To raise money with video crowdfunding, choose a funding model and platform that fit your project, set a goal that covers both making the project and meeting your obligations, and make a clear video showing who you are, what exists so far, what the money will fund, and what supporters should do next. A video can help explain a campaign and build trust, but it cannot guarantee funding.
Choose the kind of crowdfunding that fits your project
Crowdfunding can mean several different arrangements. Decide what you are asking people to do before you write a script or set a goal: support a project in exchange for a reward, donate, subscribe to recurring support, lend money, or invest in a security. Those choices affect what supporters expect and which legal and platform rules apply.
| Model | What supporters provide | What to clarify |
|---|---|---|
| Reward-based | A pledge, often in exchange for a reward or the project’s eventual output. | What each reward includes, when you expect to deliver it, and what could delay or change delivery. |
| Donation-based | A contribution without a promised product or financial return. | Who controls the funds, what they will be used for, and whether the donation is tax-deductible. Donations to individuals are not tax-deductible merely because an organizer later intends to give the money to a charity. |
| Membership | Recurring support, commonly in exchange for ongoing access or benefits. | What supporters receive over time and how they can manage or end recurring support. |
| Debt lending | A loan that is expected to be repaid under stated terms. | Repayment terms, risks, and the applicable platform and legal requirements. |
| Equity or securities | An investment with potential financial return and risk. | Securities rules apply; this is not the same as a reward or donation campaign. |
Platform descriptions and terms change, and eligibility depends on project and location. Kickstarter’s September 11, 2026 overview describes Kickstarter as reward-based and all-or-nothing, GoFundMe as donation-based and flexible, Indiegogo as reward-based with funding options that vary, and Patreon as membership support. Treat these as platform-published descriptions, not a substitute for checking current country eligibility, fees, payout rules, and campaign terms before choosing.
Compare platforms on the details that affect your campaign
- Does the platform support your funding model, country, project category, and creator eligibility?
- Is the goal all-or-nothing or flexible, and what happens if you do not reach it?
- What platform and payment fees apply, and when are funds released?
- What do supporters reasonably expect in return, and what refund terms apply?
- How will you handle shipping, taxes, updates, and post-campaign fulfillment?
Indiegogo’s creator setup guidance, updated August 18, 2026, advises creators to prepare a project-page draft, check eligibility and fees, plan shipping, taxes, and refunds, test the campaign flow, and submit the project for review. Its lifecycle includes an upcoming phase to build an audience, an active crowdfunding phase, and post-campaign pledge management and fulfillment. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) likewise recommends checking what a platform keeps in fees and when funds are released. Recheck the terms that apply to your own location and campaign at launch.

Set a goal you can actually fulfill
Work out the cost of completing the project and meeting every promise before setting the public goal. Include production, packaging, shipping, platform and payment fees, taxes, and a realistic allowance for delays or changes. There is no universal fee rate or goal formula that applies to every platform, location, and project.
Build the budget from the promises outward
- List the work required to finish the project and the cost of each major stage.
- For every reward, estimate production, packaging, and delivery costs at the quantities you are offering.
- Add platform and payment fees, applicable taxes, and a contingency for foreseeable changes or delays.
- Check that your funding target and campaign terms explain what happens if you raise less or more than expected.
Be precise about what the money is for. The FTC cautions that campaign organizers control funds and may not deliver them to the intended person or cause. For a business project or invention, a successful campaign does not prove that the project will be completed, and a contribution is not necessarily a purchase of a finished product. In the FTC’s words: “When you give to a business project or invention through a crowdfunding site, you’re not buying the product. You’re simply helping fund its production.”
Plan a video that answers the backer’s main questions
Your campaign video should complement—not replace—the campaign page. Kickstarter’s creator guidance recommends a short introduction, project features and benefits, the creator’s backstory, supporting facts or milestones, and a clear call to action. Its story guidance also asks creators to explain the project’s production stage, risks, timeline, milestones, budget, partnerships, and plans for handling challenges. Put key information in campaign-page text as well, so people using screen readers can access it.
A practical video outline
- Introduce yourself and the project. Say who you are and what you are making in plain language.
- Show what exists now. Film the real prototype, work sample, design, rehearsal, or process. Make clear what is finished and what is still planned.
- Explain why it matters. Describe who the project serves, why you are making it, and why you are asking for support now.
- Explain the funding need. State what the campaign will pay for. Put meaningful budget details, milestones, and timeline on the campaign page, too.
- Name important uncertainties. Explain the material risks and how you intend to respond to delays, changes, or other challenges.
- Describe supporter expectations accurately. Explain rewards or other benefits without promising more than you can deliver.
- Make one clear ask. Invite viewers to pledge, donate, or share, as appropriate to your campaign.
This outline synthesizes platform guidance; it is not a tested formula or a promise of conversions. Use the same substantiated claims in the video and campaign page. If a date, feature, partner, or result is uncertain, say so rather than presenting it as settled.

