Use an encoder such as OBS to combine the prerecorded tour and a QR code, then send the composed scene to YouTube Live. In OBS, add the tour as a Media Source, place a QR image or Browser Source above it, and check the actual YouTube preview—including on a phone—before the event.
Choose how the QR code will appear
Decide first where the code should lead and whether it needs to stay on screen throughout the tour or appear at particular moments. The destination could be a property listing or an information page; confirm that it is correct and accessible before broadcast. YouTube does not generate the QR code for you.

These options change how you display or manage the code; none guarantees that viewers will scan it. The available platform and OBS documentation does not establish a universal QR pixel size, viewing distance, or on-screen dwell time.
Build the tour-and-QR scene in OBS
- Create a scene. In OBS, create a scene for the property tour.
- Add the recording. In the scene’s Sources panel, use the add button and select Media Source. Choose the tour file and confirm it plays and its audio is correct. Check any playback or looping setting appropriate to your event; do not assume a short recording will automatically fill a longer broadcast.
- Add the QR. Add the exported QR graphic as an Image Source. If using a webpage overlay, add it as a Browser Source instead.
- Set the layer order and placement. In Sources, move the QR source above the Media Source; higher sources appear above lower ones. Resize and position it so it remains legible without covering essential property details, room labels, or other identifying tour content. OBS documents media, image, text, and browser sources and their ordering in its Sources Guide.
- Check the full composition. Play the scene from beginning to end, including any planned QR appearances. Confirm that the code is not cropped, hidden by scene transitions, or lost against changing footage, and that the destination opens correctly when scanned from a test display.
Connect OBS to a YouTube Live event
- Confirm live-stream eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel without live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until event day. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and choose encoder streaming. YouTube identifies encoders as the route for streams that need overlays and other production elements. Follow the current Studio prompts for the event.
- Copy the stream URL and key into OBS. Enter the connection details from YouTube in OBS’s stream settings, following YouTube’s current encoder instructions. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in a screen share or public recording, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Set and verify the encoder output. Choose a resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval that are supported by YouTube and appropriate for the source footage and available upload connection. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than copying a value from an unrelated setup; the right settings depend on resolution, frame rate, and connection stability.
Preview and test the encoded stream before the event
Seeing the scene on the OBS canvas is not enough: the code must remain readable in the encoded stream and on viewers’ devices. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder well ahead of the event, starting it before the scheduled time, and checking the Live Control Room preview and stream health.

- Start the encoder feed and wait for the YouTube Live Control Room preview.
- Inspect the QR in that preview while the tour plays, including against bright, dark, and visually busy footage.
- Scan the code from a phone displaying the actual YouTube preview or an unlisted test stream. Confirm that it reaches the intended page.
- Test at representative playback sizes and on common phones. YouTube transcodes streams for different devices and network conditions, so an OBS preview alone cannot establish how the code will look to every viewer.
- Check representative video and audio and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators before you start the public event.
There is no documented universal size or scan-success guarantee for a QR in YouTube Live. Make the code as clear as the composition allows, then rely on testing the actual output rather than assuming a particular pixel measurement will work for everyone.
Start, monitor, and end the broadcast
- Once the Live Control Room preview and phone scan pass, start the event according to YouTube Studio’s prompts.
- Watch the stream-health status and confirm the tour continues to play as intended. If the QR is timed, verify its appearances during the broadcast.
- End the stream using the event and encoder controls for your workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat that as a substitute for keeping your own source recording.
Check property footage and other rights
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the content provider to hold the rights needed for the live content and to follow Community Guidelines and applicable law. Before streaming, confirm that you have permission for the property footage, any music, people shown, and other third-party material. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.

Troubleshooting common QR and stream problems
