To read an AI company’s earnings report, separate what it earned from what it expects to earn, then examine how profitable that revenue is and what the company is spending to support it. Start with the reporting period and total revenue; move to AI-related segments, margin definitions, guidance, and capital spending. A single growth rate or capex headline is not a verdict: each figure needs its accounting basis, comparison period, business context, and—where relevant—currency basis.

The examples below are issuer-specific disclosures from 2026 fiscal reporting, not industry benchmarks. Fiscal years differ between companies, and an “AI” segment or service is not a standardized accounting category.

How do I read an AI company’s earnings report?

Read the report in a fixed order: establish the period, determine how much revenue the company generated and where it came from, check profitability on a consistent accounting basis, compare management’s new outlook with its prior outlook, and then assess investment in infrastructure alongside cash generation and financing. This sequence helps distinguish growth in AI-related activity from growth in the whole business—and spending to build capacity from evidence that the capacity is paying off.

  1. Identify the document and period. Note the fiscal quarter or year, the period-end date, and whether you are reading a results release, call materials or transcript, or filed report. A release may give headline numbers; call materials can explain management’s interpretation; a filing provides formal disclosures and definitions.
  2. Read total revenue before the AI headline. Record the reported amount, its period-on-period comparison, and whether growth is year-over-year or sequential. Then identify relevant segments and their share of the overall business.
  3. Check how growth is measured. Look for reported-currency and constant-currency rates, changes in segment definitions, or acquisitions that affect comparisons.
  4. Separate margin measures. Keep gross margin, operating margin, and other profitability measures distinct. Mark each as GAAP or non-GAAP and read the issuer’s definition of any adjusted figure.
  5. Put guidance beside the previous outlook. Write down the forecast period, range, and measurement basis. Compare the new range with the last one and later with the result actually reported.
  6. Unpack capital spending. Determine what the company includes in capex, how much it reports as cash paid for property and equipment (PP&E), whether lease-financed assets are discussed separately, and what assets the spending buys.
  7. Connect investment to the business model. Consider whether the company owns data centers and compute, sells software or models, supplies hardware, or combines several layers—and what that implies for costs and financing.

Keep a small comparison sheet as you read. It should include the exact fiscal period, total and relevant segment revenue, growth basis, margin definition, guidance period and range, capex treatment, and operating cash flow or financing disclosures. If any item is missing from the release, check the company’s call materials or filing rather than assuming it matches another issuer’s presentation.

What does AI company revenue growth mean?

A revenue growth rate describes change in sales over a specified period and comparison base; it does not by itself show the size, mix, or durability of the business. Read the rate together with the dollar amount, the segment producing it, and the currency basis.

Start with total revenue, then locate the AI-related business

Total revenue tells you the scale of the company’s sales. Segment revenue can show where growth is concentrated, but the segment most exposed to AI may be only one part of the overall business. A company can report rapid growth in a cloud or AI-related service while its total-company growth is slower because the segment is smaller or other parts of the business are growing at a different pace.

For example, Salesforce’s results presentation distinguishes total revenue from subscription and support revenue and presents constant-currency growth alongside nominal amounts. That is useful because it lets a reader see both the scale of the company and the performance of a major revenue category, instead of treating one rate as a summary of the entire business.

Check the period and comparison base

Year-over-year growth compares a quarter or year with the corresponding period a year earlier. Sequential growth compares with the immediately preceding quarter. They answer different questions: year-over-year growth can reduce seasonal distortion, while sequential growth may show more recent momentum but can be affected by seasonality and the timing of customer purchases.

Read the period label carefully. “Q4” might mean a company’s fiscal fourth quarter, not the calendar quarter ending in December. Fiscal years can end in different months, so comparisons between companies should preserve each company’s exact period rather than treating two similarly numbered quarters as identical.

