Yes—Microsoft Teams can block screenshots and screen recordings in a protected meeting. The control is called Prevent screen captures, and it is a Teams Premium feature that the meeting organizer or co-organizer turns on in Meeting options. It is off by default, works only on supported Teams clients, and cannot stop somebody photographing a display with a separate phone or camera.
What Teams’ screenshot prevention actually does
When Prevent screen captures is enabled, Teams blocks built-in screenshot and screen-recording functions and most third-party capture applications on supported clients. The protection applies to meeting views rather than to the physical screen itself. A camera pointed at a monitor remains outside Teams’ control.
Microsoft describes the feature as a Teams Premium capability for blocking screenshots and screen recordings on supported platforms. The organizer or co-organizer needs the appropriate Teams Premium entitlement; attendees do not each need to buy a license simply to join a protected meeting.
The setting also affects people who use an unsupported client: instead of seeing the meeting video and shared content, they receive an audio-only experience. That behavior is intentional rather than an indication that the organizer configured the meeting incorrectly.

- SUPPORT WORK FROM ANYWHERE WITH SYNC: Whether employees are in the office, at home, or somewhere else, Sync device management software helps everyone stay connected by letting you ensure their Logitech video collaboration personal devices are being used and up to date.
- Open workspaces are great for collaboration, but not so great when the noise around you makes it hard to concentrate. Active noise cancellation substantially reduces unwanted ambient sound, so you can get focused and stay focused.
- Great for Music and Talking with immersive sound for listening to music and a noise-canceling mic that ensures that your voice is heard on the other end of a call—not the noise around you.
- On ear controls to adjust volume, start/end calls, and invoke Teams. Plus button controls for power, active noise cancellation (ANC), wireless Bluetooth pairing, and mute on/off or use the flip-to-mute mic feature.
- Certified for Microsoft Teams ensures it’s easy to pick-up or answer Teams meetings, calls, messages, and notifications with a single press to the Teams button. Or apply a longer touch to invoke Cortana voice skills.
How to turn on Prevent screen captures
- Open Teams and select Calendar.
- Open the scheduled meeting.
- Select Meeting options.
- Expand Advanced protection.
- Turn on Prevent screen captures.
- Select Apply.
The switch is off unless you explicitly enable it. If you turn it on after the meeting has already started, Microsoft says the change takes effect after everyone leaves and then rejoins. For a sensitive session, enable the option before sending the invitation or before attendees enter.
Only the organizer or a co-organizer can change this meeting-level setting. If the option is missing, confirm that the account has Teams Premium and that you are editing the correct meeting rather than an occurrence for which you lack organizer permissions.
What attendees see on each Teams platform
Support differs by client. Tell invitees which experience to expect, especially when a meeting includes contractors, guests, or people connecting through a virtual desktop.
| Client or environment | Behavior when capture prevention is enabled |
|---|---|
| Teams desktop for Windows | A screenshot shows a black rectangle around the meeting window, including meeting pop-out windows. |
| Teams for iOS and Android | Screen captures and recordings are blocked and the attendee sees a restricted-capture message. The restriction covers the stage, chat, participant list, notes, banners, Copilot panels, and other key views. |
| Teams Rooms on Windows | Supported. |
| Teams desktop for macOS | Unsupported; the participant receives audio-only access. |
| Teams on the web | Unsupported; the participant receives audio-only access. |
| Virtual desktop environments | Unsupported; the participant receives audio-only access. |
| Cloud Video Interop | Unsupported; the participant receives audio-only access. |
| Teams Rooms on Android | Unsupported; the participant receives audio-only access. |
There is also an attendee limit behavior to plan for: in meetings with more than 1,000 attendees, people who join after the first 1,000 are audio-only. That is separate from the client-support rules, so a supported device does not guarantee a video experience after the threshold has been reached.

Why a Windows screenshot can look black
A black rectangle around the Teams meeting window is the expected Windows desktop result when capture prevention is active. It is not necessarily a graphics-driver failure, a blank meeting, or a permissions problem. Pop-out meeting windows are included in the protected area.
On iPhone, iPad, and Android, Teams displays a restricted-capture message instead of returning a usable image or recording. The protection covers more than the shared presentation: chat, participant information, meeting notes, banners, and Copilot panels are included.
Important limits and current event support
It does not stop an external camera
Prevent screen captures is platform-enforced blocking, not universal anti-recording protection. Someone can still use a phone or camera to photograph a monitor, and Teams cannot detect or prevent that physical action.
Unsupported clients are not partially protected
macOS, web, virtual desktop, Cloud Video Interop, and Teams Rooms on Android do not receive the protected visual meeting. They are placed in audio-only mode. If a participant must see video or shared content, arrange a supported Windows, mobile, or Windows Rooms client before the meeting.

