WordPress’s built-in maintenance mode shows visitors a maintenance response during updates; it is not a general switch that guarantees forms, orders, APIs, scheduled tasks, and other site features cannot save changes. For a true read-only maintenance window, you must identify and block the write paths used by your site, then test that they are blocked.
Choose the kind of maintenance window you need
For routine WordPress core, plugin, or theme updates, the built-in maintenance response may be enough to tell visitors to return later. If your requirement is that no public changes can be saved, treat that as a separate write-freeze task. Seeing a maintenance page does not prove that every route into the site is read-only.
- Visitor notice: You want visitors to see a maintenance response while the team carries out updates.
- Write freeze: You need to prevent submissions or other changes from being saved. The method depends on your site’s plugins, integrations, and hosting setup.
Turn on WordPress maintenance mode with WP-CLI
If WP-CLI is available, run these commands from the relevant WordPress installation context. The status command reports maintenance-mode status; it does not test every application write path.
- Check the current state:
wp maintenance-mode status - Activate maintenance mode:
wp maintenance-mode activate - Carry out your planned maintenance and check the visitor response and the administrative access your team needs.
- Deactivate maintenance mode:
wp maintenance-mode deactivate - Verify it is off:
wp maintenance-mode status, then review the site as a visitor.
For a site installed outside the current directory, WP-CLI supports the global --path=<path> parameter. On multisite, --url=<url> selects the target site. See the WP-CLI maintenance-mode command reference.

What WordPress’s built-in mode does—and does not do
WordPress core uses a .maintenance file in the installation root. Its $upgrading timestamp is treated as active only while it is less than 10 minutes old. The upgrader creates or removes this file as part of its maintenance process. That time limit is part of core’s temporary upgrade mechanism, not a lasting read-only policy. See WordPress’s maintenance-mode function reference.
When active, the standard maintenance response sends HTTP 503 and a Retry-After: 600 header. The response can use a wp-content/maintenance.php drop-in for a custom visitor message. WordPress’s default message is “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.” These response details describe what visitors are served; they do not establish that every form, checkout, API, or integration is prevented from writing data. See the core maintenance-response reference.

Plan and verify a genuine write freeze
There is no universal core control documented for blocking every application-specific write route. Before promising that a site is read-only, inventory the ways this installation accepts changes. Depending on the site, these may include:
- Account or profile updates and comments
- Contact forms and other public submissions
- Ecommerce orders, payments, or bookings
- API integrations, imports, and connected services
- Scheduled tasks that update site data
Coordinate with the people responsible for the application and hosting to block writes at a layer that covers the routes you identified. Then use a safe test plan to submit test changes through those routes and check that they are not saved. The exact implementation depends on the site; WordPress’s maintenance-mode commands do not verify it for you. Some server configuration and file permissions are managed by the host, so contact the hosting provider if you do not control the required settings. See WordPress’s file-permissions guidance.

Show visitors a branded maintenance page on a block theme
A July 13, 2026 article on the WordPress Developer Blog describes a block-theme approach using a theme hook and a Maintenance template created in the Site Editor. In its example, logged-in users bypass the template while visitors see the maintenance page. The article also demonstrates a Retry-After: 3600 header and cache-control behavior. This changes the visitor experience and access scope; it is not presented as a general write lock.
Clear a maintenance notice left behind after an upgrade
If an upgrade fails and the scheduled-maintenance message remains, WordPress’s troubleshooting guidance says to remove the .maintenance file from the site root. First confirm that no upgrade is still in progress; removing the file while maintenance work is underway can expose visitors to an unfinished change. See WordPress’s troubleshooting documentation.
