After hail, wait until the storm has passed, check for damage from a safe place, and keep water out of the home while arranging a professional roof assessment. A tarp or other temporary cover can limit further exposure; it is not a permanent repair. Stay off a wet, unstable, or visibly damaged roof.

What should you do first after hail?

  1. Wait until the severe-weather threat has passed. Do not go onto the roof or enter a visibly damaged building. The National Weather Service advises, “Stay out of damaged buildings.” Keep clear of downed power lines and report them to local authorities or the utility; treat wires as energized. See the National Weather Service post-storm guidance and OSHA roofing safety guidance.
  2. Look from the ground. Check for missing or broken shingles, holes, displaced vents, damaged gutters or skylights, and branches or other debris. Wear sturdy shoes if you need to walk through storm debris.
  3. Check indoors only if it is safe. Look for water in the attic or living space without entering an area that may be structurally or electrically hazardous. A ceiling stain may not sit directly below the roof opening: water can travel along roof surfaces and framing before it appears inside.

Dents on soft-metal vents, patio covers, or screens, and stripped foliage can indicate hail impact, but they do not prove that the roof is leaking. A leak may enter at roof details such as flashing, a chimney, a soffit, or a vent, rather than through a visible puncture. The Florida Division of Emergency Management’s retrofit guide discusses these possible water-entry routes in its broader storm-recovery context.

How can you limit water damage?

If you can see a roof opening or broken covering, arrange temporary waterproof coverage as soon as conditions permit. A roof tarp or professionally applied sheeting can reduce exposure while you organize an inspection and repair. Inside, place buckets under drips, move furnishings and belongings, and cover items that cannot be moved. Remove loose debris only when doing so is safe.

Roof access is hazardous after a storm. OSHA identifies falls, slippery or deteriorating surfaces, power lines, and material handling as risks in roof inspection and tarping. Louisiana’s Department of Insurance puts it plainly: “Don’t get on your roof until it is safe.” Hire qualified help for roof access if the surface is wet, steep, unstable, damaged, or beyond your experience. A tarp must be secured to shed water away from the opening, but the right method depends on the roof, damage, wind, and access. Do not walk on a tarp or assume that having one makes a DIY installation safe.

Temporary protection and permanent repair serve different purposes:

Option Purpose What to expect
Temporary tarp or sheeting Limit further weather exposure while the damage is assessed. Requires safe access and suitable placement for the roof and damage. It does not establish the full scope of damage or restore the roof; no universal effective duration is established.
Permanent repair or replacement Restore the roof covering and address the damage. Requires professional assessment and coordination with your insurer and local requirements. The work depends on the damage and roof system.

The Florida guide discusses roofing felt as a possible fallback when tarps are unavailable, but notes that felt is intended beneath the primary roof covering and is not effective long term when exposed to sun and wind. Do not treat exposed felt as durable roof protection.

How should you document the damage and contact your insurer?

  1. Photograph what you can safely see. Take clear pictures of visible roof damage from the ground, interior water, and affected belongings. Make notes about when you noticed the damage. Do not climb onto the roof to get a better picture.
  2. Contact your insurer promptly. Share your observations and ask when an adjuster can inspect the property and what documentation or temporary mitigation the insurer requires.
  3. Keep receipts and records. Save receipts for reasonable emergency mitigation and retain relevant photos and communications. Ask the insurer what it needs, and check before discarding damaged materials.
  4. Coordinate permanent work with the inspection. North Carolina’s insurance department advises homeowners to wait until the insurer has had an opportunity to inspect and repair costs have been agreed before making permanent repairs. That is state consumer guidance, not a universal policy term; follow your policy and local rules.

Coverage and reimbursement depend on the policy and jurisdiction. Do not assume every hail loss is covered or that a particular temporary repair will be reimbursed. The Louisiana Department of Insurance’s after-the-storm guidance, Mississippi Insurance Department’s storm-damage guidance, and North Carolina Department of Insurance’s wind and hail claim guidance describe steps for their respective states.

How do you arrange inspection and permanent repairs?

Choose a roofer with appropriate local licensing where required, insurance, references, and a complaint history you can check. Ask for a written assessment and repair scope. Avoid repeated roof traffic: Mississippi’s insurance department advises limiting access to the adjuster and the roofer you select because foot traffic can add damage. Confirm the completed work to your satisfaction before final payment.

A tarp can reduce exposure temporarily, but it does not determine whether shingles, flashing, vents, decking, or other components need repair. Have a professional assess the roof, particularly if coverings are missing, a vent is damaged, there is a visible opening, or water has entered the home.

What can reduce hail damage risk during a future roof replacement?

When replacing a roof, ask whether impact-rated shingles suit your home, roof design, and local requirements. FEMA’s February 2023 windstorm resilience fact sheet says homeowners in relevant settings may consider asphalt shingles with a Class 4 impact rating under UL 2218 or ANSI/FM 4473. A rating is a product-selection consideration, not a guarantee against damage or a temporary leak solution. Compare the tested impact class and standard, compatibility, warranty terms, and the contractor’s credentials; FEMA does not identify one product as best for every home. See FEMA’s windstorm resilience fact sheet.