Town halls require a separate check
Microsoft’s current guidance says screen-capture prevention no longer supports town halls. Town halls created before December 16, 2025 with the setting enabled run audio-only. Do not assume a meeting policy that worked for a regular meeting will provide the same behavior for a town hall; verify the event type and current Teams documentation before scheduling a sensitive broadcast.

No effectiveness percentage is published
Microsoft does not publish a percentage showing how many attempted captures are stopped. Treat the feature as a technical control for supported clients, not as a quantified guarantee that every leak will be prevented.
Use additional controls for highly sensitive meetings
Capture blocking addresses screenshots and recordings. Other controls address attribution, redistribution, or who can participate. They solve different problems and should be selected deliberately.
| Control | What it helps with | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Prevent screen captures | Blocks built-in screenshots, recordings, and most third-party capture apps on supported clients. | Cannot stop an external camera; unsupported clients become audio-only. |
| Watermarking | Overlays each participant’s email address on shared content and video, helping deter and attribute unauthorized screenshots. | It does not replace capture blocking and does not physically prevent a photo. |
| Copy/forward restrictions | Organizers, templates, sensitivity labels, and admin policies can restrict copying or forwarding of meeting chat, live captions, transcripts, and recap content. | Microsoft explicitly says these restrictions do not prevent screen capture. |
| Highly sensitive meeting configuration | Combines watermarking, end-to-end encryption, lobby and presenter restrictions, in-meeting-only chat, and blocked chat copying. | No combination removes the risk of an external camera or a person deliberately retyping information. |
For a confidential briefing, a practical sequence is to enable Prevent screen captures, add watermarks when attribution matters, restrict lobby and presenter access, and apply copy controls to chat, captions, transcripts, and recaps. Explain to participants that these layers reduce different leakage paths; none is a substitute for a confidentiality policy.
Pre-meeting checklist
- Confirm the organizer or co-organizer has Teams Premium.
- Enable Meeting options → Advanced protection → Prevent screen captures before attendees join.
- Identify anyone using macOS, a browser, a virtual desktop, Cloud Video Interop, or Teams Rooms on Android; those clients will be audio-only.
- Decide whether participant-email watermarks are needed for deterrence and attribution.
- Apply sensitivity labels, templates, or admin policies that restrict copying and forwarding of chat, captions, transcripts, and recaps.
- For meetings larger than 1,000 people, plan for attendees beyond the first 1,000 to be audio-only.
- If the meeting is a town hall, verify current event support instead of relying on a regular-meeting configuration.
- Tell attendees not to use external cameras and include that limitation in the confidentiality briefing.
Troubleshooting capture prevention
The Prevent screen captures switch is missing
Check that you are the organizer or co-organizer, that you opened the meeting from the correct calendar entry, and that the account has Teams Premium. A normal Teams license does not expose this Premium control.

An attendee can see video from an unsupported device
Under the protection policy, unsupported clients should receive audio-only access. Ask the person to leave and join from a supported Windows desktop, iOS or Android device, or Teams Rooms on Windows. If the meeting has more than 1,000 attendees, also check whether the person joined after the first 1,000.
The change did not affect a meeting already in progress
When the option is enabled after the meeting starts, the change takes effect only after everyone leaves and rejoins. End the session, allow the setting to propagate, and have participants re-enter.
A screenshot is black on Windows
That is the expected protected result. Confirm that the black region surrounds the Teams meeting window, including any pop-out, rather than only a separate application. Do not disable the control merely because the screenshot is not a normal image.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSomeone shared a photo taken with a phone
That is outside the feature’s technical boundary. Use watermarks for attribution, tighten attendee and presenter permissions, apply copy restrictions to meeting artifacts, and address the incident through your organization’s security and confidentiality procedures.
Best Value
- Comfortable on-ear design with lightweight, padded earcups for all-day wear.
- Background noise-reducing microphone.
- High-quality stereo speakers optimized for voice.
- Mute control with status light. Easily see, at a glance, whether you can be heard or not.
- Convenient call controls, including mute, volume, and the Teams button, are in-line and easy to reach.
A town hall became audio-only
Check whether the event was created before December 16, 2025 with capture prevention enabled. Microsoft’s current guidance says town halls no longer support this setting, and those older events run audio-only. Reconfigure the event only after confirming the current town-hall behavior for your tenant.

If your related job is creating screenshots of public web pages for meeting briefs, documentation, or review—not defeating Teams’ protection—ScreenshotNeo returns a website image or PDF through one request. It is separate from Teams and cannot capture a protected Teams meeting for you.
For options and authentication details, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-teams -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-teams"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://www.microsoft.com/microsoft-teams' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDFs. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get the 1,000 monthly screenshots without entering a card.
The Bottom Line
Enable Prevent screen captures in Meeting options for Teams Premium meetings, test every client your attendees use, and layer watermarks and copy restrictions for sensitive material. It blocks software capture on supported platforms, but it cannot stop an external camera.