Distinguish reported-currency from constant-currency growth

Reported-currency growth reflects the amounts in the company’s reporting currency. Constant-currency growth attempts to show performance using an exchange-rate basis that removes some effect of currency movements. If both are presented, keep the two rates separate: constant currency is an additional comparison, not the reported amount of revenue.

Also check whether the company explains its calculation. Do not apply one issuer’s definition of constant currency to another issuer without verifying that the methods are comparable.

Read segment labels as company-specific

“AI revenue,” “AI cloud,” and “AI-related demand” do not have a universal accounting definition. A company may report an established segment, describe a service spanning several segments, or use a qualitative label without providing a separate revenue figure. Read the issuer’s segment definitions and methodology before treating a figure as comparable with another company’s.

IREN’s FY2026 Form 10-K, for example, describes its AI cloud offering as a vertically integrated service across data-center, compute, and software layers. That company-specific description includes infrastructure and managed services; it is not a template for interpreting the revenue of a software vendor or a chip supplier.

How should I compare AI-company margins?

Compare the same kind of margin, calculated on the same accounting basis, over the same type of period. A percentage labeled “operating margin” can differ materially depending on whether it is GAAP or non-GAAP and on what costs the company excludes from an adjusted measure.

Know what each margin measures

  • Gross margin relates revenue to the costs assigned to producing or delivering the goods and services sold. For an infrastructure-heavy service, costs associated with equipment and facilities can matter; the exact presentation depends on the issuer’s accounting.
  • Operating margin relates operating income to revenue. It reflects operating expenses in addition to costs included in gross profit, subject to the company’s stated accounting presentation.
  • Net margin relates net income to revenue and includes items below operating income, such as interest and taxes, as well as other items included in the reported result.

Do not substitute one measure for another. A report may emphasize operating margin while a reader is interested in the effect of financing costs or taxes; a gross-margin trend will not answer that question by itself.

Keep GAAP and non-GAAP figures separate

GAAP figures follow the applicable accounting rules. Non-GAAP figures are issuer-defined adjustments intended to present another view of performance. If a company publishes both, record them separately and look for its definition and reconciliation showing what was excluded or adjusted.

Salesforce and Cisco both present GAAP and non-GAAP operating margins in their results materials. Their paired figures illustrate why two values in one presentation may not be interchangeable. Avoid calling one the “real” margin: the useful question is what each includes, why management supplies it, and whether the definition has changed.

Look for explanations of a change

Once you have selected a consistent measure, compare it across periods and read management’s explanation for movement. Depending on what the issuer discloses, relevant factors can include sales mix, infrastructure investment, utilization, depreciation, or operating costs. A company may discuss a margin effect in its call materials even when the headline release focuses on revenue and earnings.

Microsoft’s FY2026 fourth-quarter call materials discuss gross and operating margins in the context of AI infrastructure investment and product usage. Treat that explanation as specific to Microsoft’s reported business and period. Do not infer that another company’s margin change has the same cause merely because both discuss AI.

How do I evaluate company guidance?

Guidance is management’s forward-looking expectation for a specified future period; it is not a reported result or a guarantee. Record the forecast period, the range, and the basis of the metric, then compare the new outlook with the preceding one and eventually with actual results.

Write down the full forecast, not just its midpoint

For each guided metric, capture whether management gives a point estimate or a range, what fiscal period it covers, and whether it is stated in reported currency or constant currency. Keep revenue growth guidance distinct from an earnings or margin outlook, and do not compare a full-year forecast with a quarterly result as if they covered the same time span.

Oracle’s FY2027 outlook provides an example of why the basis matters: its Q1 FY2027 total-revenue growth guidance is 27%–29% in both constant currency and U.S. dollars, while its cloud-revenue growth outlook uses separate constant-currency and U.S.-dollar ranges. The cloud ranges should not be collapsed into a single number or described as the total-company revenue outlook.

