Most browsers show the destination in the lower-left status area. On a phone, press and hold the link to reveal its address or a preview menu, then cancel instead of choosing Open. In either case, read the real hostname—not just the brand name in the link text—before deciding what to do.
A preview is an inspection aid, not proof that a site is safe. For payment, login, delivery, password-reset, or document requests, open the service’s official app or type a known address yourself.
Preview a link on a desktop or laptop
Use the status bar without navigating
- Move the pointer over the link. Do not press the mouse button.
- Look at the browser’s status area, usually at the lower-left corner. It displays the URL the link would request.
- Move away or press Escape to dismiss the display. Clicking is not required.
The exact appearance differs among browsers and websites. A page may use a button, JavaScript handler, or another interaction instead of a conventional link, so the status-bar method is not universal.
Copy the address without opening it
- Right-click the link (or Control-click on a Mac).
- Choose Copy link address, Copy link, or the equivalent menu item.
- Paste the result into a text editor or address bar without pressing Enter.
Copying lets you examine the complete URL, including its hostname, path, and query parameters. Do not paste a sensitive password-reset or private document URL into an unknown online scanner; the URL itself may contain a token that grants access.

Preview a link on a phone or tablet
iPhone, iPad, and Android
- Press and hold the link until a context menu or preview card appears.
- Read the displayed address and inspect the hostname.
- Choose Cancel, close the preview, or tap outside it if you do not want to navigate.
Labels vary by app and operating-system version. Some previews load content in an in-app browser; others only show a URL. If the menu offers Open in new tab, that still navigates, so do not choose it when your goal is inspection only.
When a long press does not work
- Try the link’s share or context menu and select a copy-address option.
- Use a saved bookmark or manually typed official address instead of interacting with a suspicious message.
- Ask the sender for the full URL as plain text, then inspect it without tapping it.
Read the real destination, not the familiar-looking text
Find the controlling domain
In a URL such as accounts.example.com.attacker.test, the controlling domain is attacker.test. The words accounts and example.com are only subdomains or labels chosen by the owner of the final domain. Read the hostname from right to left: the registered domain immediately before the ending such as .com, .org, or a country-code ending is generally the important part.

Spot look-alike characters
Attackers can use Unicode characters that resemble letters from a familiar brand. WhatsApp says its suspicious-link reminder can appear when a URL contains an unusual character combination and illustrates look-alike Unicode domains. A warning is useful context, but inspect the actual address and return to the chat if anything looks unfamiliar.
Do not treat HTTPS or a padlock as identity proof
Encryption protects the connection to the displayed site; it does not establish that the site belongs to the company named in a message. A fraudulent site can also use HTTPS. Verify the organization through an independently known address or official app.

Verify a sensitive request independently
If a message claims to be from a bank, delivery company, employer, cloud service, or social network, do not sign in through the message link. Instead:
- Open the service’s official app from your device, or type a known address saved in your password manager.
- Check notifications, orders, invoices, or security messages inside that authenticated service.
- Contact the organization using a phone number or support page you already trust—not details supplied by the suspicious message.
This avoids both malicious links and look-alike login pages. A preview card, familiar logo, sender name, or padlock cannot certify the request.
WhatsApp and Telegram link-preview controls
WhatsApp documents an optional Disable link previews setting under Settings (or your profile picture) → Privacy → Advanced. WhatsApp says the feature protects the sender’s IP address by preventing previews for links that sender sends. It does not disable previews received from other people, and the help page says it is off by default. Menu labels can vary by platform and app version. WhatsApp’s documented wording is: “As an advanced security measure, you can turn on Disable link previews.”
Turning previews off is a privacy choice, not a phishing detector. You still need to inspect links you receive and verify important requests independently.

Telegram
Telegram’s technical documentation says a webpage preview that is not marked safe requires confirmation and shows the exact URL that will be opened. Treat that confirmation as an opportunity to read the destination. “Requires confirmation” is not the same as a safety certification.
Preview versus opening: what each method reveals

Common mistakes and fixes
The link text looks official
Cause: Visible text can be edited independently of the destination. Fix: Hover, long-press, or copy the address and inspect the hostname.
The URL starts with a trusted brand name
Cause: A familiar name may be a subdomain or text before @. Fix: Identify the final controlling domain, as in brand.example.attacker.test.
A warning did not appear
Cause: Security warnings are not comprehensive. A 2020 academic study reported that, in its experiments on historical versions of Messenger, Slack, Telegram, Line, Instagram, and WhatsApp, the tested in-app browsers did not warn on the study’s phishing URLs. That evidence is not a current comparative test, so do not infer that a missing warning means safe. Fix: Verify through an official app or known address.

The preview opened a page accidentally
Fix: Do not enter credentials or payment data. Close the tab, clear any data you entered, and access the real service through a known address. If you submitted a password, change it from the official site and enable multifactor authentication.
A mobile menu shows only “Open”
Fix: Cancel, then use the share menu’s copy-link option or ask for the URL as text. Do not tap Open merely to discover the destination.

Privacy and reliability considerations
- A preview service may receive the URL to fetch its title or image. Do not submit password-reset, private-share, or authenticated URLs unless you understand the service’s handling.
- Rendered metadata can be stale, altered, or incomplete. Treat it as descriptive evidence, not a verdict.
- For repeatable documentation, record the complete URL, capture time, and the method used. A URL can redirect later.
- When a page fails to load, a failure is not evidence that the link is malicious or safe; use an independent verification route.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I preview a link in an email without clicking it?
