Firefox Relay lets you sign up with a forwarding address, or “mask,” instead of giving a website the email address you use personally. Messages sent to the mask can still reach your inbox, while the site does not see your real address. You can create masks in Firefox or from the Relay dashboard, then turn off or delete a mask if it starts receiving unwanted mail.
How Firefox Relay protects your email address
A Relay mask is a forwarding address linked to your real email address. When a company sends a message to the mask, Relay forwards it to the inbox associated with your account. The company sees the mask, not your real address. Mozilla describes masks as a way to reduce unwanted mail and limit the impact if an address is exposed or shared: Mozilla’s explanation of email and phone masks.
A mask does not make spam impossible. Messages can continue to reach you through it until you disable forwarding or delete the mask. Using a different mask for each signup also makes it easier to identify which account is sending unwanted messages and cut off that route.
Set up Firefox Relay and create a mask
- Sign in to a Mozilla account. Open Mozilla’s Relay activation guide and follow its instructions to activate the service.
- Complete the forwarding check. During activation, create a mask and confirm that Relay can forward mail to your real inbox.
- Generate a mask for a signup. On a website’s email field, Firefox may offer a Relay mask. Select the suggestion and use that address in the site’s form. If no suggestion appears, open the Relay dashboard, create a mask, and copy it into the form. Mozilla’s mask creation instructions cover the dashboard option.
- Use a separate mask where practical. Give each account its own address rather than reusing one mask for unrelated sites. Keep track of which mask belongs to which signup so you can disable the right one if it attracts unwanted mail.
Firefox’s email-field suggestion will not appear on every site. The dashboard remains an option when a page does not offer a mask prompt. Free masks and Relay Premium
Mozilla’s activation and creation help pages currently describe the free tier as allowing up to 50 masks. Premium offers unlimited masks and promotional-email filtering. Availability and features can vary by country, so check Mozilla’s current Relay offer for your location before choosing a plan.

Premium’s promotional filter uses email header metadata to identify marketing messages. It can forward messages such as receipts, password resets, and confirmations while blocking promotional mail. Because a wanted message could be classified as promotional, check the mask’s filtering setting and your inbox’s spam folder if an expected message does not arrive. When to use a mask—and when not to
Masks are useful for lower-stakes signups, such as shopping accounts, apps, and websites you do not fully trust. They help keep your everyday address private and give you a way to cut off mail from one signup without changing your main address.
For important or identity-verified contact, use an address you monitor directly. Mozilla advises against relying on masks for communications with a bank, doctor, or lawyer, or for messages where attachments matter. Its examples include concert and flight boarding passes. Some websites may also reject masked addresses, so use your regular address if a signup will not accept a mask or if missing the message would create a serious problem.

Stop unwanted messages from a mask
You can temporarily disable forwarding for a mask and turn it back on later, or delete the mask permanently. Use the Relay dashboard’s controls for the mask you want to manage. Mozilla explains the available controls in its email-forwarding guide.
Be careful about marking a forwarded message as spam in your email app: Mozilla says doing so automatically disables forwarding for that mask. That affects all mail sent to it, including messages you want, such as receipts and account notices. If you need the mask again, re-enable its forwarding in the Relay dashboard.
