Read an insurer’s quarterly earnings report in layers: first establish the reporting period and accounting basis, then examine premium quality, underwriting performance, unusual losses, reserves, investments, cash flow, and statutory capital. The key question is not simply whether net income rose. It is whether the insurer is pricing risk adequately, whether claims experience is deteriorating, whether reserves are sufficient, and whether the balance sheet can absorb stress.
A combined ratio below 100% generally means underwriting income and a ratio above 100% means underwriting loss, but the ratio excludes investment income and its exact definition can vary. A reliable interpretation therefore combines reported figures with the company’s reconciliations, prior periods, catastrophe information, reserve development, and statutory disclosures.
Start with the document, period, and accounting basis
Open both the insurer’s investor-relations earnings release and its quarterly filing. The release highlights management’s preferred measures; the filing contains the accounting policies, reconciliations, footnotes, risk disclosures, and balance-sheet detail needed to test those claims.

- Confirm the quarter and year-to-date period. A three-month result can differ sharply from the six- or nine-month result. Write down the exact quarter-end date and whether each figure covers the quarter, the year to date, or the trailing twelve months.
- Check the share count. Basic and diluted weighted-average shares affect per-share earnings. Repurchases, stock issuance, conversions, and preferred dividends can change earnings per share even when total net income is unchanged.
- Identify the accounting basis. Public companies usually present consolidated results under U.S. GAAP or another general-purpose framework. The same insurer also files statutory statements for regulators, often on a state-based basis in the United States.
- Look for restatements and reclassifications. A prior-period number may have been revised, a business may have moved between segments, or an accounting policy may have changed. Use the restated comparative figure rather than an older release.
- Record management’s definitions. Terms such as “underlying,” “adjusted,” “accident year,” “ex-catastrophe,” and “operating income” are not standardized. Copy the reconciliation and footnote definition before comparing the number with another insurer.
A Form 10-Q provides the public-company quarterly reporting framework and financial disclosures. It is the authoritative place to verify what an earnings release summarizes.

Build a picture of premium quality before judging growth
Premium is the starting point for an insurer’s revenue engine, but growth by itself says little about quality. Separate written premium from earned premium and then identify what caused the change.
Written versus earned premium
Written premium is the premium attached to policies written during the period, before it is fully recognized as revenue. Earned premium is the portion recognized for the coverage provided during the period. A fast increase in written premium may not appear immediately in earned premium, while a shrinking book can still produce earned premium for months as existing policies run off.
Ask what drove the change
- Rate: Higher prices on renewing policies can increase premium without adding exposure.
- Exposure: More vehicles, buildings, payroll, insured limits, or other risk units can expand premium even if prices are flat.
- Retention: If existing customers renew at a higher or lower rate, the mix and future earnings stream change.
- New business: New policies may carry different risk, acquisition costs, and early-life loss patterns.
- Geography and line of business: Growth in property, casualty, health, life, or specialty lines has different volatility and capital needs. Geographic expansion can alter catastrophe exposure and legal risk.
- Acquisitions and disposals: Mergers, portfolio transfers, or run-off transactions can move premium without indicating organic growth.
- Reinsurance changes: Retaining more risk can raise net premium while also increasing loss volatility; buying more reinsurance can reduce net premium and net losses.
Read rate, exposure, retention, new business, geography, and product mix together. A company that grows premium while weakening price adequacy or accepting riskier exposure may be destroying value.

Underwriting metrics evaluate the insurance operation before investment income and most financing effects. The basic formulas are:
| Metric | Formula | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Loss ratio | Claims and loss-adjustment expenses ÷ earned premium | How much premium is consumed by claims and the costs of adjusting them. |
| Expense ratio | Underwriting expenses ÷ earned premium | Acquisition, administration, and other underwriting costs relative to premium. |
| Combined ratio | Loss ratio + expense ratio | The underwriting result before investment income and other non-underwriting items. |
As stated in American International Group’s Form 10-Q filed with the SEC in 2025, “A combined ratio of less than 100 indicates underwriting income and a combined ratio of over 100 indicates an underwriting loss.” A 94% ratio therefore represents an underwriting margin of roughly 6% of earned premium under that definition; a 108% ratio represents an underwriting loss of roughly 8%.
Check the company’s exact numerator and denominator
Insurers may include or exclude certain fees, state assessments, pension items, or other costs. Some present a reported combined ratio and an adjusted or underlying ratio. Others show accident-year results before prior-year reserve development. Do not substitute your own definition for the company’s reconciliation.

