Make AI context deny-by-default. Keep credentials, private keys, regulated data, production exports, and security-sensitive configuration outside the assistant’s readable workspace. Then add file and repository exclusions, minimum-necessary context, secret scanning, outbound controls, audit review, and human approval for generated changes. Privacy settings that limit retention or model training are useful, but they do not stop a tool from reading a file it can access.

What “prevent access” means

An AI coding assistant can receive source material through more paths than the file you explicitly attach. Depending on the product and mode, it may index the workspace, inspect neighboring files, follow imports, read configuration and logs, execute shell commands, use repository history, or send selected context to a hosted model. An agent that can run tools has a different exposure than autocomplete that sees only a narrow code window.

Use four separate questions for every tool, client and plan:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Can it read the data? Consider the workspace, symlinks, remote filesystems, repository history, shell output and mounted credentials.
  • Can it transmit the data? Check the model endpoint, browser or extension path, proxy coverage and network permissions.
  • How long is it retained? Review prompts, snippets, thread history, telemetry, feedback and user-engagement records separately.
  • What happens to generated code? Treat it as untrusted output that requires testing, security checks and human approval.

A training opt-out answers only one retention or use question. It is not an access-control mechanism, and it cannot undo a disclosure that already occurred.

Step 1: remove secrets from the assistant’s normal context

Move sensitive values out of source trees and into a secrets manager or a protected runtime-injection path. Keep only placeholders and documented variable names in version control. This applies to API keys, database passwords, cloud credentials, private and signing keys, bearer tokens, customer exports, regulated datasets, production logs and backup files.

Use placeholders, not live values

A committed configuration should identify the required setting without containing its value. For example, application code can read DATABASE_URL or PAYMENTS_API_KEY from the runtime environment while documentation describes the format, owner and rotation process. A local setup guide can point developers to an approved secret store instead of showing a real token.

Do not use chat as a debugging shortcut

Do not paste a complete .env file, private key, production stack trace, customer record or signed request into a chat. Redacting one obvious token is not enough if the surrounding data identifies a customer, reveals an internal endpoint or allows reconstruction of the secret. Revoke and rotate any credential that was sent to an unapproved model or client; deleting the conversation does not prove that every copy or telemetry record has disappeared.

Step 2: build an agent-safe workspace

Give the assistant a separate trust boundary rather than your entire developer machine. Use a dedicated checkout, sanitized worktree, container or virtual machine containing only the files and fixtures required for the task. Keep secret-bearing material outside that boundary and inject narrowly scoped test values only when a task genuinely needs them.

Files and capabilities to keep outside

  • .env, .env.local, .env.production and other environment files
  • Cloud-provider credentials, SSH keys, signing certificates and private keys
  • Production database dumps, customer exports, regulated records and real support tickets
  • Generated logs, crash archives, backup files and package-manager credential stores
  • Deployment manifests or configuration containing privileged endpoints and passwords

Apply least privilege to every layer: filesystem permissions, repository access, shell commands, network egress and credentials. A local agent may automatically index and transmit configuration, environment and log files unless its scope is explicitly constrained. Microsoft’s Zero Trust guidance therefore recommends a minimum-necessary workspace and layered controls rather than relying on a single setting.

Limit shell and network access

If the task is a refactor, the agent usually does not need production credentials, unrestricted internet access or permission to push a branch. Run it with a read-only checkout where possible, deny access to host home directories and credential sockets, and allow only the package registries or test services required by the build. Record exceptions so a temporary capability is removed after the task.

Use sanitized fixtures

When an issue requires realistic data, create a fixture with the same shape but fabricated values. Remove authorization headers, account identifiers, timestamps that reveal activity, and free-form notes that could contain personal information. Keep the fixture in the agent checkout and verify that test output does not print it back into a chat transcript or build log.

