Protect your financial data by sharing as little as possible, checking an AI advisor’s privacy and account-linking terms before connecting anything, and verifying important answers through an official financial institution or qualified adviser. Treat prompts, uploaded files, and chat histories as sensitive records: don’t enter passwords, one-time codes, Social Security numbers, or full account and card numbers unless there is a clear, necessary reason and you understand how the service handles them.
What financial information should you keep out of an AI chat?
Assume that anything you type, upload, or leave in a chat history may become part of a sensitive record. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says personal and financial information in chatbot logs deserves protection. Its 2023 report also identifies privacy and data-security risks associated with financial chatbots: CFPB, Chatbots in consumer finance.
Use data minimization: provide only what is needed to get a useful answer. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) likewise advises businesses to collect only necessary information, protect it, and dispose of it securely. For consumers, the practical lesson is to remove details that do not affect the question.
Do not share high-risk details casually
- Passwords, PINs, recovery codes, or one-time verification codes.
- Full bank, brokerage, or payment-card numbers.
- Your Social Security number or other government identifiers.
- Unredacted statements, tax forms, or screenshots containing names, addresses, account identifiers, or transaction details.
If a question can be answered with an approximate balance, a broad spending category, or a fictional example, use that instead of identifying information. Redact unnecessary details from documents before uploading them. Never treat a chatbot request for credentials or a verification code as a routine step.

How to check an AI advisor before using it
Use the service’s verified official app or website, reached independently rather than through an unexpected message or search ad. The CFPB warns that impersonation chatbots can be used for phishing. If a chatbot unexpectedly asks for credentials, payment, or sensitive details, stop and verify the request using a known official channel. This is a precaution based on the documented impersonation risk, not a claim that every such request is fraudulent.
Before entering financial information, find and review the provider’s privacy notice, data controls, and support options. The CFPB has documented chatbot risks, but does not certify or rank named AI advisors. Compare the service’s stated practices rather than assuming that an AI label means a particular level of protection.

- Data requested: What information does the service ask for, and can you use it without linking an account?
- Purpose and sharing: Does it explain how prompts and financial data are used, including whether they may be used to improve the service or shared with other parties?
- Retention and deletion: How long does it keep chats or connected data, and how can you request access or deletion?
- Security and third parties: What does it say about safeguarding information, and which providers or other parties may receive it?
- Permissions and recourse: Can you limit or revoke access? How do you reach a person or report an error, unauthorized access, or dispute?
Save a copy of relevant privacy terms and note the permissions you grant. Those records can help you understand what you authorized if you later need to ask the provider or financial institution to investigate. Privacy and security practices vary by service; the CFPB’s principles for consumer-authorized data sharing are useful evaluation criteria, not a guarantee that every product offers the same controls.
Should you connect a bank or brokerage account?
Only connect an account if the feature is necessary for the task and the provider clearly explains the data involved and how to control the connection. Before approving access, check what information is requested, what it will be used for, who may receive it, how long it is retained, and how to limit or revoke permissions. If those terms are unclear, skip the connection and use a less detailed prompt.

The CFPB’s consumer-authorized data-sharing principles emphasize consumer control, transparency, informed consent, security, data accuracy, accountability, and dispute resolution. They explain what to look for when evaluating a connection; they do not establish identical revocation tools or practices across services. See the CFPB’s 2017 data-sharing principles.
If you are concerned after connecting an account, revoke access through the AI provider and through your financial institution where possible. Then contact the institution using its official channel, especially if you see activity you do not recognize. Available controls differ, so check both parties’ instructions rather than assuming one revocation action ends every connection.

How to verify financial advice and handle problems
Do not rely on an AI answer alone for decisions with meaningful financial or legal consequences. Check factual claims against primary sources—such as your financial institution’s official policies, government guidance, or the relevant account documents—or consult a qualified human adviser. Chatbot answers can be inaccurate, and the CFPB says effectiveness can decline on complex problems.
For urgent account access issues, suspected fraud, disputes, or a problem that the chatbot cannot resolve, move to the financial institution or a human professional through a verified official channel. The CFPB’s 2023 report advises financial institutions not to use chatbots as the primary way to interact with people when it is reasonably clear the chatbot cannot meet their needs. That statement is directed at financial institutions; it is not a certification of standalone AI tools or a promise that every provider must offer the same support.

What U.S. rules apply to AI financial services?
Do not assume every general-purpose AI chatbot is legally treated as a financial institution. FTC guidance on the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act describes obligations for covered financial institutions, including explaining certain information-sharing practices and safeguarding sensitive information; applicability depends on the entity and circumstances. The FTC’s GLBA compliance guide explains the scope and related notice and opt-out duties.
Rule status can change. As of the CFPB’s page last modified January 6, 2026, compliance dates for its Personal Financial Data Rights Rule had been stayed by a court on October 29, 2025; the page also reports an August 22, 2025 advance notice of proposed rulemaking. Do not treat implementation dates as settled. Check the CFPB’s Personal Financial Data Rights page for updates and applicable court developments.
Why caution matters as AI use grows
The CFPB estimated that about 37% of the U.S. population interacted with a bank chatbot in 2022. Its 2023 report projected 110.9 million bank chatbot users by 2026; that figure is a projection, not a measured current count. The report also describes a 2018 Ticketmaster UK incident involving malicious code targeting a conversational-AI service, which it said affected 9.4 million data subjects, including 60,000 individual payment-card details. These historical figures provide context, not a measure of the security of any particular AI advisor today.
