Assume every AI-generated change is untrusted until it passes the same security gates as human-written code, plus controls for model context, tool permissions and prompt injection. Require a qualified human review, scan every pull request, verify every dependency and keep secrets out of the assistant’s context before code can merge or ship.
The practical baseline is NIST SP 800-218A, released on July 26, 2024, used alongside Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF) 1.1. It extends normal secure-development practices for AI systems rather than replacing them.
What makes AI-written code a security risk?
AI coding assistants generate plausible code from patterns in their training data and from the context they can read. Plausible is not the same as correct, current or safe. A suggestion can omit authorization checks, validate input incompletely, mishandle errors, use unsafe cryptography, expose sensitive data in logs or introduce a dependency that is outdated, typosquatted or malicious.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Agentic tools create additional exposure. An assistant may read issue descriptions, pull-request comments, README files, dependency metadata or network content, then use that material to decide what to edit or which command to run. Hidden instructions in those sources are indirect prompt injections. They can persuade an agent to weaken a control, disclose files or execute an unsafe command.

Security therefore depends less on whether a developer used Copilot or another brand and more on whether the workflow preserves independent checks. The code’s origin should change the controls around context and autonomy, not lower the quality bar for testing and review.
Use an AI-specific secure-development policy
Write the rules before the first generation request. NIST SP 800-218A is the primary AI-specific extension to SSDF 1.1 and is intended for producers of AI models, producers of AI systems that use those models and acquirers of those systems. Adapt its practices to your team’s threat model and regulatory obligations.
Define approved use and prohibited use
Document which assistants, models, extensions and hosted services are approved. State whether they may generate new code, refactor existing code, write tests, review pull requests, modify infrastructure or deploy. Prohibit uses that your risk assessment cannot support, such as sending regulated records, production credentials, private keys or unreleased vulnerability details to a service that has not been approved for that data.
Recommended Free Tools
Classify the data developers may place in prompts. A useful policy distinguishes public information, internal source code, confidential business data, personal data and secrets. For each class, specify the allowed tool, retention and training settings, geographic requirements and approval needed. Apply the policy to design, implementation, review, testing, deployment and monitoring; do not limit it to the coding editor.
Keep normal gates mandatory
An AI-generated pull request must follow the same branch protections, test requirements, change-management rules and release approvals as a human-authored pull request. Record which parts were generated or substantially modified by an assistant so reviewers can choose an appropriate depth of examination. Disclosure is useful for accountability, but it never substitutes for testing or review.
Control the model’s context and permissions
Context is an attack surface. Before enabling an assistant in a repository, determine exactly which files, branches, issue trackers, pull requests, terminals, package registries and network locations it can access. Do not assume that a repository’s .gitignore file prevents an AI tool from reading a file; assistants can have separate indexing and exclusion mechanisms.

Exclude sensitive paths
Use the assistant’s documented exclusion rules and repository-level policies to keep these items out of prompts and indexes:

- Incident-response notes, unreleased security findings and regulated data
Store secrets in a vault or environment-managed secret store. Inject them at runtime through the deployment platform rather than pasting them into a prompt or source file. Inspect the tool’s data-retention and model-training controls, and log access where your privacy and security policies permit.
Limit autonomous actions
Start with read-only repository access and a disabled network unless a task requires otherwise. Require confirmation before the agent writes outside the working tree, changes access-control policy, edits deployment manifests, installs packages, runs database commands or pushes a branch. Use separate credentials with the minimum permissions needed for each operation. A coding agent should not possess production credentials merely because it can edit application code.
Treat every external text source as untrusted
Issue bodies, comments, README files, generated documentation, package metadata and web pages can contain instructions aimed at the model. Ask the agent to treat them as data, not authority, and require a human to approve any instruction that changes security settings or executes a command. Review the complete proposed command, its working directory and its network destinations before allowing it to run.
Ask for secure designs and small, reviewable changes
A vague request such as “add login” invites an incomplete implementation. Put security requirements in the task specification:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Identify trust boundaries, assets and abuse cases before implementation.
- Require authentication and authorization rules for every protected operation.
- Specify input validation, output encoding, error handling and rate limits.
- Require least-privilege permissions and deny-by-default behavior.
- Specify approved cryptographic algorithms and key-management boundaries; never ask the model to invent cryptography.
- Define negative tests for malformed, unauthorized and unexpected inputs.
Ask the model to explain its assumptions, trust boundaries and failure cases, then check those explanations against the design. Keep each generated change small enough that a reviewer can understand the complete diff. Separate a dependency upgrade, an authentication change and a database migration into different pull requests when practical. Small changes make it easier to identify an unsafe assumption and to revert a defective implementation.

