Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A silent pre-recorded video is not the same thing as a stream with no audio track. YouTube’s Live Streaming API flags an ingest with no audio stream and says it must contain exactly one; its documentation does not say that a present but silent audio track makes YouTube stop a stream. Configure your encoder to keep sending valid video and one audio stream, then check Live Control Room and the encoder’s stream-health indicators. This is not a guaranteed fix for every interruption: YouTube does not document a silence timeout or promise that a silent stream will stay live indefinitely.
Set up the encoder to send a continuous stream
- Keep video output running. Loop or play the pre-recorded video continuously in the encoder. YouTube says to end a stream by stopping content sent from the encoder, so check that playback or looping will not reach the end and leave the encoder with nothing to send. YouTube’s encoder-stream instructions explain how ending encoder output ends the stream.
- Send exactly one audio stream, even if the program is silent. If the recording has no sound, configure the encoder so its output still includes an audio stream. YouTube’s API identifies
noAudioStreamas an ingest-health issue: “The ingestion stream does not contain any audio streams, but it must contain exactly one audio stream.” The general YouTube guidance does not specify how to create or route a silent track in each encoder, so consult that encoder’s audio-track settings rather than assuming a particular control name. YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams documents this health issue. - Use a supported audio output format. For RTMP/RTMPS encoder output, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Check the selected format as well as whether an audio stream is actually being sent. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers supported settings and testing.
- Test before the public broadcast. Use a representative section of the video and the same audio-track setup planned for the live stream. YouTube recommends testing and reviewing stream health and messages; a test can reveal whether the encoder is sending the intended audio and video before viewers depend on the broadcast. Preview and monitor in YouTube Live Control Room
Before starting
Open the event in Live Control Room and check its preview before starting the public stream. Confirm that video is moving as expected and that the stream has no missing-audio warning. YouTube’s live streaming tips for computer recommend previewing before going live.
While live
- Check that the encoder remains connected and continues sending output.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview to confirm that video continues rather than freezing or ending.
- Review stream-health indicators and messages. If YouTube reports no audio stream, inspect the encoder’s audio routing and track configuration; an intentionally silent track and an absent audio stream are different conditions.
- Monitor audio and video quality during the broadcast, as YouTube advises in its live streaming tips and encoder settings guidance.
If YouTube Live stops, identify what stopped
Do not assume silence caused the interruption. Check which part of the broadcast failed: the encoder may have stopped sending content, the network may have lost its connection, the ingest may be missing its audio stream, or an enabled auto-stop setting may have ended the broadcast.
Encoder output stopped
Check whether playback ended, the source file failed, the encoder crashed, or its output was stopped. YouTube’s instruction is direct: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” Restart or resume encoder output and verify the Live Control Room preview. Missing audio stream reported
Inspect the encoder’s audio source, routing, and output-track settings. A silent program can still be sent with an audio stream; the API warning concerns an ingest that contains no audio stream. Confirm the health message clears rather than relying on the video’s silence alone. YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams
Encoder is running but the preview or stream fails
Check encoder output and outbound internet connectivity. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends inspecting the encoder and testing the outbound connection. If output is being sent but the network is unstable, resolve that connection problem and verify recovery in Live Control Room.

Broadcast ends after video sending stops
Check the broadcast’s auto-stop setting. YouTube’s API documentation says that, when auto-stop is enabled, a broadcast may stop around one minute after the channel owner stops sending video. That behavior concerns stopped video output, not a documented silence timeout. YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveBroadcasts
What YouTube documents—and what it does not
YouTube documents a health issue for an ingest with no audio stream, and its encoder guidance recommends a supported audio format, testing, and ongoing monitoring. It also documents that stopping encoder output ends the stream. Those points support keeping the encoder’s video and audio output continuous and checking health diagnostics.

The official pages cited here do not establish that digital silence by itself triggers termination, name a silence-detection timeout, or guarantee that a valid but silent stream will remain live indefinitely. Adding silence may be a way to ensure an audio stream is present in some encoder setups, but YouTube’s documentation does not establish it as a guaranteed cure. Diagnose the active stream using its health messages, preview, encoder output, and network connection.
Archive duration is not a silence limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive rule, not a silence timeout, and should not be interpreted as a promise that a stream of any length will remain live. See YouTube’s encoder-stream instructions.
