To randomize a video playlist in OBS, add a VLC Video Source, load your files, and enable Shuffle Playlist. Turn on Loop Playlist if playback should restart when the list ends. OBS—not YouTube—does the shuffling, and OBS does not guarantee a newly randomized order at every loop.

Set up a shuffled playlist in OBS

  1. Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video Source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
  2. Add the source. In OBS, select the scene you want, then in the Sources dock click + and choose VLC Video Source. If that choice is missing, check that VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS. The OBS Sources Guide explains the source workflow.
  3. Load your files. In the source properties, add the local media files to the playlist. OBS lists support for formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV; check the current OBS format guidance if you have another format.
  4. Set playback order and looping. Enable Shuffle Playlist to randomize the order and Loop Playlist to restart after the list ends. OBS documents shuffle as randomizing media-file order and loop as repeating the playlist; shuffle is off and loop is on by default. The OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation was published on January 11, 2022.
  5. Choose what happens when the source is not visible. In the source properties, select the visibility behavior that suits your scene changes: stop and restart, pause and resume, or always play while hidden. If the playlist is on your active scene continuously, this setting is most relevant when you hide the source or switch scenes.
  6. Preview playback. Confirm that the video and audio appear as expected in OBS before connecting to YouTube.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube, open Live Control Room and create or select a livestream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish or share it.
  3. Start streaming from OBS, then use Live Control Room to preview and manage the broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe this URL-and-key workflow. First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours.
  4. Check the YouTube preview for video and audio, monitor stream quality, and verify that any local archive files you intend to keep are being recorded. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend checking the preview and monitoring the stream.

What shuffle and loop do—and do not—guarantee

Shuffle and loop are separate settings: shuffle randomizes the playlist order, while loop restarts playback when the list ends. The OBS documentation does not promise a fresh random order at each loop boundary. The current source implementation describes shuffling when settings are applied, and an issue filed for OBS 32.1.1 on April 26, 2026, requested re-randomization on initialization or reload; it was closed as not planned. That issue is a report about a particular version, not proof of behavior for every OBS setup. If a different order each cycle is essential, test the exact OBS version and playlist configuration you plan to run. See the VLC Video Source implementation and OBS issue 13358.

Plan for a continuous broadcast

Keep the local encoder and connection running

With this method, OBS plays and encodes the files on your computer, then sends the stream over your internet connection. A 24/7 run therefore depends on the computer, OBS, storage, and connection staying available. YouTube recommends upload-bandwidth headroom of 20% and warns that connection interruptions can break a stream; see its streaming tips. YouTube also says channels must be verified and have had no livestream restriction in the previous 90 days, and creators must be at least 16. See Get started with live streaming.

Do not rely on a full 24-hour YouTube archive

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local recording if you need a backup. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. A single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast is not a reliable way to create a complete YouTube replay. See Archive live streams and DVR on live streams.

Confirm you have rights to every file

You are responsible for having the rights needed to broadcast the video and audio, including applicable music rights, and for complying with YouTube’s rules and applicable law. Randomizing or looping files does not grant rebroadcast permission. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and review the copyright safety checklist before streaming.

Common problems and fixes

  • VLC Video Source is missing: Install VLC, then reopen OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
  • The source does not play a file: Check that the file path is valid and the format is among those OBS documents as supported. Try a supported format if playback still fails.
  • The playlist stops at the end: Open the VLC Video Source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
  • Files play in list order: Enable Shuffle Playlist in the source properties.
  • The order does not change after a loop: A new shuffle on every cycle is not guaranteed by OBS. Test the behavior on your version; do not assume loop itself reshuffles.
  • The source pauses or restarts after a scene change: Review its behavior while not visible and choose pause/resume, stop/restart, or always play to match your scene setup.
  • YouTube does not show the incoming stream: Check that you selected the intended livestream and copied its stream URL and key correctly. Confirm OBS is streaming and inspect the Live Control Room preview.
  • The broadcast drops: Check the computer and network connection and leave the upload-bandwidth headroom YouTube recommends. A local interruption can break the stream.
  • You need a complete replay: Do not rely on YouTube to archive a stream longer than 12 hours. Keep a local recording if preserving the full program matters.
