For sensitive Telegram conversations, start a Secret Chat: Telegram’s regular Cloud Chats are not end-to-end encrypted. Signal and Telegram Secret Chats both use end-to-end encryption, but neither can protect messages on an unlocked or compromised device, or stop a recipient from copying them. Secure the account and device, verify the connection when it matters, and use disappearing messages only to limit retained history.
Know which Telegram chat is end-to-end encrypted
Signal’s official safety-number guidance describes secure one-to-one messages and calls. Telegram has two different chat modes, so the word “private” alone does not tell you whether a conversation is end-to-end encrypted.

Secure your Signal account and verify important conversations
Harden account access
- Enable Signal two-step verification with registration lock. Keep control of the phone number used to start the account, and never share SMS verification codes, your Signal PIN, or recovery keys.
- Review the linked-device list and remove devices you do not recognize.
- Keep Signal and your phone or computer operating system updated. Signal’s recommendations are in How to protect yourself on Signal.
Compare safety numbers through another channel
For a sensitive one-to-one chat, open its chat settings and view the safety number. Compare it with the contact through a trusted, separate channel—ideally in person. Signal explains that a safety number lets contacts verify the security of their messages and calls, but “This does not verify anyone’s identity.” It does not establish that the person behind the account is who they claim to be.

If a safety number changes unexpectedly or frequently, check with the contact through that separate channel rather than treating the change alone as proof of an attack. Also review who can discover you by phone number and whether you want to use a username. Be cautious with message requests: Signal does not verify profile names or identities.
Lock down Telegram and choose the right session
Set account and app protections
In Telegram, open Settings > Privacy and Security and enable Two-Step Verification, then set a strong app passcode. Telegram’s two-step login requires an SMS code plus an additional password; an optional recovery email is available. Telegram also documents passkeys as a login option. Labels and feature availability can vary by app version and platform, so follow the current in-app prompts.

Verify a Secret Chat’s encryption key
Compare the key visualization shown in a Secret Chat with the other person over a known secure channel, ideally in person. Telegram’s FAQ describes this comparison as a way to check against a man-in-the-middle attack. It verifies the connection you are comparing; it does not independently establish the other person’s real-world identity.
Act if a phone is lost
Telegram warns that it cannot protect messages from someone with physical or root access to a device, or from someone using an unlocked phone. If a device is lost, enable Two-Step Verification and, where possible, terminate the old session from another active device. See the Telegram FAQ for its account-security guidance.

Use disappearing messages for retention, not secrecy
Timers can reduce how long message history remains on devices, but they cannot stop someone from saving a message. A recipient can copy content or photograph the screen with another device.
Signal timer behavior
Signal’s disappearing-message timer applies to messages sent after the timer is set or changed. For a sent message, the countdown begins after sending; for a received message, it begins after reading. Choose a timer as a history-retention setting, not a guarantee that the recipient cannot keep a copy. See Signal’s timer guidance.

Telegram Secret Chat timer behavior
In a Secret Chat, the self-destruct timer applies only to messages sent after the timer is set. Screenshot alerts are not dependable on all supported systems, and an external camera can still record the screen. Do not send sensitive information to someone you do not trust; Telegram’s FAQ explains the timer and screenshot limitations.

- For end-to-end encryption in Telegram: start a Secret Chat, not a Cloud Chat.
- For cross-device Telegram history: Cloud Chats sync across devices, but use client-server/server-client encryption rather than end-to-end encryption.
- For account protection: use Signal registration lock and check linked devices; use Telegram Two-Step Verification, an app passcode, and active-session controls.
- For connection checks: compare Signal safety numbers or Telegram Secret Chat key visualizations through a trusted separate channel. Neither mechanism proves a contact’s real-world identity.
- For a compromised endpoint: encryption in the app is not enough. Someone with access to an unlocked or compromised device may see messages. Keep devices updated and physically secure.
Telegram’s Secret Chats can also re-key under protocol-defined conditions; the official Perfect Forward Secrecy documentation describes those conditions. This protocol behavior does not remove the need to protect devices and accounts.
