For the 2026 VCT EMEA Kickoff, there was no public sign-up that let an individual player or an unaffiliated Premier team enter directly. Riot’s 12-team field consisted of VCT EMEA partner teams, the two teams promoted through the previous Ascension system (PCIFIC Esports and ULF Esports), and returning partner Gentle Mates. A new organization had to progress through Riot’s competitive ecosystem before it could become eligible for a league-level Kickoff place.
The practical route was to form a compliant roster, compete in VALORANT Premier, win promotion into the appropriate EMEA Challenger League, perform in Challengers EMEA and then reach the VCT league or its promotion pathway. Riot’s announced 2027 model changes the first part of that route by reserving four Kickoff places for Open Qualifier teams, so the current season’s rules must always take priority over assumptions based on 2026.

What “qualifying for Kickoff” meant in 2026
The 2026 EMEA Kickoff was a league-level event rather than a consumer tournament. The field had 12 teams:
- Regular VCT EMEA partner teams.
- PCIFIC Esports and ULF Esports, promoted through the previous Ascension system.
- Returning partner Gentle Mates.
That structure meant Premier success alone could not create a 2026 Kickoff berth. Premier was the starting point for developing a team and reaching Challengers, not a direct application window for Kickoff.

Because the 2026 event has already concluded, any team planning for a future Kickoff should use the season-specific announcement, registration notice and Riot rules library that apply to that year. Riot’s June 2026 announcement describes a different 2027 access model.
The route from a new team to the VCT level
1. Form an organization and a legal, eligible roster
Start by creating an organization capable of signing players and meeting Riot’s competition, contract and administrative requirements. Eligibility is not only about game skill. Riot’s regional-residency, age, contract and roster rules determine which league a team can enter and which players may be used.
Riot’s 2026 announcement says standard Challenger rosters use three players from the region and two global players. For the 2026 Path to Champions, EMEA teams could use players aged 16 or older and up to two imports from outside the region, subject to that event’s rules. Those references describe different competition contexts, so do not automatically treat the Path to Champions limits as the roster rule for every Kickoff or Challenger stage.

Keep a substitute plan that also satisfies the same restrictions; an ineligible replacement can make a team unable to field a legal lineup even after it has qualified competitively.
2. Choose the correct EMEA Challenger territory
EMEA Challengers is divided into six listed territories:
| Territory | What an aspiring team must establish |
|---|---|
| North East | That its players satisfy the residency and registration requirements mapped to North East. |
| France | That its roster is eligible for the France competition under the current rules. |
| Spain | That its roster meets the territory’s residency and registration conditions. |
| DACH | That its players and organization meet the applicable DACH requirements. |
| Türkiye | That the roster is eligible for the Türkiye competition under the current rules. |
| MENA | That the roster is eligible for the MENA competition under the current rules. |
Riot identifies these six territories, but a territory name by itself does not tell you whether a particular player qualifies. Residency requirements can be versioned, and the territory mapped to a team’s players matters. Confirm the operative rule document before entering Premier or signing imports.

3. Begin in VALORANT Premier
Riot describes Premier as the first organized step for a team’s journey. Its 2026 season-start explanation states that “Any team can begin their journey in organized competitions within VALORANT’s Premier Mode.” Teams that win their Premier competitions can promote into their regional Challenger Leagues.

Premier therefore serves as the accessible development and promotion layer:
- Assemble five eligible starters and any permitted substitutes.
- Register for the Premier competition available to the roster’s region and division.
- Play the scheduled Premier matches and meet the competition’s participation requirements.
- Win the relevant Premier competition so the team can use the promotion route into its regional Challenger League.
A Premier title is evidence of sporting qualification for the next level, not a guaranteed invitation to VCT EMEA Kickoff. The team still has to complete Challenger registration, remain eligible and perform against established Challenger opponents.
4. Promote into and perform in Challengers EMEA
After Premier promotion, enter the Challenger League serving the territory for which the roster is eligible. This is where the organization’s results, roster compliance and administrative readiness are tested in a more formal league environment.
For the 2026 EMEA Path to Champions, Riot said points and placement from Challengers EMEA qualified the top four seeds. The exact calendar, point schedule and tie-break procedures are not permanent; Riot versions its regulations, so use the current season’s rule library rather than copying a 2026 placement threshold into a later season.
In practical terms, a team should:
- Track every match result and ranking point in the official competition system.
- Keep the starting lineup and substitutes compliant whenever the rules require a roster submission or lock.
- Prepare for travel, match-day operations, broadcast obligations and any anti-cheat or integrity checks imposed by the league.
- Review tie-break and qualification language before the final stage, because a raw win total may not be the only ranking factor.
5. Reach the VCT league or the applicable promotion route
Kickoff participation followed league-level team selection. The 2026 field demonstrates the outcome: ten partner teams were joined by two teams promoted through the previous Ascension system. A new organization therefore needed to reach the VCT ecosystem through partnership, promotion or another route explicitly provided by that season’s rules.