Show progress honestly
Match the footage to the project’s real stage. A prototype demonstration should show what the prototype can do now, not functionality that exists only in a concept or animation. Kickstarter’s current rules require honest presentation and materials the creator has rights to use. For Design and Technology projects, Kickstarter says prototype demonstrations must reflect the product’s current state; creators may not use CGI or special effects to depict functionality that does not yet exist. If software or hardware integration is unfinished, disclose its status or dependencies. Kickstarter states that projects must be clearly and fully presented at submission.
Film with simple equipment
You do not need a large production budget to begin. Kickstarter’s 2016 DIY checklist says a webcam or smartphone, good lighting, a quiet and tidy space, a planned script, a friend to hold the camera, the project itself (including sketches or prototypes), and the creator are enough to start. A smartphone tripod can be a convenient optional aid if you are filming alone; it is not a platform requirement.
- Choose a quiet location and tidy the visible background.
- Use good available light so viewers can see you and the project clearly.
- Plan the script and shots before recording; show the work rather than relying only on spoken claims.
- Ask someone to hold the camera if you do not have a stable way to position a phone or webcam.
- Review the recording for clear speech and accurate statements before publishing.
Prepare the campaign page and launch plan
The page and video should tell the same story. Before launch, explain the project, funding goal, use of funds, timeline, risks, rewards, and fulfillment plan in writing. Check eligibility, applicable fees, shipping and tax handling, and refund terms. Test the pledge or contribution flow and make a plan for answering questions and updating supporters.
Many campaigns also need an audience-development phase before launch. Use that time to explain the project and invite people to follow its progress, without implying that interest or a video view guarantees contributions. After the campaign, keep supporters informed about production and fulfillment, especially if dates or plans change.

Special rules for U.S. securities crowdfunding
If you are offering a security, do not treat the campaign as an ordinary reward or donation drive. The SEC’s issuer guide says a U.S. Regulation Crowdfunding offering must be conducted exclusively through one online platform operated by a broker-dealer or funding portal registered with the SEC and FINRA. The guide describes pre-filing “testing the waters” as subject to conditions: no money may be solicited or accepted, no purchase offer may be accepted before the relevant filing and requirements, and indications of interest create no obligation.
The SEC’s Regulation Crowdfunding interpretation, last updated July 9, 2026, says an issuer may advertise offering terms outside the intermediary’s platform only in notices limited to information described in Rule 204(b); it also says a video may advertise offering terms if it complies with that rule. This is a specialized securities-law area, not general campaign-video advice. Consult current SEC guidance and qualified counsel about the actual offering and relevant jurisdiction.
What a campaign video can—and cannot—show
Kickstarter’s “Creating an Effective Campaign Video” lesson reports that 75% of successful Kickstarter campaigns feature a video. The lesson text does not specify the dataset period, denominator definition, or methodology. That platform-reported figure does not establish that adding a video causes a campaign to succeed. The sources do not establish a broadly valid ideal runtime or an independent causal estimate of how much a video raises, so avoid treating a particular length or percentage lift as a rule.
Keep a separate YouTube project stream running in the cloud
A crowdfunding pitch video is not the same thing as an always-on YouTube stream. If your project also needs a 24/7 YouTube showcase made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on; it does not stream from a camera or send to other platforms. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