Step 3: configure native file exclusions

Where a product supports content exclusions, configure them at the repository or organization level and test the effective policy in every client mode your team uses. GitHub documents that Copilot can be prevented from accessing specified files. Useful patterns include:

- "**/.env"
- "**/*.pem"
- "**/*secret*"
- "/config/production/**"
- "/logs/**"

Patterns should cover names, extensions and directories used by your organization, including alternate spellings such as secrets.json, secret*, *.cfg, /scripts/** and **/.env. Review repository-level rules when a project is added, and use the documented organization-level "*": form when a policy must apply across file-system roots and repositories.

Keep an inventory of exclusions and an owner for each rule. A broad rule that blocks every *.cfg file may break useful assistance, while a narrow rule that blocks only production.cfg can miss a renamed copy. Test both positive cases (a protected file is not offered as context) and negative cases (ordinary source remains usable), then repeat the test after IDE, extension or policy changes.

What exclusions do not guarantee

GitHub warns that semantic information from an excluded file can still reach Copilot indirectly through the IDE. For example, an included file may contain a function signature, generated type or error message derived from excluded content. Exclusions also do not apply to symlinks or remote filesystems. They reduce direct file access; they do not create a complete information-flow barrier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Copilot CLI and IDE Agent mode do not support content exclusion. An exclusion configured for inline suggestions or supported chat does not protect an agent that can inspect a broader workspace, run commands or use other tools. Treat unsupported modes as a separate threat model and enforce isolation at the filesystem, process and network layers instead.

Step 4: choose the right trust boundary for each mode

Mode or capability Typical exposure Control to require
Inline completion Editor context, nearby code and product telemetry Content exclusions, approved plan and client settings
Chat or edit mode Selected files, conversation history and attached snippets Explicit file selection, redaction and retention review
CLI or autonomous agent Workspace traversal, shell output, repository history and tool calls Sanitized checkout or container, command allowlist, no production credentials
Remote or browser workflow Uploads through browser, extension, gateway or remote filesystem DLP or proxy inspection, device policy and audit logs

Do not approve a repository merely because one editor mode is configured safely. Name the exact product, plan, client, extension and feature in the approval record, then verify that exclusions and telemetry settings apply to that combination.

Step 5: verify retention and model-training settings

Read the policy for the plan and interface your organization actually uses. GitHub’s current Copilot product documentation states that the default Business and Enterprise IDE chat and code-completion setting does not retain prompts and suggestions, while user-engagement data is kept for two years. Those are different data classes: a no-retention statement for prompts does not mean that all telemetry, feedback or account records disappear.

For individual Copilot plans, review the privacy control governing use of interaction data for model training. GitHub’s March 25, 2026 policy announcement said that Free, Pro and Pro+ interaction data would be used for training from April 24, 2026 unless users opted out; Business and Enterprise were not affected by that update. Organizations should record the setting, effective date, administrator responsible and evidence of the configured state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply the same review to other assistants, including ChatGPT, Cursor and Claude Code: identify whether prompts, code snippets, thread history, feedback, abuse-monitoring records or diagnostic telemetry are retained, for what period, and whether they can be used to improve models. A favorable policy lowers exposure after transmission; it does not authorize sending secrets or proprietary code.

Step 6: add outbound controls beyond the IDE

Microsoft recommends layered controls across the workflow. Enterprise DLP, a cloud access security broker (CASB), proxy inspection or an AI gateway can detect or block credentials, large code uploads and unapproved inference endpoints before data leaves the organization.

Design the policy around real clients

  • Allowlist approved model endpoints, extensions and organizational accounts.
  • Block uploads containing private-key headers, common token formats, credential filenames or regulated-data identifiers.
  • Alert on unusually large transfers, archive uploads and requests from unmanaged devices.
  • Log user, device, client, repository, destination and policy decision for investigation.
  • Test coverage for native IDE extensions, browser sessions, command-line clients and remote development environments.

DLP coverage varies by tool, browser, device, operating system and extension behavior. A proxy that sees browser traffic may not see a native extension’s encrypted connection; an endpoint rule on a managed laptop may not protect a personal machine. Document those blind spots and disable unsupported clients for repositories containing material that cannot leave the trust boundary.