Read the components, not only the total
A stable combined ratio can conceal offsetting changes. For example, a loss ratio that improves by two points while the expense ratio worsens by two points has a different strategic implication from broad-based improvement. Falling expenses may reflect genuine productivity, a change in commissions, or a shift in business mix rather than better pricing.
Separate catastrophe losses and other unusual effects
Quarterly earnings can be dominated by events that do not represent the normal earning power of the insurance book. Build a bridge from reported results to the company’s adjusted or underlying presentation, while preserving every disclosed adjustment.
Catastrophe losses
Hurricanes, severe convective storms, wildfires, earthquakes, floods, and other declared catastrophes can produce a large loss in one quarter. Determine whether the figure is gross or net of reinsurance, whether it includes loss-adjustment expenses, and whether it is an initial estimate that may change as claims are settled. Compare catastrophe losses with the company’s modeled exposure and historical experience, but do not assume that a quiet quarter proves low risk.
Prior-year reserve development
Reserve development is the change in estimates for claims from earlier accident years. Favorable development releases reserves and improves the current quarter’s loss ratio; adverse development strengthens reserves and reduces earnings. Because the event relates to prior underwriting, isolate it from the current accident-year result when assessing present pricing.
Other items to identify
- Large individual claims or a cluster of non-catastrophe losses.
- Reinsurance recoveries, reinstatement premiums, commutations, or collateral changes.
- Restructuring, litigation, regulatory settlements, or legal costs.
- Tax-rate changes, discrete tax benefits, or valuation-allowance adjustments.
- Gains or losses from portfolio sales, business disposals, or debt extinguishment.
Ask a counterfactual question for each disclosed item: what would net income, the loss ratio, and the combined ratio have been without it? The answer is useful only if the company supplies enough detail to calculate it; otherwise label the effect as not quantified rather than estimating it.

Current accident-year performance
Accident-year results assign losses to the period in which the insured event occurred. They are often a better indicator of current pricing and claims conditions than a reported ratio that includes old reserve releases or charges. Check whether the insurer presents accident-year results before and after catastrophes, and preserve the stated definitions.
Reserve development pattern
Repeated adverse development in the same line or accident years can indicate that earlier assumptions were too optimistic. Repeated favorable releases may reflect genuinely conservative reserving, but they can also mask weakening current-year results if releases are needed to produce an acceptable reported ratio. Look for the direction, size, and persistence of development rather than treating one release as proof of reserve strength.
Loss-cost and claims commentary
Read management’s discussion of repair costs, medical inflation, wage rates, litigation, claim frequency, and claim severity. Frequency measures how often claims occur; severity measures their average size. A falling frequency rate can be overwhelmed by rising severity, especially in liability or property lines.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePricing adequacy
Compare renewal rate changes with reported loss-cost trends and exposure changes. Rate increases below loss-cost inflation may not improve profitability, even when premium grows. Conversely, a lower rate increase can be adequate if exposure quality improves or prior increases are still earning through the book.
Analyze investment income separately from underwriting
Insurers invest premiums until claims are paid, so investment results can materially affect net income even when underwriting is stable. Do not use investment gains to excuse a deteriorating combined ratio or treat an underwriting improvement as evidence of strong total earnings without examining the portfolio.
Net investment income
Review interest income, dividends, limited-partnership income, and other recurring investment returns. Higher market yields may increase reinvestment income gradually as securities mature. The effect depends on asset duration, cash-flow timing, and the amount of new money available to invest.

Realized and unrealized gains or losses
Realized gains and losses arise when investments are sold or otherwise recognized. Unrealized changes reflect market values at the reporting date and can be volatile with interest rates, credit spreads, equity markets, or foreign exchange. Determine which changes flow through net income, other comprehensive income, or statutory surplus under the applicable accounting basis.
Portfolio risks
- Duration: Longer-duration assets generally react more to interest-rate movements and may better match long-tail liabilities if managed appropriately.
- Credit quality: Downgrades and defaults can reduce income, create impairments, and weaken capital.
- Concentration: Heavy exposure to one issuer, sector, geography, or asset class increases stress sensitivity.
- Liquidity: Assets that are difficult to sell may be unsuitable for near-term claim payments, even if their accounting value appears stable.
- Asset-liability matching: Compare investment cash flows and duration with the timing and uncertainty of claim obligations.
Check cash flow and balance-sheet quality
Net income is an accrual measure. Operating cash flow shows whether premium collections and claim payments are converting that accounting result into cash.
Operating cash flow
Compare operating cash flow with net income for the quarter and year to date, then investigate large differences. Premium receivables, claim payments, reinsurance recoverables, payables, and changes in policyholder funds can create timing differences. One quarter of negative cash flow is not automatically a crisis, but persistent weakness while reported earnings rise deserves scrutiny.
Receivables and reinsurance recoverables
Inspect premium receivables for aging and concentration. Review reinsurance recoverables by counterparty, collateral, dispute status, and collectability. Reinsurance reduces net loss volatility only to the extent that the reinsurer pays when required.
Debt and liquidity
List debt maturities, interest expense, committed facilities, cash, and highly liquid securities. Consider whether the insurer could fund a catastrophe, collateral call, or debt maturity without selling less-liquid assets at unfavorable prices.
Asset and liability valuation
Read fair-value hierarchy disclosures, impairment language, and changes in discount rates. Market-value losses can reduce equity or statutory surplus even when the insurer intends to hold a bond to maturity; the accounting treatment depends on the instrument and reporting framework.

