorizations have been accepted.” Bookings are order intake: they measure commitments accepted by ASML, not revenue recognized from shipments.

An accepted order can precede manufacturing, installation, customer acceptance and accounting recognition. Bookings can therefore be higher than quarterly sales during a demand surge, or lower than sales when ASML is delivering orders accepted earlier.
Use both total bookings and the EUV component
The mix of orders matters because extreme ultraviolet (EUV) systems have different economics, lead times and strategic importance from other system categories. Where ASML discloses an EUV subtotal, record it beside total bookings rather than treating total order intake as a single undifferentiated number.

The Q4 figure is an order-intake measure, not a promise that the same amount will appear as Q4 revenue. For a multi-quarter analysis, calculate whether bookings are accelerating, stable or slowing, then compare that direction with backlog and recognized sales.
Questions to ask after a bookings number
- Was the total above, near or below the company’s previous expectation?
- What share came from EUV, and how did the mix differ from the prior quarter?
- Were orders concentrated among a small number of customers or products?
- Could timing, customer push-outs or written-authority timing have shifted orders between quarters?
- Do production slots and supply-chain capacity allow the orders to become shipments on the expected schedule?
3. Treat backlog as visibility, not guaranteed revenue
ASML defines backlog as “accumulated sales values for all system sales orders and inflation-related adjustments, for which written authorizations have been accepted, and not yet recorded in total net sales.” In practical terms, backlog is accepted work that has not yet become recognized sales.

Backlog can improve visibility into future revenue, but it is not a guaranteed revenue schedule. The amount eventually recognized depends on delivery timing, installation and acceptance, product configuration, customer readiness, export permissions, manufacturing capacity and the possibility of cancellation or postponement.
Build a backlog-conversion view
- Record the reported backlog. Use the period-end figure and note whether it is a system value, a total including inflation-related adjustments, or another disclosed measure.
- Compare it with bookings. Rising backlog alongside strong bookings suggests orders are entering faster than they are being recognized as sales; falling backlog may indicate strong shipment conversion or weaker intake.
- Check the expected timing. Look for management comments on near-term versus later delivery and for constraints affecting installation or customer acceptance.
- Test cancellation and push-out risk. Read the risk language for order timing, cancellations, customer demand and export controls.
- Adjust for mix. A backlog dominated by complex, high-value systems may convert differently from a backlog containing more service, upgrades or other offerings.
ASML’s Q3 2026 risk discussion specifically identified order timing, backlog realization, cancellations, export controls, customer demand and supply-chain capacity. Those items determine how much confidence to place in a headline backlog number.
4. Read gross margin through mix, not as a permanent run rate
Gross margin is gross profit divided by total net sales. For Q3 2026, €6.700 billion of gross profit divided by €11.662 billion of sales produced a 57.5% gross margin. The prior quarter’s margin was 54.0%, so the important follow-up is why the mix or costs changed.

Look for the operating explanation
ASML reported Installed Base Management sales of €3.3 billion in Q3 2026. Installed Base Management sales equal net service and field-option sales. The company said continued demand for productivity upgrades helped drive margin above guidance. Services and upgrades can affect margin differently from new-system shipments, while EUV and DUV mix, shipment timing, manufacturing costs and one-off items can also move the percentage.

- Product mix: Identify whether EUV, DUV or other systems made up more of recognized sales.
- Service and upgrade mix: Check Installed Base Management sales and whether productivity upgrades were unusually strong.
- Timing: A quarter with a favorable shipment or acceptance mix may not represent a sustainable run rate.
- Costs: Consider manufacturing efficiency, component costs, capacity utilization and any disclosed one-time effects.
- Guidance comparison: Determine whether the reported margin beat, met or missed the prior guide before interpreting the result as an execution improvement.
Do not annualize one high-margin quarter without checking at least several quarters of mix and management’s stated assumptions.
5. Interpret guidance as a range with explicit assumptions
Guidance is management’s current expectation, not a guarantee. Read the low end, high end and implied margin together, then compare the new ranges with the previous release.