Step 7: detect secrets before and after transmission

Pre-commit hooks and repository push protection should scan for API keys, tokens, private keys and other high-entropy credentials before they reach a remote repository. CI should repeat the scan because secrets can enter through generated files, merge conflicts or dependency updates. Add dependency checks and static application security testing to the same pipeline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GitHub’s cloud agent documentation describes CodeQL, dependency-advisory checks and secret scanning for API keys, tokens, hardcoded secrets and vulnerable dependencies. These checks are containment, not permission to expose a secret to an assistant. If a scan finds a credential, revoke it, investigate where it traveled and remove it from history where appropriate.

Review generated changes as untrusted code

  1. Run the project’s tests in an isolated environment.
  2. Run static analysis, dependency review and secret scanning on the complete diff.
  3. Inspect authorization, input validation, logging and error-handling changes manually.
  4. Confirm that generated configuration does not add credentials, telemetry endpoints or unsafe network calls.
  5. Require a human reviewer and protected-branch approval before merge.

GitHub documents branch restrictions and mandatory human review for Copilot cloud-agent pull requests. Adopt equivalent controls for any agent, regardless of vendor, because a clean-looking patch can still introduce a backdoor, weaken an access check or copy sensitive data into a new log statement.

Roll out controls in stages

Start with an inventory of repositories, clients and modes rather than enabling an assistant everywhere. Mark repositories that contain production configuration, regulated records, signing material or customer exports. Permit AI assistance first in sanitized projects, then expand only after exclusion tests, DLP checks and incident procedures pass.

Give developers a short approved-workflow guide: which checkout to use, where test secrets come from, which files must never be attached, and how to report a suspected disclosure. Security teams should test a normal editor, a browser session, a CLI agent and a remote-development client. Repeat those tests when an extension updates, a repository moves, or a vendor changes its privacy policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep evidence of the decision: tool and plan name, client version, enabled modes, exclusion configuration, retention setting, DLP coverage and reviewer. This makes a later investigation faster and exposes gaps such as a safe desktop IDE paired with an unrestricted command-line agent.

Operational checklist

  • Classify repositories and mark those containing secrets, regulated data or production configuration.
  • Remove live credentials from source and replace them with runtime-injected values.
  • Create a sanitized checkout, container or VM for AI-assisted work.
  • Exclude environment files, keys, logs, backups, production directories and secret-named files.
  • Verify exclusions separately for autocomplete, chat, edit, CLI and agent modes.
  • Assume symlinks and remote filesystems can bypass editor-level exclusions.
  • Set filesystem, shell, repository and network permissions to the minimum required.
  • Review retention, training, telemetry and feedback settings for the exact plan and client.
  • Deploy DLP, CASB, proxy or gateway controls where their coverage is proven.
  • Enable pre-commit, CI and push-protection secret scanning.
  • Require tests, SAST, dependency checks, branch protection and human review before merge.
  • Audit policy decisions and rehearse credential revocation and incident response.

How to investigate a suspected disclosure

  1. Contain the credential: revoke or rotate keys, tokens, passwords and certificates that may have been exposed.
  2. Identify the path: determine whether the value was read from a file, shell output, repository history, IDE context, browser upload or agent tool call.
  3. Preserve evidence: retain relevant client, proxy, DLP, repository and identity logs under your incident process.
  4. Check downstream use: review authentication, cloud, database and model-provider logs for access after the suspected exposure.
  5. Close the gap: remove the file from the agent workspace, tighten permissions, update exclusions or disable the unsupported mode.
  6. Validate recovery: rerun secret scans, confirm branch protections and document the affected plan, client and date.