Compare with the last outlook and later actual results

When a company updates its forecast, compare the new range with the previous range for the same metric and period. If the period has passed, compare the reported result with the guidance that applied at the time. This shows whether expectations moved and how the eventual result related to them; a forecast should not be presented as an outcome before the company reports it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cisco’s results page, like Oracle’s, presents quarterly and full-year revenue guidance ranges. Those are useful examples of a company giving readers more than one forecast horizon, but the periods and definitions still need to be recorded separately.

Read assumptions and qualifications

Check the release or call materials for stated assumptions and caveats that accompany guidance. A range is an estimate under those conditions, and its apparent precision does not eliminate uncertainty. If the company gives different bases—such as constant currency and reported currency—retain the labels whenever you quote or compare the numbers.

How much are AI companies spending on capex?

There is no single capex level that applies to every AI company. The meaningful amount is the issuer’s figure for a defined period and accounting presentation, interpreted alongside the assets being purchased, lease financing, cash paid for equipment and property, expected deployment, and the company’s ability to fund the investment.

Do not treat related spending disclosures as the same figure

Microsoft’s FY2026 fourth-quarter call materials report $41 billion in capital expenditures. The same materials say roughly two thirds of that capex was for short-lived assets, primarily CPUs and GPUs, with the remainder for long-lived assets. They also report $5.6 billion in total finance leases, primarily for large data-center sites, and $35.8 billion in cash paid for PP&E.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are distinct disclosures, not figures to add together automatically. The $41 billion capex figure, finance leases, and cash paid for PP&E describe related but different aspects of spending and financing. Use the company’s own accounting presentation to understand how they relate; do not present them as interchangeable or construct a total by combining them without that reconciliation.

Ask what is being built and when it becomes useful

Capex can support assets with different useful lives and deployment schedules. In Microsoft’s example, the distinction between short-lived CPUs and GPUs and longer-lived assets matters because the company describes different kinds of investment within the overall figure. A headline total alone does not tell you when new capacity will be ready, how quickly it will be used, or how long the assets are expected to contribute.

Look for disclosures about data-center construction, power availability, equipment delivery, and expected capacity or revenue enabled. If the report does not state timing or expected utilization, do not infer it from the capex amount. Investment can precede the related revenue, and a spending increase by itself does not demonstrate that demand has converted into productive capacity.

Consider funding, obligations, and returns together

Review operating cash flow alongside capex to understand how much investment is supported by cash generated from operations. Then look for relevant discussion of debt, lease obligations, customer prepayments, and other funding sources. Finance leases can create obligations associated with infrastructure even when a reader is focusing on cash paid for PP&E.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no automatic positive or negative verdict in a rising capex figure. The useful questions are whether deployed capacity is being used, whether related revenue and margins are developing, whether financing obligations appear manageable in the company’s disclosures, and whether future spending aligns with management’s guidance. The answers may arrive over several reporting periods rather than in the quarter when the investment is announced.

Why do AI companies have different revenue and capex profiles?

AI companies do not all sell the same thing or own the same infrastructure. A model or application company, a cloud provider, a semiconductor supplier, and a data-center operator can face different costs, capacity needs, and routes to revenue, so a single ratio or headline is rarely a fair comparison.

IREN’s FY2026 Form 10-K describes its AI cloud business across data-center, compute, and software layers, including land, power, substations, buildings, cooling, GPUs and CPUs, storage, networking, and managed software and services. This illustrates how an infrastructure-oriented provider can span assets and services. It should be read as IREN’s description of its own offering, not generalized to all AI businesses.

When comparing two companies, use their filings to establish who owns or operates the infrastructure and what each company actually sells. A company that purchases or leases data-center capacity may report a different investment profile from one that builds and operates facilities. Likewise, revenue from hardware, cloud services, or software should not be treated as if it had the same cost structure merely because each business participates in AI demand.

What should I compare when reading two AI company reports?

Use a like-for-like checklist before drawing a conclusion. The comparison is only as meaningful as the definitions and periods behind its figures.