Verify every generated dependency
Dependency suggestions are a frequent supply-chain failure point. A model may choose an obsolete version, confuse two similarly named packages or repeat an install command copied from an untrusted example. Never run an install command solely because an assistant produced it.
Dependency review procedure
- Inspect the manifest diff. Confirm every new package is necessary, identify its direct and transitive dependencies and check its license and maintenance status under your organization’s policy.
- Pin the version. Use a lockfile and an approved version range or exact version. Reproducible builds should resolve the same artifact in CI and production.
- Verify provenance. Check the official package registry, repository ownership, release history, signature or attestation where available, and the package name character by character to avoid typosquatting.
- Run the ecosystem audit. For example, use
npm audit,pip-audit,govulncheckorcargo auditas appropriate to the language and build system. - Cross-check advisories. Check the National Vulnerability Database, GitHub Advisory Database or OSV for the exact package and version. Record accepted exceptions with an owner and expiration date.
- Rebuild from a clean environment. Ensure CI resolves the pinned graph and that the resulting artifacts match what was reviewed.
Scan generated code and its dependency graph together. A safe-looking wrapper can still expose a vulnerable transitive library, and a secure library can be used unsafely by the calling code.
Require independent human review
OWASP’s AI Security Verification Standard (AISVS) states: “Verify that AI-generated code always goes through code review by a qualified human engineer.” The person who prompted the generation should not be the sole reviewer, and an AI agent does not count as a human reviewer.

Use separation of duties
Assign a reviewer who understands the language, framework and security consequences of the change. For security-critical files—identity and access control, cryptographic code, payment processing, deserialization, multi-tenant boundaries and infrastructure—set an elevated bar such as two-person review or security-team sign-off. Review the complete diff, not only lines labelled as generated.
What the reviewer should examine
- Authorization at every entry point, including background jobs and administrative endpoints
- Validation and canonicalization before parsing, querying, redirecting or rendering data
- Secrets, personal data and sensitive identifiers in logs, errors and telemetry
- Concurrency, transaction boundaries, retries and fail-open behavior
- Cryptographic algorithm, key storage, nonce or IV handling and certificate validation
- File, process, shell, template and network operations for injection or path traversal
- Dependency versions, lockfiles, build scripts and generated infrastructure
- Tests that demonstrate rejection of unauthorized and malformed requests
Ask the author to explain why each security-sensitive choice is safe. If the explanation depends on an assumption that is not enforced in code or configuration, treat it as a defect.
Run automated security checks on every AI-generated pull request
Automation makes checks repeatable and traceable. NIST SP 800-218A describes testing executable code to identify vulnerabilities and verify compliance before release. Configure the pipeline so a pull request containing AI-generated or AI-modified code cannot bypass these checks.

