Remove extra entries from the playlist itself; use loop and shuffle controls only to choose what happens when playback reaches the end or changes order. The right fix depends on whether the playlist is on YouTube, in OBS/VLC, or in an embedded player.
Find out why a video is repeating
A duplicate entry and a repeated playback mode are different problems. Open the playlist or source list and check whether the same video or file appears more than once. If it appears only once, inspect the player’s repeat setting: it may be repeating the current video or restarting the entire playlist.
- Repeated entry: The same video or file is present multiple times in the playlist. Remove the unwanted entry.
- Playback repeat: A player setting repeats one video or the full playlist. Change that setting to match your intended playback.
- Shuffle: The player changes the order. Shuffle does not remove repeated entries, so a duplicated item can still appear in the shuffled sequence.
Fix repeats in a YouTube playlist
Check whether YouTube is repeating one video or the full playlist
YouTube has separate controls for looping a playlist and repeating only the current video. On desktop, use the Loop control in the playlist control box to repeat the playlist. On Android, tapping Loop a second time enables repeat of the current video; a “1” indicates that mode. On TVs and game consoles, check whether the control says “Repeat • Playlist” or “Repeat • Currently playing.” See YouTube Help’s loop instructions for the applicable device steps.
If the current video is set to repeat, turn that mode off or change it to playlist repeat. If you want a nonstop sequence, playlist repeat is the appropriate mode; if you do not want a video to return, check both the playback mode and the playlist contents.

Remove repeated entries
If the same video appears more than once in the playlist, remove the unwanted entry from the playlist itself. The YouTube Help instructions cited above explain playback repetition, not current YouTube Studio steps for deleting duplicate entries, so check the labels in your current playlist or Studio interface rather than relying on an outdated click-by-click path.
Fix repeats in an OBS playlist stream
Inspect the VLC Video Source list
OBS’s VLC Video Source uses VLC libraries for extended media support and requires VLC to be installed. Open the source’s properties and inspect its playlist for repeated files or URLs. Remove any entry you do not want to play. OBS describes the source and its controls in its Media Sources documentation.

Set loop and shuffle for the intended behavior
- Loop Playlist: Restarts the source after it reaches the end of its media list. OBS documents this as on by default.
- Shuffle Playlist: Randomizes the file order. OBS documents this as off by default.
Turning Loop Playlist off prevents the list from restarting after its last item; it does not remove a duplicate that occurs earlier in the list. Turning Shuffle Playlist on changes order, not list contents. For a nonstop stream that should keep playing, retain playlist looping and remove duplicate entries from the source list.
Fix repeats in a custom embedded player
The YouTube IFrame Player API provides setLoop and setShuffle for playlist playback. Looping returns playback to the beginning after the final video. Shuffling changes playlist order; if playback has started, the current video continues while the list is reordered, and shuffling an already shuffled list shuffles it again. These controls affect playback and order, not duplicate detection. Inspect the playlist passed to the player and remove repeated video IDs there. See the YouTube IFrame Player API Reference.

Choose the right fix for nonstop playback

Troubleshoot when the same video still returns
- It returns immediately after finishing: Check whether the player is repeating the currently playing video rather than the whole playlist.
- It returns after the final playlist item: Whole-playlist looping is likely active. That is expected for nonstop playback; disable it only if you want playback to stop at the end.
- It appears at different points in a changing order: Shuffle may be enabled, but it does not remove duplicates. Inspect the underlying playlist or source list.
- You removed one entry but still see the video: Inspect the full list for another entry referring to the same video or file, then check whether the player is also repeating it.
- OBS stops instead of continuing: Check that Loop Playlist is enabled if you want playback to restart after the list ends, and verify that the list contains playable media.