Use GAAP and statutory results for different questions
GAAP and statutory accounting are not interchangeable scorecards.
| Question | GAAP perspective | Statutory perspective |
|---|---|---|
| Primary audience | Investors, creditors, and other general-purpose financial-statement users. | Insurance regulators and policyholder-protection systems. |
| Main focus | Period performance, financial position, and comparability for investors. | Conservative recognition of policyholder obligations and available capital. |
| Useful outputs | Net income, earnings per share, equity, comprehensive income, and segment results. | Admitted assets, policyholders’ surplus, risk-based capital and related solvency measures. |
| Interpretation | Helps evaluate profitability and value creation. | Helps regulators assess financial soundness, liquidity, and ability to meet claims. |
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners explains that statutory accounting supports consistent reporting and helps regulators determine whether an insurer is financially sound or solvent. Statutory accounting generally emphasizes conservative treatment of assets and explicit recognition of policyholder obligations. GAAP net income can be strong while statutory surplus is pressured by investment losses, reserve changes, or non-admitted assets; the reverse can also occur. Use both views when judging resilience.
Capital measures need their own definitions
Do not assume that “capital,” “surplus,” “available capital,” and “risk-based capital” mean the same thing. Record the jurisdiction, reporting date, calculation method, and whether the number is consolidated, legal-entity, or group-level. A ratio without its denominator and regulatory threshold is incomplete.

Use at least three reference points: the immediately preceding quarter, the same quarter a year earlier, and management’s stated guidance or target. Each comparison answers a different question.
| Comparison | What it reveals | Primary caution |
|---|---|---|
| Sequential quarter | Recent momentum and seasonality. | Catastrophe seasons and normal claim timing can make quarters unlike one another. |
| Year-over-year quarter | Change under a more comparable seasonal pattern. | Portfolio acquisitions, disposals, and rate changes may still alter the base. |
| Year to date | Whether the quarter’s result is representative of the year so far. | A strong first half can conceal a deteriorating latest quarter, or vice versa. |
| Peer comparison | Relative pricing, claims, expenses, investment returns, and capital. | Definitions, business mix, geography, catastrophe exposure, and reinsurance differ. |
Normalize periods, currencies, segment boundaries, and metric definitions before ranking insurers. Compare reported with reported and adjusted with adjusted. If one company removes catastrophes and prior-year development while another does not, the percentages are not directly comparable.
A worked hypothetical example
Suppose an insurer reports $1,000 million of earned premium, $650 million of losses and loss-adjustment expenses, and $300 million of underwriting expenses for a quarter. Its loss ratio is 65% ($650 million ÷ $1,000 million), its expense ratio is 30%, and its combined ratio is 95%. Under the conventional definition, that implies a 5% underwriting margin before investment income.
Now assume the quarter includes $40 million of catastrophe losses and $20 million of adverse prior-year reserve development. If the company’s reconciliation permits both items to be removed, the adjusted combined ratio would improve by six percentage points to 89%. That adjusted figure is not a replacement for the reported 95%; it answers a narrower question about current-period performance excluding the specified items. If the company does not provide the necessary reconciliation, do not calculate an “underlying” ratio from incomplete data.
Finally, imagine that net investment income rises while operating cash flow falls because premium receivables increase. Net income may still increase, but the combination suggests that earnings and cash conversion should be analyzed separately.
Quick Recap
Red flags and confirmation checks
- Premium grows while exposure or risk quality is unexplained: find the rate, retention, mix, and reinsurance bridge.
- Reported combined ratio improves only because of reserve releases: inspect current accident-year results and earlier-year development.
- Underlying metrics change definition: read the reconciliation before comparing periods.
- Large catastrophe adjustment with no gross/net explanation: determine the effect of reinsurance and reinstatement costs.
- Net income rises while operating cash flow deteriorates: examine receivables, claim timing, and recoverables.
- Investment gains offset underwriting losses: separate recurring income from market-sensitive gains.
- Statutory surplus weakens despite positive GAAP earnings: identify valuation, reserve, admitted-asset, or capital changes.
- Repeated adverse reserve development: test whether pricing, claims inflation, or reserving assumptions are still credible.
- Peer ranking relies on unlike periods or metrics: rebuild the comparison with aligned definitions.
A repeatable quarterly reading checklist
- Download the earnings release, quarterly filing, financial statements, segment tables, and statutory disclosures available for the period.
- Write down the quarter-end date, year-to-date period, share counts, restatements, currency, and accounting basis.
- Map written and earned premium by line, geography, and source of growth.
- Calculate or verify loss, expense, and combined ratios using the insurer’s stated definitions.
- Reconcile reported results to accident-year, adjusted, or underlying measures without mixing definitions.
- List catastrophe losses, prior-year reserve development, large claims, reinsurance effects, restructuring, legal items, and tax items.
- Review several periods of reserve development and current loss-cost, frequency, severity, and pricing commentary.
- Separate net investment income from realized and unrealized market effects; inspect duration, credit quality, impairments, and concentration.
- Compare operating cash flow with net income and review receivables, reinsurance recoverables, debt, liquidity, and asset-liability duration.
- Read statutory surplus and capital disclosures alongside GAAP profitability.
- Compare sequential, year-over-year, year-to-date, and peer results only after aligning periods, mix, geography, catastrophe exposure, and definitions.
- Write the conclusion in three parts: what appears recurring, what was unusual, and what evidence would change the assessment next quarter.
