Use a layered plan: keep emergency and near-term cash in an accessible FDIC-insured deposit account, reserve CDs for money you can leave until specific maturity dates, consider Series I bonds only for funds that can remain untouched for at least one year, and use TIPS for longer horizons where market-price fluctuations are acceptable. This U.S.-specific approach protects access first, then addresses the risk that inflation reduces purchasing power.
Why changing rates and inflation can hurt savings
Your account balance can rise while your spending power falls. If the return on cash is below inflation, each dollar buys less in the future. The SEC describes this as the risk that “inflation will outpace and erode returns over time.” A useful first check is to compare the account’s annual percentage yield (APY) with the inflation rate over the same period; the difference is an approximate real return before taxes and fees.
Interest-rate changes affect products differently. A variable-rate savings account can reprice as banks change their offers. A fixed-rate CD keeps its stated rate until maturity, but you may be unable to access the money without a penalty. A marketable Treasury security can change in market value every trading day even when its promised cash flows are unchanged. Inflation-linked securities adjust in different ways and on different schedules, so no single product solves every savings need.
The Federal Reserve, FDIC and OCC state that “effective interest-rate risk management is an essential component of safe and sound banking practices.” For an individual, that means matching each dollar to a time horizon and a tolerable amount of access, rate and price risk rather than selecting an account solely because its advertised yield is highest today.

Start with an accessible emergency reserve
Use an FDIC-insured deposit category
Emergency money belongs in a deposit account you can reach without selling an investment. FDIC-insured categories include savings accounts, money-market deposit accounts and certificates of deposit at participating banks. Coverage is subject to the applicable ownership category and institution limits, so confirm that the bank is insured and that all accounts you own there are counted correctly.
FDIC insurance does not cover Treasury bills, notes or bonds, mutual funds, stocks, annuities or crypto assets. A money-market deposit account at an insured bank is different from a money-market mutual fund held through a brokerage account; the latter is not an FDIC-insured deposit.
Choose access rules before comparing APYs
- Keep the amount needed for unexpected bills in an account with straightforward withdrawals and no maturity date.
- Check whether the bank limits transfers, imposes withdrawal fees or requires a minimum balance.
- Compare APY, not just the nominal rate, and read whether the rate is promotional or can change at any time.
- Verify FDIC coverage for the ownership category and the combined balance at that institution.
Deposit rates can move after you open an account. Review the APY and access terms periodically instead of assuming that today’s top rate will remain available.

Use CDs for money with a known future date
What a CD changes
A certificate of deposit exchanges some liquidity for a stated term and rate. You agree to leave the principal until the maturity date; withdrawing earlier can trigger the issuer’s penalty. A CD can therefore fit a planned expense whose date is reasonably certain, but not an emergency reserve.
Build a ladder instead of one large maturity
A ladder divides money among CDs that mature at different times. An illustrative structure might place separate amounts in three-, six-, nine- and 12-month terms. When the shortest CD matures, you can use that cash or reinvest it into a new rung. The exact terms should follow your expense calendar, not a generic schedule.

- List the amount and date of each planned withdrawal.
- Keep the amount needed before the first maturity in an accessible insured deposit account.
- Assign only surplus cash to CD rungs whose maturity dates precede the expenses they are meant to fund.
- At each maturity, compare current APYs, your next cash need and the penalty for choosing a longer term before reinvesting.
A ladder spreads maturity dates, but it does not eliminate reinvestment risk: a matured CD may have to be replaced at a lower rate. It also does not guarantee that the interest earned will exceed inflation.
Read the maturity and call language
The SEC advises confirming the maturity date in writing because CDs can be more complex than their advertisements suggest. A callable CD gives the issuing bank the right to terminate the CD after a specified period. In the SEC’s words, “If interest rates fall, the issuing bank might call the CD.” You could then receive your principal back when comparable new rates are less attractive. Before buying, identify the first call date, all call windows, the maturity date and the early-withdrawal penalty.

How the composite rate works
A Series I bond combines a fixed rate with an inflation rate based on changes in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U). The inflation component resets every six months. The fixed component is set when the bond is issued and remains part of that bond’s formula, while the inflation component changes with the Treasury’s published schedule.
For bonds issued from May 1 through October 31, 2026, the U.S. Treasury Fiscal Service reports a 4.26% composite rate, including a 0.90% fixed-rate component. That is an issue-period fact, not a promise that every I bond will earn 4.26% permanently; the inflation component will reset for future six-month periods.
Respect the liquidity rules
- TreasuryDirect states that an I bond cannot be redeemed during its first year. It is therefore unsuitable for an emergency fund or an expense due within 12 months.
- If you redeem before holding it for five years, you forfeit the most recent three months of interest.
- The annual electronic purchase maximum is $10,000 per person.
These rules make I bonds a possible inflation-aware allocation for money that can remain invested for at least one year, not a replacement for cash you may need tomorrow. Check the issue-period composite rate and Treasury purchase terms when you buy; neither the quoted rate nor your future inflation component is permanent.

Use TIPS for longer horizons, not emergency cash
Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) are marketable Treasury securities whose principal is adjusted with inflation. Unlike an I bond, a TIPS can be bought or sold before maturity at a market price. That price can rise or fall as real interest rates, expected inflation and market demand change. Selling before maturity can therefore produce a gain or loss even when the inflation adjustment is working as designed.