| Control | What it finds | When to run |
|---|---|---|
| Static application security testing (SAST) | Unsafe data flows, injection patterns, weak cryptography and framework misuse in source or bytecode | On every pull request and on the protected branch |
| Interactive application security testing (IAST) | Runtime data flows and vulnerabilities observed while instrumented tests execute | In integration or staging tests where the technology supports it |
| Dynamic application security testing (DAST) | Externally observable issues in a running application, such as authentication, session and injection flaws | Against an isolated test or staging environment |
| Secret scanning | Credentials, tokens, private keys and high-entropy secrets in code and history | On every change and continuously for repository history |
| Infrastructure-as-code scanning | Over-permissive cloud policies, exposed services, unsafe network and storage settings | Whenever Terraform, Kubernetes, cloud templates or similar files change |
| Software-composition analysis (SCA) | Vulnerable or disallowed direct and transitive dependencies | On every manifest or lockfile change and at scheduled intervals |
Run tests that exercise authorization boundaries, input validation, error paths and security logging, not only happy-path unit tests. Keep scanner configurations versioned and review suppressions. A suppression should name the rationale, owner, evidence and expiry rather than silently hiding a finding.
Set explicit merge and release gates
Define severity policy before a finding appears. Block a merge when a critical vulnerability is detected, whether the scanner found it in generated code, a dependency or infrastructure. OWASP AISVS gives CVSS 9.0 or higher as an example critical threshold; your organization may use an equivalent scale or stricter rule. Apply the threshold consistently and document any risk acceptance with a business owner, compensating controls and a deadline.
Separate pull-request status from release approval. A change that passes current scanners can still require penetration testing, threat-model review or security-team approval because of its business impact. Re-run checks on the exact artifact promoted to production so a build or dependency-resolution change cannot invalidate the earlier result.
Monitor after deployment and feed findings back
Secure development continues after merge. Monitor authentication failures, authorization denials, unusual data access, command execution, dependency alerts and performance regressions. Keep logs of model inputs and outputs where appropriate and lawful, while redacting secrets and personal data. Retain enough context to reconstruct why a change was made and which controls approved it.
When an incident or recurring scanner finding occurs, fix the vulnerable code, add a regression test and update the prompt guidance, policy or training that allowed it. NIST’s SSDF approach focuses on reducing vulnerabilities in released software and addressing root causes so the same defect does not recur. Feed lessons into secure coding examples and reviewer checklists rather than relying on a one-time warning.

| Tool and network permissions | Can the agent access a shell, package registry, issue tracker or internet? Are permissions scoped, time-limited and auditable? |
| Security coverage | Does the workflow integrate SAST, SCA, secret, IaC, IAST and DAST checks, and can teams configure rules and suppressions? |
| Pull-request gating and audit logs | Can policy block merges, assign findings to a human and show who approved each exception? |
| Deployment isolation | Is a self-hosted, private-network or otherwise isolated deployment available for sensitive code? |
| Human ownership | Can every finding, exception and approval be assigned to a named engineer or team with a due date? |
An AI-branded scanner does not replace independent review. Treat it as one signal in a defense-in-depth pipeline and verify its coverage with known test cases.
A practical pull-request checklist
- The task states trust boundaries, authorization, validation, least privilege and required security tests.
- The assistant is approved for the data classification involved, and sensitive paths are excluded.
- No secret, production record or private key appears in prompts, generated files or logs.
- Agent shell, network and repository permissions are limited, and every proposed command was reviewed before execution.
- Every generated dependency is necessary, pinned, provenance-checked and audited with the ecosystem’s tool.
- A qualified human other than the prompting author reviewed the complete diff.
- Security-critical changes received the additional reviewer or security-team approval required by policy.
- SAST, IAST where applicable, DAST, secret scanning, IaC scanning and SCA completed successfully.
- Critical findings are blocked according to the organization’s severity threshold; exceptions have an owner and expiry.
- Regression tests, monitoring and rollback plans cover the new behavior.
What to do when a check fails
A scanner reports a vulnerability in generated code
Reproduce the finding, identify the data flow and decide whether the defect is exploitable in your deployment. Fix the root cause rather than adding a pattern-based suppression. Add a regression test, rerun the full pipeline and have the independent reviewer re-examine related code paths.
A dependency has a high-severity advisory
Stop the merge, confirm that the advisory applies to the resolved version and determine whether an upgrade or replacement is available. If an immediate upgrade is impossible, isolate the affected feature, apply compensating controls and obtain a time-limited risk acceptance from the designated owner. Do not rely on the model’s claim that a package is safe.
The assistant exposed a secret or read prohibited data
Revoke and rotate the credential, preserve relevant audit logs, determine where the data was transmitted or retained and follow your incident-response process. Remove the secret from source and history, tighten exclusion and permission rules, and review other repositories for the same exposure.
The agent followed an instruction in a comment or README
Treat the event as an indirect prompt-injection incident. Revert unauthorized changes, inspect commands and network activity, and add a policy that external text is untrusted input. Require confirmation for operations that alter security settings, install software or access sensitive locations.
Release decision
Do not merge or deploy AI-written code merely because it compiles, passes unit tests or came from a reputable assistant. Release it only after context and permissions were controlled, dependencies were verified, an independent qualified engineer reviewed the change, the complete security pipeline passed and any residual risk was explicitly accepted. This process lets teams gain the speed of AI assistance without turning the assistant into an unaccountable production author.
