A case with a raised edge around the camera is the simplest everyday way to reduce contact with tables and other flat surfaces. For cleaning, use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth—not abrasive polish or household cleaners. A separate lens protector is optional and is not established as a way to prevent discoloration. Choose any accessory for your exact iPhone model.
What can protect the camera bump during everyday use?
Use a case with a raised camera edge
A raised perimeter helps keep the camera area from resting directly against flat surfaces. Belkin says its raised camera edges elevate lenses to help reduce everyday scratches, while Mous describes its raised edge as protection against everyday scratches and minor damage—not extreme drops. These are manufacturers’ product claims, not independent comparative tests. A raised edge can reduce contact, but it does not make the camera bump scratch-proof or guarantee protection from drops.
Check that the case is made for your exact iPhone model. Camera layouts and dimensions vary, and a case designed for another model may not fit or protect the camera area as intended.
Decide whether a separate lens protector suits your needs
A lens protector covers the lenses directly; a raised case edge instead creates clearance around the camera area. They are different approaches, and neither should be assumed to prevent discoloration of the surrounding bump finish. OtterBox lists a glass camera lens protector for iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus and claims scratch and dust defense. Its product page showed the item out of stock when accessed.

Before buying a lens cover, verify the exact model fit and whether it works with your case and other accessories. An added layer sits over the camera lenses, so consider whether it could affect images; the cited product information does not establish image-quality effects, and no independent comparison is available here. A lens protector is a choice, not a required upgrade.
How should you clean the camera area?
- Power down and disconnect cables where appropriate. Follow Apple’s cleaning guidance for your iPhone model.
- Remove loose dust gently. Avoid rubbing grit across the camera area.
- Wipe with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. A lens cloth or microfiber cloth is suitable. Apple warns that cleaning products and abrasive materials can diminish the phone’s coating and may scratch it.
Avoid abrasive polishing, household cleaning products, and compressed air. Apple’s guidance includes limited, model-specific exceptions for disinfection; do not treat those exceptions as permission to use cleaners on every iPhone finish or camera surface.

Could the mark be transfer or a temporary color change?
Not every mark that looks like a scratch is necessarily damage. Apple says material transfer from items such as denim or other pocket contents may resemble a scratch on textured glass or Ceramic Shield and can be removed in most cases. Start with the gentle cloth method rather than trying to polish the surface. This note applies to the finishes Apple names; it does not identify every mark on every camera bump.
Apple also says skin oil may temporarily alter the color of the outside band on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Wiping that band with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth restores its original look, according to Apple. This is specific to the named models and outside band; it is not a general explanation for discoloration on all iPhones.

Can magnets near the camera cause problems?
Keep strong magnets or magnetisable metal away from the rear camera where practical. Apple warns that these accessories can affect sensors used for optical image stabilisation and autofocus. This is camera-function guidance, not a scratch-prevention measure.
