To reduce gaps when switching videos on a 24/7 YouTube stream, keep the encoder’s connection to YouTube running and switch files in the playout software or system feeding that encoder. Don’t stop and restart the outgoing stream for each video. The important distinction is between changing the content being played and interrupting the encoder’s output.
Why gaps happen when you switch videos
Your encoder sends video to YouTube through an ingest URL and stream key. If switching files causes the encoder to stop sending, reconnect, or restart its output, viewers may see a gap while the connection is re-established. Keeping the output connected while changing the upstream media source is the practical way to reduce that risk.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a continuous stream from the broadcast objects associated with it. Its documentation describes a 24/7 broadcast that continues while another broadcast is made live and later completed. Google’s example says, “However, you don’t stop streaming video since the 24/7 broadcast continues.” That API example concerns broadcast management; it is not a recipe for seamless transitions between video files.
Keep the stream connected while changing the source
- Set up the YouTube ingest once. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, use the stream URL and stream key shown for your stream. Enter them in your encoder or playout system, following that product’s instructions.
- Start the encoder output and confirm YouTube receives it. Begin sending to YouTube before relying on unattended playback. Check the preview or stream status in Live Control Room.
- Switch files in the playout layer. Queue or select the next video in the software or system feeding the encoder. Keep the outgoing encoder session connected during the change; avoid stopping and restarting the YouTube output for every file.
- Check the transition and the next file. Confirm the new file plays and that the encoder output remains active. Test the complete path—from the playlist or media source through the encoder to YouTube—before leaving it unattended.
The exact control for switching sources depends on the playout software or device. YouTube’s documentation explains encoder ingest, but does not prescribe a particular playlist-transition setting or guarantee gap-free file changes. Verify the behavior of your own playout system.

Match the encoder settings to YouTube’s guidance
Correct stream settings help maintain a compatible ingest, but they cannot guarantee that a local source change will be seamless. YouTube’s recommendations include the following values:
| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Rate control for RTMP/RTMPS | Use constant bitrate (CBR). |
| Keyframe frequency | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| H.264 at 1080p60 | Recommended video bitrate: 17 Mbps. |
| H.264 at 1080p30 | Recommended video bitrate: 10 Mbps. |
These are YouTube’s operational encoder recommendations, not measured results or a promise that a transition will have no interruption. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the full requirements, including resolution, frame rate, audio, and any changes to recommended values.

Choose an ingest protocol for your workflow
RTMP or RTMPS
YouTube describes RTMPS as “a regular RTMP (RealTime Messaging Protocol) video stream tunneled through an SSL connection.” Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it and you want encrypted ingest. YouTube describes RTMP and RTMPS as suitable for ordinary low-latency live workflows. Switching between RTMP and RTMPS does not, by itself, prevent a gap caused by the playout system stopping output.
HLS
HLS is a segment-based alternative for supported workflows and generally has higher latency than RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube’s HLS guidance calls for MPEG-TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. HLS requires protocol-specific configuration; changing to it alone does not make source transitions gap-free. See YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements and protocol and encoder guidance.

Choose a playout approach
Software playout with an encoder, a dedicated hardware encoder, and a managed cloud studio can all be considered for scheduled or continuous prerecorded playback. Compare them on whether they can queue and switch files without interrupting encoder output, how they recover from errors, what monitoring they provide, and how much control they offer over codec, bitrate, and latency. YouTube’s encoder directory lists AJA HELO Plus and Upstream among relevant options, but that listing does not establish that either guarantees seamless file transitions. Confirm transition behavior and failure handling with the provider before depending on a system unattended.

Troubleshoot transitions and interruptions
- The YouTube stream ends whenever a file changes: The playout process may be stopping or restarting the encoder output. Keep the output session running and switch the media source upstream; check the playout system’s instructions for its queue or transition controls.
- The next video does not appear: Check that the new file is available to the playout system, that it is selected or queued correctly, and that the encoder is still sending to the configured YouTube stream.
- YouTube reports an ingest or encoder problem: Compare the encoder’s protocol, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, video format, and audio settings with YouTube’s current guidance. A mismatch can affect ingest, though correcting it cannot guarantee a gap-free file switch.
- The stream remains connected but viewers see a pause: The file handoff may be producing a brief period without usable video or audio even though the encoder stays connected. Test the transition through the full playout chain and investigate the source-switch behavior in the software or device documentation.
- You are considering HLS to solve the gap: First confirm that your workflow supports YouTube’s HLS configuration and segment requirements. HLS has different latency and playlist constraints; it is not a general fix for interruptions at the source.
