You can reduce the interruption by arranging for the encoder to start when the operating system boots, configuring it to recover from process failure, and checking that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream afterward. The exact reconnect behavior depends on your operating system, encoder, and broadcast setup, so test the recovery procedure before relying on it.
What a reboot means for a YouTube stream
A VPS reboot stops processes running on the server, including a software encoder sending video to YouTube. The practical goal is therefore automatic recovery and a shorter interruption—not guaranteed uninterrupted playback. Contabo’s documentation describes reboot and recovery controls, while YouTube exposes stream status and health information; neither establishes that a particular encoder will reconnect automatically or that viewers will see no interruption.
Build recovery around two separate events: the operating system must boot, and the encoder must then start (or restart) with its media, credentials, and network access available.
Choose the safer reboot method
When the operating system is reachable
For a planned restart, use the operating system’s own reboot mechanism when it remains accessible. Contabo advises considering an in-OS reboot in that situation and warns that suddenly shutting down the server can cause problems and should be a last resort. See Contabo’s reboot guidance.

When you must use the Control Panel
Contabo’s Control Panel reboot shuts down and restarts the VPS. Treat it as a provider-level restart, not as a way to preserve the running encoder process. If the operating system is unresponsive, the panel may be necessary, but you should expect the stream to be interrupted while the VPS restarts. Contabo lists panel controls such as start, stop, and restart in its VPS documentation.
Prepare the encoder for automatic recovery
Configure the service or process manager appropriate to your VPS operating system to launch the encoder at boot and restart it if it exits unexpectedly. The right configuration depends on the Linux distribution, service manager, and encoder; without those details, a universal service definition or copy-and-paste command could be wrong.

- Make the input available: Confirm that the uploaded or mounted media path exists after boot and that the account running the encoder can read it.
- Make credentials available: Ensure the encoder can retrieve the correct YouTube stream key securely after restart. Do not put a stream key in a public script, log, or shared configuration.
- Check network readiness: The encoder needs network access to YouTube’s ingestion endpoint before it can send video. A process that starts before networking is ready may fail unless its service configuration retries.
- Set process recovery: Configure the service manager or encoder to try again after a failure, and check its logs to confirm that a failed start does not leave it stopped indefinitely.
- Test a real restart: Perform a controlled reboot while you can monitor both the VPS and the YouTube live control room. Confirm that the encoder returns and YouTube receives video before relying on the setup for an important broadcast.
Contabo’s VPS feature documentation lists cloud-init user-data scripts that run at boot, but that is not by itself a verified, distribution-specific recipe for starting and supervising a streaming encoder. Choose a service-manager configuration suited to your actual system.
Verify the stream after the VPS returns
- Confirm VPS availability. Check the Contabo panel to see whether the server is running, then verify that you can reach the operating system through your normal access method.
- Confirm encoder recovery. Check the process or service status and its logs. Verify that it opened the intended media source and is attempting to send video.
- Check YouTube ingestion. Inspect the live stream’s status and health in the creator tools you use. YouTube’s LiveStreams API reference documents stream status, health status, and primary and optional backup ingestion addresses.
- Diagnose health warnings. YouTube documents
videoIngestionStarvedas a condition where it is not receiving enough video for smooth streaming, which can cause viewer buffering. A running VPS alone does not establish that the broadcast is healthy; consult YouTube’s stream health messages. - Check the configured ingestion path. If you have a backup endpoint, verify that your encoder is actually configured to use it. YouTube documenting an optional backup address does not mean your encoder will switch to it automatically.
Use snapshots and rescue access for server recovery—not stream continuity
Contabo lists snapshots and a rescue system among its VPS features. A snapshot can support restoration, and rescue access can help you access or repair a server that will not boot normally. Neither keeps the encoder running through a reboot, and neither guarantees that the YouTube broadcast will avoid an interruption. Contabo explains how to boot a rescue system.
