Use a rain cover that fits both the EOS M50 and the lens attached to it, and keep the camera sheltered whenever you are not shooting. The EOS M50 is not established as rainproof: Canon’s available M50 support information gives operating limits but no rainfall tolerance or water-resistance rating. A cover reduces exposure; it does not make the camera waterproof.
Is the Canon EOS M50 safe to use in the rain?
Do not assume it is. Canon’s EOS M50 support page lists the camera’s manual and operating conditions, but the available information does not state a waterproof rating, a safe exposure time, or a rainfall intensity it can withstand.
Canon’s warning that a camera is not waterproof appears in its guidance for the EOS M50 Mark II. That is a different model, so it should not be presented as wording from the original M50 manual. It is nevertheless a reason to avoid treating the M50 as weatherproof. The practical approach is to shield the camera and stop shooting if water starts getting past the cover.
Choose a rain cover that fits the M50 and lens
A camera rain cover is the relevant accessory for shooting in wet weather. Canon describes its ERC-E5M medium rain cover as shielding EOS cameras from rain and protecting against humidity and accidental splashes. The listing does not confirm that it fits the EOS M50 with a particular lens, so do not assume compatibility from the product name alone.

Before buying a cover, check that it:
- Fits the EOS M50 body and the specific mounted lens, including the lens barrel when extended.
- Covers the body and likely paths for water to reach openings, without obstructing the lens.
- Allows you to reach and operate the shutter and necessary controls while it is fitted.
- Can be secured so it is less likely to shift in wind or while you move.
- Is practical to deploy quickly, and can be opened or removed without dragging wet fabric across the camera.
Practice fitting it and operating the camera in dry conditions. The listed Canon cover is an example of the product category, not a confirmed M50-and-lens recommendation.
How to shoot with the cover in place
- Before you leave: Fit the cover in a dry place and check the camera and lens remain usable. Bring a clean, dry cloth for droplets on the exterior.
- While shooting: Keep the cover positioned over the camera and avoid setting the camera on wet ground or other wet surfaces. Use shelter when you can, especially between shots.
- Stop if water gets in: If rain blows under the cover, water pools around openings, or the cover shifts out of position, stop shooting and put the camera away. This is a conservative precaution, not a Canon-published rainfall threshold.
- After exposure: If droplets are on the exterior, wipe them gently with a clean, dry cloth; avoid pushing moisture toward openings. Canon gives this advice in its Mark II handling guidance, not in the cited M50 material. If the M50 has become wet, consult its own manual or Canon support for model-specific next steps.
Rain protection is different from humidity and condensation
Canon lists the EOS M50’s working environment as 0–40°C and humidity of 85% or less on its support page. These are operating specifications, not an IP rating, waterproof guarantee, or measure of how much rain the camera can take. Humid air and liquid water reaching the camera are different exposure conditions.

Condensation is a separate risk when moving equipment between temperatures. Canon’s Mark II guidance recommends putting the camera in a sealed plastic bag when moving it from cold to warm conditions, allowing it to adjust gradually and helping prevent condensation. That bag advice is for acclimation, not a substitute for a rain cover while actively shooting. If condensation is visible, the Mark II guidance says not to use the camera until it evaporates; for the original M50, check its own manual or Canon support for model-specific instructions.