Compare the new guide with the old one
- Copy the prior quarter’s Q4 and full-year ranges into your worksheet.
- Compare both the midpoint and the width of each range. A higher midpoint is an upgrade; a wider range signals more uncertainty even if the midpoint rises.
- Compare expected gross margin separately from sales. Revenue can rise while margin falls if mix or costs deteriorate.
- Check whether R&D and SG&A spending changes alter the likely operating-profit outcome.
- Read the assumptions and risk section before deciding that a guide change represents stronger underlying demand.
Management said customers continue to increase their short- and medium-term equipment-demand forecasts, driven primarily by views on the size and duration of AI-related investments. That is an explanation of the demand assumption, not an assurance that AI spending will persist at the same pace.

Use the same period basis throughout. Do not compare a quarterly bookings figure with a full-year sales figure and call the difference a growth rate.
7. Why ASML’s stock can move sharply after earnings
Market reaction reflects the gap between expectations and the complete information set, not simply whether net income increased. Investors typically reassess five linked signals:
- Reported performance: Sales, margin, net income and EPS show what happened.
- Order intake: Bookings indicate whether customers are committing to future capacity.
- Visibility: Backlog provides potential future revenue but must be discounted for timing and cancellation risks.
- Profit quality: Mix, service and upgrade sales explain whether margin is repeatable.
- Outlook: New ranges and assumptions determine how the next quarters are valued.
A quarter can beat sales expectations yet trigger a negative reaction if bookings weaken, backlog conversion is delayed, margin guidance falls or export-control risks increase. Conversely, a modest current-quarter result can be received positively when bookings, backlog quality and forward guidance improve. The relevant comparison is the release against the expectations already embedded in the share price, not the release in isolation.
8. Read the risk section as part of the numbers
ASML identifies risks involving semiconductor demand, the durability of AI investment, production and supply-chain capacity, order timing, cancellations or push-outs, export controls, geopolitics, currency, taxes, and the performance and adoption of new systems. These are not generic footnotes: each one can affect a specific line in your worksheet.
- Demand risk: Weak chip demand can reduce new orders and delay customer acceptance.
- AI-investment risk: If customers revise the size or duration of AI spending, bookings and guidance assumptions may change.
- Capacity risk: Limited manufacturing, components or installation resources can delay conversion of backlog into sales.
- Export-control and geopolitical risk: Rules or diplomatic changes can alter which customers may receive systems and when.
- Currency and tax risk: Exchange rates and tax developments can affect reported profit even when operating execution is unchanged.
- Technology-adoption risk: New systems may take longer to qualify or gain customer acceptance than planned.
When one of these risks is mentioned, connect it to the affected metric instead of treating it as a detached disclaimer.
9. A worked reading of the Q3 2026 release
Apply the sequence without jumping to a stock verdict. Start with the reported outcome: Q3 sales reached the high end of guidance, gross margin was above the prior quarter’s level, and management characterized execution during the ramp-up as strong. Next, inspect bookings and their EUV share when disclosed, because those figures indicate whether future demand supports the current revenue level. Then examine backlog realization and the timing or cancellation risks attached to it.
After that, explain the margin through Installed Base Management sales and productivity-upgrade demand, while checking whether system mix or timing contributed. Finally, compare the Q4 sales range of €14.2–15.2 billion and approximately 57% margin with the prior guide, and compare the FY2026 range of €44–45 billion and approximately 56% margin with the earlier full-year outlook. The conclusion should identify which assumptions—AI-related demand, capacity, export permissions, customer timing or mix—must hold for the guide to be achieved.

- Guidance is a range that should be compared with the previous range and tested against management’s stated risks.
- The authoritative release package is more reliable than a headline that omits definitions, assumptions or the unaudited status of quarterly statements.