Do not describe a Challenger win as an automatic 2026 Kickoff invitation. It was an upstream route toward VCT-level eligibility. The final team list depended on the league structure in force for that season.
Was there an EMEA Kickoff open qualifier in 2026?
No public player registration or standalone EMEA Kickoff open qualifier was part of the 2026 field described by Riot’s official primer. An individual could not buy a place, click into the bracket or qualify simply by being a Premier participant.
The two non-partner places in the 2026 field came from the prior Ascension system. That is different from an open sign-up: Ascension was a competitive promotion pathway that produced teams eligible for the VCT-level event.
For 2027, Riot announced four Open Qualifier teams in the Kickoff field. That creates a possible direct tournament route that did not exist in the 2026 field, but the registration dates, territory allocation, roster lock and match format must be taken from the 2027 notice when published.
How the 2026 EMEA Kickoff bracket worked
The 2026 event used a triple-elimination format. A team had three lives:
- An initial loss moved the team from the Upper Bracket to the Middle Bracket.
- A second loss moved it to the Lower Bracket.
- A third loss eliminated the team.
There were three bracket finals rather than one winner-take-all Grand Final. The Upper, Middle and Lower bracket champions each qualified for Masters Santiago. Riot’s primer described this outcome as: “The champions of each bracket (Upper, Middle, and Lower) will all advance to the first international event of the year.”
Rank #4
| 2026 Kickoff element | Rule or result |
|---|---|
| Elimination system | Triple elimination; teams were eliminated after their third loss. |
| Bracket paths | Upper, Middle and Lower brackets. |
| Series before bracket finals | Best-of-three. |
| Bracket finals | Best-of-five. |
| Masters Santiago berths | One for each of the three bracket champions. |
| Champions 2025 byes | Fnatic, Team Liquid, GIANTX and Team Heretics entered Round 2 of the Upper Bracket. |
The byes were a seeding advantage for the top four teams from Champions 2025. They did not create a separate qualification method for a new organization and did not allow a Premier team to skip the ecosystem route.

Masters qualification
In 2026, winning a Kickoff bracket final qualified that bracket champion for Masters Santiago. There were three qualifying teams because the Upper, Middle and Lower bracket champions each received a place. This is why “winning Kickoff” should not be reduced to a single overall champion: a team could qualify internationally by winning its assigned bracket final.
Championship Points
Kickoff also contributed Championship Points to the season-long race for Champions Shanghai. Riot Games’ 2025 points allocation was:
| Kickoff finish | Championship Points | Credited source |
|---|---|---|
| Winner | 4 | Riot Games, 2025 |
| Second place | 3 | Riot Games, 2025 |
| Third place | 2 | Riot Games, 2025 |
| Fourth place | 1 | Riot Games, 2025 |
Riot’s primer said the two EMEA teams with the most points at the end of the season qualified for Champions Shanghai. Stage 2 placement was another Champions route under the 2026 season structure, so a Kickoff result was important but was not the only way to reach Champions.
What changes for the 2027 Kickoff model
Riot’s June 2026 announcement describes a new access model for 2027: eight partner teams plus four teams from Open Qualifiers. It also says the top three teams from each territory qualify for Masters. Because that announcement changes the entry source, a team planning for 2027 should not reuse the 2026 assumption that every place is reserved for partner or Ascension teams.

The four Open Qualifier slots are the key practical difference for an aspiring organization. They may provide a direct entry competition, but they do not remove roster, residency, age, contract or registration requirements.

A season-by-season qualification checklist
Before committing to a roster
- Identify the EMEA territory that matches the players’ documented residency.
- Check the current age threshold and import limit for the exact competition, not a similarly named event.
- Confirm that every starter and substitute can sign and compete under Riot’s contract and roster rules.
- Budget for league administration, travel and match operations rather than only player salaries.
While competing in Premier
- Use the official Premier registration window and competition assigned to the roster’s region.
- Keep the same eligibility records ready for promotion paperwork.
- Track the result that triggers promotion; a general Premier win is not automatically a VCT invitation.
After promotion to Challengers
- Complete Challenger registration for the correct territory.
- Monitor points, placement and tie-break rules throughout the stage.
- Review every roster change against the current league rule version before playing the player.
- Prepare for the performance level and operational demands of a formal league.
When planning for Kickoff
- Determine whether the season uses partner places, Ascension promotion, Open Qualifiers or a combination.
- Find the official registration notice before announcing a roster or booking travel.
- Read the bracket, match-length, seeding and Masters-qualification provisions for that season.
- Separate the path to Masters from the separate Championship Points race for Champions.
Common qualification mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming Premier is the Kickoff application
Premier is the beginning of the organized pathway. In 2026 it did not provide a direct Kickoff registration. Treating a Premier championship as a guaranteed VCT place can lead an organization to miss the Challenger promotion and roster-compliance steps that follow.
Using the wrong territory
EMEA is not one undivided Challenger league. North East, France, Spain, DACH, Türkiye and MENA have territory-specific eligibility requirements. A roster built for one territory may not qualify for another, particularly when players have different residency statuses.
Carrying rules from one event into another
The three-regional-player, two-global-player description for standard Challenger rosters and the 16-plus, up-to-two-import description for the 2026 Path to Champions are not a universal rule for every stage. Always read the rule set attached to the registration you are entering.

Confusing a seeding bye with qualification
Fnatic, Team Liquid, GIANTX and Team Heretics started in Round 2 of the 2026 Upper Bracket because of their Champions 2025 results. That advantage did not create a route around VCT eligibility and was not available as a general Premier reward.
Confusing Masters and Champions qualification
The 2026 bracket champions qualified for Masters Santiago. Championship Points from Kickoff contributed to the later Champions Shanghai race, where the two highest-point EMEA teams qualified according to Riot’s primer. These are separate outcomes with separate criteria.
Planning against an outdated format
The 2027 announcement introduces four Open Qualifier teams, while the 2026 field did not use that public-entry model. Before spending money on a roster, confirm the current season’s access source, number of places, residency rules, bracket format, Masters route and Championship Points schedule.
Bottom line for an aspiring EMEA organization
For the completed 2026 season, the reliable route was organization and eligible roster, Premier, promotion into the correct Challenger territory, strong Challengers EMEA results and progression into the VCT league or its promotion system. There was no individual 2026 Kickoff sign-up. Riot’s 2027 structure adds four Open Qualifier places, so a future team may have a more direct tournament entry route, but only the current season’s registration notice and rules can establish exactly how to use it.
