You can use a relative’s experience as the basis for an AI-assisted lesson, but first decide whether the real story is necessary, agree on what may be used, and check how the AI tool handles prompts. Removing a name is not enough to make a story anonymous: dates, locations, relationships, rare events, and what an audience already knows can identify someone. A safer approach is to share only the details needed, review the generated material for clues and errors, and limit who can see it.
Start by deciding whether you need the real story
Write down the learning objective before entering anything into an AI tool. Ask whether a fictional, composite, or substantially generalised example could teach the same point. If it can, use that instead. A relative’s experience should not be used merely because it is compelling or readily available.
This is a practical way to reduce the chance of harm: the less personal detail you use, the less there is to expose or infer. UNESCO’s guidance on generative AI in education calls for a human-centred approach and protection of data privacy: UNESCO guidance on generative AI in education and research.
Agree on the use before sharing details
Explain the plan in plain language before you put the story into an AI tool. Tell your relative what you want to create, which tool or workflow you intend to use, who will see the material, and whether it may be published or reused. Explain that the tool may process the prompt. Ask which details they consider private and what they do not want included.

If they refuse, are unsure, or cannot meaningfully agree, do not treat silence as permission. Use a fictional or substantially changed scenario instead. For a child or a person who cannot meaningfully agree, involve the appropriate parent, guardian, or responsible decision-maker and follow applicable local law and policy.
In UK education settings, Department for Education guidance says schools and colleges should make sure pupils and parents or guardians understand AI processing and seek agreement when personal data is used in an AI tool. The precise legal basis and duties depend on the context; this education guidance is not a universal rule for every personal project. Remove details the lesson does not need
Use the minimum information needed to teach the point. Remove direct identifiers, then generalise distinctive circumstances. For example, replace an exact date with a broad period, a named town with a region, or a rare occupation with a broader description. Avoid including private facts that do not materially improve the learning material.
- Names and contact details
- Precise dates, addresses, or locations
- Unusual jobs, events, or family relationships
- Health, financial, or other sensitive details that are not essential to the lesson
Assess details in combination, not just one by one. A common first name may seem harmless, as may a small town or a distinctive family event; together, they could point to a specific person. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) explains that anonymising qualitative material can require masking identifiers and generalising details, with careful human judgement: ICO introduction to anonymisation and ICO anonymisation techniques.

A changed name does not necessarily make a story anonymous
A pseudonym or a removed name may leave enough clues for someone who knows the family to recognise the person. Consider what the intended audience already knows and whether it could connect the remaining details to your relative. Anonymity depends on the information in context and the audience’s ability to make that connection—not just on whether a name appears.
If the person can still be identified, treat the material with safeguards appropriate for personal information. The ICO’s guidance discusses identifiability in light of information that may be linked together and the personal knowledge of those receiving it. Do not rely on an AI prompt such as “anonymise this” or a name swap as a guarantee.

Check the AI tool and account before entering the story
Privacy practices differ between services, account types, and settings, and can change. Before submitting any personal detail, check the provider’s current terms and controls for:
- Whether prompts are retained, and for how long
- Whether submitted information may be reviewed or used to improve models
- Who can access prompts, including other users or administrators
- What deletion options exist and what deletion covers
- Whether the service is approved for your school, organisation, or other setting
Prefer an organisation-approved service when one applies. Do not enter personal information unless it is necessary and permitted by relevant rules and policies. UNESCO’s privacy guidance and UK education guidance support these precautions, but neither establishes the current data practices of a particular commercial AI service. If you cannot confirm that the tool and setting protect the information adequately, use a fictionalised or generalised prompt.

Review the output before sharing it
AI can repeat supplied details, combine clues in revealing ways, or add inaccurate material. Review the finished lesson as both an educator and someone who knows the family. Check for:
- Names, places, dates, relationships, and combinations that could identify your relative
- Sensitive disclosures they did not agree to share
- New details or claims added by the AI that could be misleading or revealing
- Errors that make the teaching material inaccurate
Revise or remove anything that is unnecessary, identifying, sensitive, or inaccurate. Reconsider whether the relative—or someone who knows them—could recognise the story in its final form. Share drafts only with the intended audience and remove working files when they are no longer needed, following the policies that apply to your setting. The ICO advises that identifiability decisions should be justified and revisited as circumstances change; UNESCO’s principles support human oversight of AI use.
What UK law and guidance do—and do not—settle
In the UK, personal data must be protected under data protection legislation. The Department for Education’s guidance addresses schools and colleges using AI with pupils’ personal data, including explaining the processing and seeking agreement. The legal basis, consent requirements, treatment of sensitive information, and responsibilities can vary with the details of a project and whether it is personal or institutional. The ICO’s guidance on consent for online services says parental consent applies to children under 13 in the specific context of a direct-to-child online service when consent is relied on as the legal basis; that narrow rule is not a universal age threshold for every project. See ICO guidance on age-appropriate design for online services. If you are outside the UK, check the rules that apply in your jurisdiction.
