On PS5, open the Control Center with the PS button and select Downloads/Uploads to see active and queued transfers. You can pause and resume an item, but PlayStation’s current support guidance does not document a universal control for moving any queued download to the front. Check the options shown for your specific item rather than relying on a “Prioritize” command being available.
Manage the download queue
- Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Select Downloads/Uploads and find the game, app, or update you want to manage.
- Choose the available action for that item. PlayStation documents pausing and resuming downloads, but does not guarantee a queue-reordering option across PS5 software versions.
Pausing another transfer and then starting or retrying the desired one may help you manage which transfer is active, but it is not a guaranteed way to change queue order. The controls visible for the selected item are the guide to what your console supports.
Check for a game or app update
To check an individual title, highlight it on the home screen, press Options, select Check for Update, and follow the on-screen prompts. PlayStation says that starting a game or app automatically updates it to the newest version available. See PlayStation’s update-check instructions.
Update PS5 system software separately
System software updates have a separate menu path: Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Use this route to check system software settings or start a system update; a system update is not managed as a game’s update. PlayStation’s system software guide also covers recovery options for failed updates.

Let downloads run in Rest Mode
For game and app downloads or updates to continue while the console is in Rest Mode, enable the setting that keeps the PS5 connected to the internet. Then open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates and turn on Auto-Download. If you also want updates installed automatically in Rest Mode, enable Auto-Install in Rest Mode.
These are separate choices: with Auto-Download on and Auto-Install off, updates can download while you are away without automatically installing. This can suit players who want to decide when an update installs, including when they have left a game suspended. System software has its own automatic download and installation options under Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. See PlayStation’s guides to automatic updates and Rest Mode power-saving settings.

Troubleshoot a stalled download
- In Control Center > Downloads/Uploads, select the stalled item and choose Pause and Resume.
- If it still will not start, choose Cancel and Delete. Find the title in the Game Library and try downloading it again.
- Check PlayStation service status for an outage.
- Check free space at Settings > Storage. The Game Library product information shows the title’s minimum free-space requirement.
- If the failed transfer is a system software update, make sure system software is current where possible and follow Sony’s official recovery instructions rather than using an unofficial update file.
PlayStation’s game-download troubleshooting guide documents the pause-and-resume and cancel-and-delete steps.
Some games let you choose what installs first
Sony describes a Preferred Install option for some games, allowing a player to choose a mode or feature—such as single-player or multiplayer—to install first. Support and the available choices depend on the game developer. This is a game-specific install choice, not a control for moving that game ahead of other items in Downloads/Uploads. Look for the option in that game’s store or install flow; not every title offers it. Sony’s PS5 FAQ explains the feature.

Storage and USB recovery are not queue controls
When storage is the problem
An M.2 SSD can expand storage and provide more space for game downloads, but extra capacity does not prioritize transfers. Games stored on USB extended storage must be copied back to console storage or an M.2 SSD to play. If you need more space, check Sony’s current compatibility and installation requirements before buying an M.2 drive: How to add an M.2 SSD to a PS5 console.
When a system update repeatedly fails
Sony’s manual recovery procedure uses a USB flash drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Create a PS5/UPDATE folder on the drive, save the official update file in it as PS5UPDATE.PUP, connect the drive to the console, start Safe Mode, and select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device. Use only Sony’s official update file and follow its current instructions: Update system software on a PS5 console. This procedure is for system-update recovery; it does not speed up game downloads or reorder the queue.