Comparison point What to record Why it matters
Fiscal period Fiscal quarter or year and period-end date Fiscal calendars and year ends can differ, so similarly named quarters may cover different dates.
Revenue scale and mix Total revenue, relevant segment revenue, and the period each covers A fast-growing segment may be a different size from the overall company.
Growth basis Year-over-year or sequential; reported currency or constant currency Different comparison bases answer different questions and can produce different rates.
Margin definition Gross, operating, or net margin; GAAP or non-GAAP; adjustment definition Similar labels do not guarantee the same accounting measure.
Guidance Forecast period, range, metric, and currency or accounting basis A forecast is comparable only when its scope and basis match.
Capital spending Reported capex, cash PP&E, and treatment of finance leases Related disclosures can represent different measures and should not be combined casually.
Operating model What the company sells and whether it owns, leases, or relies on infrastructure Business models create different revenue and investment profiles.
Funding capacity Operating cash flow and disclosed debt, lease, or other funding obligations Spending needs context about how it is financed and carried.

If a field is not clearly disclosed, mark it as unavailable rather than filling it with an assumption. A narrower comparison with explicit definitions is more useful than a precise-looking table that combines incompatible measures.

What common mistakes distort an earnings report?

  • Calling a segment rate the company’s growth rate. Label whether the figure belongs to total revenue or a specific business.
  • Comparing fiscal quarters by name alone. Preserve period-end dates, especially when companies have different fiscal calendars.
  • Mixing constant-currency and reported growth. Keep each rate paired with its stated basis.
  • Blending GAAP and non-GAAP margins. Retain the label and inspect adjustments before drawing a trend.
  • Treating guidance as a result. Mark it as an estimate for its stated future period and later check it against the reported outcome.
  • Equating capex, lease commitments, and cash PP&E. Read each disclosure in the issuer’s accounting context.
  • Assuming every AI business has the same cost structure. Establish what the issuer sells and which infrastructure it owns or uses.
  • Calling high capex either automatically good or automatically bad. Look for deployment, utilization, revenue, margins, funding, and the expected timing of capacity.

Which documents should I read after the earnings release?

Use the company’s own materials to answer different questions rather than expecting one document to contain every detail. A results release is a practical starting point for headline results and outlook; earnings-call materials or a transcript can add management discussion; a filed report is important for formal financial disclosures, segment definitions, and risk or accounting details.

The 2026 examples in this guide come from Microsoft’s FY2026 Q4 results release and call materials, Oracle’s FY2026 results and FY2027 guidance, IREN’s FY2026 Form 10-K, and quarterly results materials from Salesforce and Cisco. Their figures and outlooks belong to those issuers and periods. For a current investment decision or a new comparison, use the company’s latest applicable release and filing rather than carrying forward an older period’s numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does constant-currency growth mean in an earnings report?

It is a supplemental growth calculation that attempts to reduce the effect of exchange-rate movements by applying an adjusted currency basis. The exact method is issuer-specific, so check the company’s explanation before comparing its constant-currency rate with another company’s.

Where can I find an AI company’s segment definitions?

Start with the segment note and business description in the company’s filed annual or quarterly report; investor-relations presentations may also summarize how management groups operations. The formal filing is especially useful when a marketing label such as “AI cloud” does not map neatly to a separately reported revenue line.

Why can a company report strong revenue growth but still have weak cash flow?

Revenue is an accounting measure of sales for a period, while cash flow reflects the timing of cash receipts and payments as well as other operating movements. To understand the gap, read the cash-flow statement and related notes rather than treating revenue and cash generation as equivalent.

How often should I update an earnings comparison?

Update it whenever a company reports a new period or revises its outlook, and retain the old period’s figures so the direction of change remains visible. For a fair comparison, make sure both companies’ latest available periods and guidance horizons are identified rather than assuming they report on the same schedule.