Questions to ask before approving an AI coding tool

Decision area Questions
Data boundary Can it read the whole workspace, symlinks, remote filesystems, repository history or mounted credentials?
Client-mode coverage Do exclusions apply to autocomplete, chat, CLI, editing and autonomous-agent modes?
Retention and training Are prompts, snippets, thread history, telemetry or feedback retained or used for training, and for how long?
Permissions Can the agent read secrets, run commands, access the network or push branches?
Detection Are secret scanning, static analysis, dependency checks and audit logs available?
Enforcement Can DLP, proxy, CASB or endpoint policy block unsupported clients and unmanaged devices?

The practical rule

Protect the boundary first, then reduce what is retained, then detect and review what the assistant produces. If an agent can read a secret-bearing file, no privacy toggle makes that design safe. A sanitized workspace, explicit exclusions where supported, isolation for unsupported modes, outbound inspection, secret scanning and mandatory human review provide defense in depth without requiring developers to guess what an assistant can see.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop Copilot or an AI coding agent from reading my .env file?

Keep every .env file outside the agent’s checkout or mount it nowhere in the container or virtual machine. Where supported, add patterns such as **/.env and **/.env* to repository or organization exclusions. Then verify the exact client and mode: GitHub says exclusions do not apply to Copilot CLI or IDE Agent mode, and they do not cover symlinks or remote filesystems. Filesystem isolation is the control that still works in those cases.

Can an AI coding assistant see secrets in files I did not open?

It can, depending on the product and mode. Workspace indexing, neighboring-file context, import analysis, repository history, shell output and agent tool calls can expose content you never attached manually. A local agent may automatically index configuration, environment and log files unless its workspace is explicitly scoped. Use a sanitized checkout and deny access to credential directories rather than assuming unopened files are invisible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Copilot content exclusions enough for agent mode?

No. GitHub documents that Copilot CLI and IDE Agent mode do not support content exclusion. Even supported exclusions can leak semantic information indirectly through included code, and they do not apply to symlinks or remote filesystems. For an agent, use a separate checkout, container or VM, minimum filesystem and network permissions, and no production credentials.

Does opting out of AI training stop my code from being sent to the model?

No. A training opt-out governs a later use of interaction data; it is not an access-control or transmission setting. If the assistant can read a file, the content may still be sent to provide an answer. Prevent access first, then review retention, telemetry, feedback and training settings for the exact plan and client.

How do I keep proprietary code out of ChatGPT, Cursor or Claude Code?

Define an approved workspace containing only the files needed for the task, remove secrets and regulated data, and use organizational DLP, proxy or gateway controls where available. Review each product’s retention and training policy, disable unapproved clients, and log the tool, plan, client and enabled modes. Do not paste complete proprietary modules when a small synthetic example will reproduce the issue.

What should a small team do if it cannot deploy enterprise DLP?

Start with controls that do not require a separate service: sanitized worktrees or containers, no credentials in source, read-only repositories, restricted shell and network access, pre-commit and CI secret scanning, push protection, dependency checks, and mandatory human review. Document which clients are approved and disable agent modes that cannot be isolated. Add DLP or an AI gateway when the organization can verify coverage for its actual devices and extensions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if a secret was already sent to an AI tool?

Treat it as exposed. Revoke or rotate the credential, identify whether it came from a file, shell output, repository history or browser upload, preserve relevant identity, proxy, DLP and repository logs, and check downstream authentication and cloud activity. Remove the file from the agent workspace, tighten permissions, update exclusions or disable the unsupported mode, then rerun scans and document the affected tool, plan, client and date.

What safeguards should apply to AI-generated code?

Run tests in isolation, then static analysis, dependency review and secret scanning on the complete diff. Inspect authorization, input validation, logging and error handling manually, and check that generated configuration does not add credentials, telemetry endpoints or unsafe network calls. Require a human reviewer and protected-branch approval before merge; a plausible patch can still weaken access controls or create a data leak.

The Bottom Line

Keep secrets and sensitive code outside the assistant’s readable boundary. Use sanitized workspaces, mode-specific exclusions, least-privilege permissions, outbound inspection, secret scanning and mandatory human review. Privacy and training settings reduce exposure after transmission, but they never replace access control.