Decide how much to lock up
Use the date of each liability as the organizing principle. A dollar needed soon should not depend on a favorable interest-rate forecast or a sale at a favorable market price.
Money needed now through the next year
Keep emergency reserves, rent or mortgage buffers, insurance deductibles and other near-term obligations in accessible FDIC-insured deposits. If an I bond has not completed its one-year holding period, it cannot serve this role.
Money needed after a known date
Use CD maturities that precede the spending date, leaving enough time for settlement and transfers. A ladder can reduce the chance that all of the money is locked until one inconvenient day, but retain a liquid buffer for an earlier-than-expected bill.

Money that can remain invested for several years
Evaluate I bonds within the annual electronic limit when their holding rules fit your plan. For longer horizons, compare TIPS with your broader investment allocation and accept that their market value may be below your purchase price on a particular day.
There is no universal percentage that belongs in each bucket. The right split depends on income stability, upcoming expenses, insurance deductibles and how much volatility you can tolerate without selling at the wrong time.
A practical sequence for changing-rate environments
- Set the reserve. Put the emergency amount in an accessible FDIC-insured deposit account and verify the ownership and institution coverage.
- Map the calendar. Divide planned expenses by date and keep each amount liquid until it is safe to commit it to a maturity.
- Construct CD rungs. Use only money that can remain invested through each maturity, and document penalties and call provisions.
- Evaluate I bonds. For funds that can stay untouched at least one year, check the current composite rate, the $10,000 electronic annual limit and the five-year penalty rule.
- Evaluate TIPS for longer goals. Use a taxable or other appropriate investment account only after considering market-price risk and the maturity that matches your horizon.
- Recheck before committing. Confirm APYs, Treasury issue-period rates, insurance coverage, tax rules and every CD’s call and early-withdrawal language.
What to do as rates and inflation move
When market rates are rising
Variable-rate deposits may become more competitive, while a long fixed CD prevents you from earning the newly available rate until maturity. Keep the ladder’s staggered dates and avoid locking money needed before the next rung. Compare the benefit of a higher fixed rate with the cost of losing access.
When market rates are falling
A fixed CD can preserve its stated rate, but a callable CD may be terminated by the bank after its call date. Reinvestment at maturity may also occur at a lower rate. Read the call language before treating a high quoted yield as guaranteed for the entire term.

Reassess whether deposit APYs are keeping pace with purchasing-power losses. I bonds’ inflation component is designed to reset with CPI-U changes, while TIPS adjust principal but can still lose market value before maturity. Keep the liquidity bucket separate so an inflation hedge does not become an emergency-sale risk.

When inflation cools
The variable component of a future I-bond composite rate can decline when measured inflation declines. A bond’s fixed component does not change, but the composite result for later periods can differ from the issue-period figure. For TIPS, market prices will reflect changing real-rate and inflation expectations, so the price you see before maturity may not track the latest inflation reading one-for-one.
Tax and account-location checks
Tax treatment differs among bank interest, CDs, I bonds and TIPS, and it can also depend on whether the holding is in a taxable account or another account type. Confirm current federal and state rules, reporting requirements and any benefit-specific eligibility with the IRS or a qualified tax professional before making a purchase. Do not choose an instrument solely because its headline rate is higher if its after-tax result does not meet the goal.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Putting every dollar in the highest advertised APY: Separate emergency liquidity from money that can be locked up, then compare access rules and coverage.
- Treating an I bond as cash: Keep a separate reserve because redemption is unavailable for one year and early redemption before five years costs the latest three months of interest.
- Assuming all Treasury products are interchangeable: I bonds follow Treasury redemption rules; TIPS trade at market prices. Choose based on the date you may need the money.
- Ignoring callable-CD language: Record the first call date and ask what happens if the issuer ends the CD early.
- Building a ladder with the wrong dates: Tie each maturity to an actual expense and leave a liquid buffer for timing changes.
- Forgetting insurance boundaries: Confirm that the account is an FDIC-insured deposit and that balances at the same institution are counted under the correct ownership category.
- Assuming today’s rate is a forecast: Treat the 4.26% I-bond composite rate for May 1–October 31, 2026, as an issue-period rate, not a permanent return.
Review the plan on a regular schedule
At least when a CD matures, an I-bond issue period changes or your household income and expenses change, run this checklist:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Is the emergency reserve still large enough for your current essential expenses?
- Are all deposit accounts still within the bank and ownership-category insurance limits?
- Do upcoming expenses line up with CD maturities, or is any cash locked beyond its need date?
- Have APYs, early-withdrawal penalties or callable terms changed on accounts you are considering?
- Would a new I-bond purchase fit the one-year holding rule, five-year penalty rule and $10,000 electronic annual limit?
- Does any TIPS position mature near the goal date, and can you tolerate its market value before then?
- Have you checked current tax treatment rather than relying on an older account statement or advertisement?
Maintaining these separate buckets lets you respond to rate and inflation changes without forcing an emergency withdrawal, a costly CD break or an untimely sale of a marketable Treasury security.
