Reveal the destination URL without opening the page: hover over a link on a computer, or press and hold it on a phone or tablet. Check the registered domain, not just the link text, and do not proceed when the address or message context looks wrong.
Choose the safest preview method
Different apps expose different amounts of information. A URL-revealing control is more useful for security than a card that only shows a title or thumbnail.

Preview a link on a desktop
Hover without clicking
- Move the pointer over the link and keep the button untouched.
- Read the address shown in the browser’s lower status area or in a tooltip.
- Compare the destination’s domain with the organization named in the message.
If the address disappears too quickly, move the pointer away and back slowly. A preview may be unavailable when an application renders the link as a button, intercepts pointer events, or deliberately suppresses the status display.
Show Safari’s status bar
Safari for Mac places the URL in the status bar. If you cannot see it, select View > Show Status Bar. On a supported trackpad, Force Click can open a content preview, but treat that card as supplementary information; the address you inspect is still the key check.

Copy the target instead of opening it
- Right-click (or Control-click) the link and choose the command that copies its address.
- Paste the result into a plain-text editor.
- Read the full address there. Do not press Enter after pasting it into a browser address bar unless you have decided to visit.
Copying is especially useful for long URLs, links hidden behind images, and messages where the status bar is hard to read.
Preview a link on a phone or tablet
Use a long press
- Touch and hold the link until a context menu or preview appears.
- Inspect the displayed address before choosing Open, Open in New Tab, or an equivalent command.
- Dismiss the menu if the domain, spelling, or message context is unexpected.
Android and Apple devices use this general gesture, but the menu design depends on the app. A preview card may show page content while the menu exposes the actual URL; read the address rather than relying on the image or title.
Understand browser and email preview cards
Firefox link preview
Mozilla introduced link previews in Firefox 142. Where the feature is available, hold a link for roughly one second or right-click and select Preview Link. The card can include an image, page title, description, and estimated reading time when those details are available. Mozilla describes the rollout as experimental and progressive, so another Firefox installation may not show the option.

Firefox can also offer optional AI-generated key points. Mozilla says that feature reads the beginning of the page on the device and requires at least 3 GB of available RAM. Key points summarize content; they do not authenticate the sender or the destination domain.

Outlook.com and Outlook on the web may automatically turn a URL into a title, thumbnail, and description. To turn the feature off, use Settings > Mail > Compose and reply > Link preview. Whether enabled or disabled, inspect the underlying address and message context before following an unexpected link.
Read the URL like a security check
Find the registered domain
Read from the right side of the hostname toward the left. In login.example.com.attacker.test, the registered domain is attacker.test, not example.com. Words such as “secure,” “verify,” or a familiar brand in a subdomain do not change who controls the registered domain.

Look for deceptive spelling
Compare every character with the organization’s known address. Attackers can substitute punctuation, add or remove letters, or use look-alike characters from another alphabet. A familiar logo and convincing page title cannot make a misspelled domain genuine.
Treat shortened URLs as unexpanded
Services such as bit.ly, t.co, tinyurl.com, and cutt.ly conceal the final destination. Copy the address and inspect it as text when possible. Do not assume that a short link is safe because it uses a well-known shortening service.
Do not confuse HTTPS with legitimacy
HTTPS encrypts the connection, but malicious sites can use HTTPS too. The domain, the reason you received the message, and the request made after opening matter more than the padlock icon.

A practical decision workflow
- Reveal: Hover on a computer or long-press on a mobile device.
- Read: Identify the registered domain and inspect spelling, subdomains, and unusual characters.
- Context-check: Ask whether you expected the message and whether the requested action makes sense.
- Unshorten mentally or manually: Treat a shortened address as unknown until its destination is clear.
- Choose an independent route: If the message claims to be from a bank, retailer, employer, or service, type the organization’s known address yourself or use its official app.
- Protect secrets: Never enter a password, verification code, payment number, or recovery phrase on a page reached from an unexpected message.
What to do when a link remains suspicious
Before opening
- Leave the message unopened if the sender, request, or domain does not make sense.
- Do not rely on a displayed sender name, email address, or phone number; those identifiers can be spoofed.
- Report or delete the message using your provider’s normal controls.
After opening by mistake
Close the page and do not submit information. If you entered credentials, change the affected password through the service’s independently opened official site, and use the service’s account-security guidance. A preview or a quick visit is not proof that no harm occurred, so focus on what information, if any, you actually submitted.

No URL appears when hovering
Enable the browser’s status bar (Safari uses View > Show Status Bar), try a different area of the link, or copy the address with the context menu. Some web applications intentionally hide status text.
Long-press opens the link immediately
Keep your finger still and press longer, then release only after the context menu appears. If the app still opens immediately, use its share, copy-link, or message-details command and paste the result into a text editor.

The preview card looks convincing
Ignore the thumbnail and headline until you have verified the registered domain. Cards are built from page metadata and can be copied or manipulated.
The URL is too long to understand
Focus first on the hostname and registered domain. Everything after the first slash is the path and query; it can contain tracking or campaign data, but it cannot turn an attacker’s domain into the organization’s domain.
